
A Kerala court today found the accussed Ameerul Islam guilty for the murder and rape of 20-year-old Jisha in April last year.
The dalit law student who hailed from Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district in Kerela was found murdered at her home in Kuruppampadi on April 28th, 2016.
The murder of Jisha had led to large scale protests in Kerala. The police arrested Ameerul Islam after several days, another accussed Sabu who was the initial suspect had hanged himself in July.
The court is yet to announce the quantum of sentence. Jisha's mother told the media she wanted the "death penalty" for the accussed.
The Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court found Ameerul guilty of violations under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.
The court said that the charges under Sections 449 (trespass), 342 (wrongful confinement), 376 (rape) and 302 (murder) had been proved.
