Delhi High Court chides Arvind Kejriwal, says he puts personal interest over national interest

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal

Delhi High Court on Friday (Apr 26) chided the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for failing to provide textbooks to over 200,000 students in public schools.

The Court stated that Arvind Kejriwal has put personal interest above anything and his government is only focused on holding on topower as he is not resigning from the post of chief minister despite being in prison in the money laundering case connected to the liquor policy scam.

The remarks were made by a Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora when they were dealing with a Public Interest Litigation (PIL). The PIL raised the issue of the poor condition of MCD schools.

During the hearing, the Court said that the Delhi government was "interested in the appropriation of power" and this particularcase has highlighted what exactly was "wrong".

The Court said that it would pass an order on the matter on Monday.

"I am sorry to say you have placed your interest above the interest of the students, the children that are studying. That is very clear and we are going to give that finding that you have placed your political interest at a higher pedestal…It is very unfortunate that you have done this. It is wrong and that is what has got highlighted in this matter," the Court said.

"I don’t know how much power you want. The problem is because you are trying to appropriate power, which is why you are not getting power," it added.

Arvind Kejriwal's arrest

Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a case pertaining to alleged corruption and money laundering in formulating and executing the Delhi government's excise policy.

The Delhi government had implemented the policy on November 17, 2021. But it was scrapped at the end of September 2022. Corruption allegations have been levelled against the party, which AAP denies.
