Independence Day 2024: The Union Home Ministry has announced the names of the recipients of the prestigious gallantry and service medals duringthis year's Independence Day celebrations. Gallantry Medals (GM): Awarded for acts of bravery.
President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM): Given For exceptional service.
Police Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM): Recognises dedicated service.
Among the 1,037 awardees is Head Constable Chaduvu Yadaiah of the Telangana Police, who has been conferred the President's Medal for Gallantry. Yadaiah's valour during a robbery on July 25, 2022, is what made himstandout.
Despite being repeatedly stabbed by the assailants, Yadaiah successfully apprehended two suspects involved in chain-snatching and arms dealing. He was hospitalised for 17 days. His brave actions led to the arrest of Ishan Niranjan Neelamnalli and Rahul.
This year, 213 medals for gallantry are being awarded, with 208 going to police personnel from various states and central forces. Jammu and Kashmirpolice have received the highest number of awards, totalling 31. Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra follow with 17 awards each.
Police Sub-Inspector Dhanaji Honmane from Maharashtra, who was martyred in a confrontation with Naxalites in Gadchiroli district in 2020, will also receive a gallantry medal. Honmane is among the 17 police personnel from Maharashtra selected for this honour.
Other notable recipients include officers from Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Punjab, Telangana, and several Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), such as the CRPF, SSB, CISF and BSF.
