Captain Anshuman Singh's parents say their son's widow doesn't live with them, want next of kin rule to change

Captain Anshuman Singh was awarded the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, posthumously recently. His wife Smriti Singh, along with his mother, received the medal from President Droupadi Murmu. Financial assistance following a soldier's death is given to the next of kin. In this case, his wife Smriti. However, now his parents are raising issues with the programme, saying that their daughter-in-law doesn't live with them anymore.
His father, Ravi Pratap Singh and mother Manju Singh told news channel TV9 Bharatvarsh that they want the Indian Army’s next of kin (NOK) criteria to be changed. Captain Anshuman Singh died in July last year during an effort to save his fellow army men from a fire at Siachen.
They said that Smriti is getting the entitlements after their son's death and they have asked Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to change the NOK criteria so that other families like them don't suffer.
“The criteria set to NOK is not correct. I have also spoken to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh about this," they told the news channel.
"Anshuman’s wife doesn’t live with us now, the marriage was just five months old and there is no child. We only have a photo of our son hanging on the wall with a garland on it,” Ravi Pratap Singh added.

If a soldier is unmarried, the parents or guardians are registered as next of kin. After marriage, the spouse becomes the NOK and the financial assistance in the event of his death goes to the spouse.

Meanwhile, a man made derogatory comments about Smriti Singh on social media and people are angry. The National Commission for Women has demanded action against a man named Ahmad K who made a sleazy comment on Smriti's photo showing her receiving the Kirti Chakra at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Captain Anshuman Singh
Captain Anshuman served in the 26 Punjab Regiment as a medical officer and was stationed in Siachen during Operation Meghdoot. On July 19, 2023, he tried to douse a fire caused by a short circuit in an Indian Army ammunition dump. He saw a fibreglass hut on fire and moved to save those inside. He successfully rescued four to five people but died while trying to save some equipment in the medical examination room.
