Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Monday welcomed the central government's decision to revoke Article 370 of the Constitution in Jammu and Kashmir.

Thackeray said that Shiv Sena has been long fighting for the removal of Article 370 and it fulfils the dream of late Bal Thackeray.

"Shiv Sena has been long fighting for this. If Balasaheb had been alive today, he would have been very happy... His dream has come true with this," Thackeray said.

The Shiv Sena chief further said that the country has secured 'full independence' with the scrapping of Article 370.

While Independence Day (August 15) is coming, with the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir, the country has secured "full independence", he added.

He also urged the opposition parties to set aside all the differences and support the government's decision in the interest of the nation.

Shiv Sena has an alliance with the BJP in Maharashtra and at the Centre.

Earlier in the day, the government revoked Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Shortly after Home Minister Amit Shah tabled a resolution to this effect in Rajya Sabha, President Ram Nath Kovind came out with a notification - The Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Order, 2019 that will come into force immediately.

The order will supersede the Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Order, 1954 as amended from time to time.

Shah also moved the Jammu and Kashmir (Reorganisation) Bill in the Upper House, that converted the state into a Union Territory with the legislature, and hived off Ladakh region into another Union Territory without legislature.
