The Congress party has staked its claim to form the next government in Meghalaya. Senior party leaders met Meghalaya Governor Ganga Prasad last night to stake claim.
Senior Congress leaders are meeting newly elected MLAs (Members of Legislative Assembly) in the state to discuss their strategy.
In its letter to the Governor, the Congress said that it was the single largest party in the state and should be invited to form government at the earliest.
"Congress has become the single largest party in the state and constitutional propriety dictates that the Congress be invited to form the government at the earliest. Majority would be proven on the floor House at the date and time decided by you (Governor)."
Senior Congress leaders Ahmed Patel and Kamal Nath on Saturday met Governor Ganga Prasad requesting him to invite the Congress to form the new government in Meghalaya.
Kamal Nath said they had handed the governor a letter to request him to invite the Congress to form the government in the state. He also said that the Congress was in touch with other political parties to form the government.
