India successfully test-fired its nuclear-capable short-range ballistic missiles Prithvi-II and Agni-I from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha, on Thursday.
The tests, which give a boost to the country’s nuclear and air defence capabilities, were conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command, which handles India’s nuclear weapons arsenal.
Both missiles met all mission objectives and validated key operational and technical parameters, officials said.
The Ministry of Defence said, “Short-range ballistic missiles—Prithvi-II and Agni-I—were successfully test-fired from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha on July 17.”
“The launches validated all operational and technical parameters. These tests were conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command,” it added.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Indian Army, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and the defence industry for the successful tests. “Remarkable achievement,” he said.

The Prithvi-II missile has a range of around 350 kilometres and can carry a payload of up to 500 kilogrammes. It is capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear warheads.
The Agni-I missile has a higher range and can carry a payload of up to 1,000 kilogrammes to 700 to 900 kilometres. Both Prithvi-II and Agni-I missiles are key components of India’s nuclear deterrence arsenal.
A day earlier, on Wednesday, India also successfully test-fired the Akash Prime missile in Ladakh. The upgraded surface-to-air missile, developed for the Indian Army, has been customised for high-altitude operations and was tested at an elevation above 4,500 metres.
“India on July 16 achieved a significant milestone by successfully destroying two aerial high-speed unmanned targets at high altitude in Ladakh by Akash Prime, the upgraded variant of the Akash weapon system for the Indian Army,” the ministry said in another statement.
The successful test-firing of these missiles comes over two months after the military conflict between India and Pakistan from May 7 to 10.
The Akash Prime system features the latest upgrades, including an indigenously developed radio frequency seeker. The defence ministry said the weapon system’s design is based on operational feedback from users, with improvements made to enhance its effectiveness.
“Based on the operational feedback from users, various upgrades are made to improve the operational effectiveness, demonstrating the advantage of the ecosystem created for the indigenous weapon system,” it said.
The test-firing of Akash Prime in Ladakh, close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC), follows the outstanding performance of India’s air defence systems during Operation Sindoor.
