Delhi and adjoining regions continue to be drenched with heavy rainfall. After a sudden burst of heavy showers in Delhi on Tuesday afternoon, the clouds opened up once again on Wednesday morning. A heavy cloud cover in the sky gave way to heavy rains in the National Capital Region as people started leaving for work.
The national capital and nearby areas have been witnessing unprecedented rains for weeks. Delhiites are not likely to get any respite any time soon as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the next 72 hours. People have been asked to remain alert and cautious while on the roads.
Delhi has witnessed an unusual amount of rainfall this monsoon season, recording over 50 per cent of average rainfall. The condition is likely to continue till Friday with some respite coming over the weekend.
Residents have been asked to be careful of waterlogged areas and watch out for electric poles and fallen trees.
According to the weather department, Delhi has recorded 913.1 mm of rain this season, as compared to the usual 586.9 mm, 56 per cent above normal.
On Tuesday, several parts of Delhi were hit by heavy rains with the maximum temperature reaching 35.4 degrees Celsius, 1.9 degrees higher than normal, as per the weather department. The relative humidity was between 100 per cent and 85 per cent.
The weather department has predicted rains in the northern and central parts of the country for the next four days till Friday.
