Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala and BJP MP Hema Malini row: Here's what happened

Hema Malini

Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala has been under scrutiny for his alleged 'derogatory' remarks on BJP MP from Mathura Hema Malini. The row started when BJP IT department head Amit Malviya shared a video on social media platform X on April 3, in which Surjewala is seen addressing a rally.

He wrote, "Congress MP Randeep Surjewala makes a vile sexist comment, that is demeaning and derogatory, not just for Hema Malini, who is an accomplished individual, but women in general."

"He (Surjewala) asks, "MLA/MP kyun banate hain? Taaki vo humari awaaz utha sake, humare baat manvaye, isliye banate honge. Koi Hema Malini toh nahi, jo chatne ke liye banate hai?” (Why make MLA/MP? So that they can raise our voice, get our views accepted, that is why they must be making MPs. It is no Hema Malini, who’s made to lick?)," the caption read.

The BJP leader added, "Who thinks of women as something to lick? That is the most disgusting description someone can come up with. Just the other day, Surjewala’s colleague was asking ‘rate’ of another BJP woman leader, and now this. This is Rahul Gandhi’s Congress. It is misogynistic and abhors women."

However, Surjewala today (April 4) posted a 28-second clip from the same event and claimed that BJP's IT Cell has developed a habit of "editing, distorting and spreading fake news."

"We respect Hema Malini ji because she is married to Dharmendra ji, she is our bahu," Surjewala is heard saying in the video.

BJP MP Hema Malini responded to Surjewala's comments by saying, "They target only popular people because targeting the unpopular ones won't do them any good... They should learn how to respect women from PM Narendra Modi."

Expressing her happiness over her nomination from Mathura, Malini said, "I am very happy to get the opportunity to serve the people of Mathura for the third time. I will finish the work that could not be done in my two terms."

The video shared by the BJP leader Amit Malviya has come to the notice of the National Commission for Women who have condemned the "offensive remarks" made by Surjewala.

"National Commission for Women strongly denounces the deeply offensive remarks made by Mr. Randeep Surjewala. The remarks are extremely misogynistic and outrageous to the modesty of a woman. Hon’ble Chairperson @sharmarekha has formally written to the Chief Election Commissioner, urging immediate action against Mr. Soorjewala and requesting an Action Taken Report within 3 days," NCW wrote on social media platform X.

Haryana Women Commission also sent notice to Surjewala over his ‘indecent remarks’ against Hema Malini. The commission has summoned Surjewala on April 9.

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath also criticised the Congress MP and said, "When the opposition is not able to find any candidate against Hema Malini ji, it is now using derogatory language against her."
