What is Chandrayaan-4?

Chandrayaan-4 aims to develop and demonstrate technologies for returning to Earth after a successful landing on the Moon.

The mission will consist of two spacecraft stacks featuring five modules. Stack 1 will focus on lunar sample collection, whereas Stack 2 will handle propulsion, transfer, and re-entry of samples back to Earth.

It will further involve complex docking and undocking operations in lunar orbit, marking a significant advancement in India's space capabilities.

The mission would enable India to be self-sufficient in critical foundational technologies for manned missions, lunar sample return, and scientific analysis of thesamples.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has designated USD 251.35 million (Rs 2104 crores) for the same.

The cabinet has set a timeline of 36 months for the mission to be completed. They added that the mission will feature five modules, divided into two stacks.
