BSP matriarch Mayawati removes nephew Akash as party successor

Five months after Bahujan Samaj Party chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati anointed nephew Akash Anand as both party national coordinator and "successor", the 28-year-old was removed from both the designations.
In a post in Hindi on X, on Tuesday evening, Mayawati said, "BSP is also a movement for self-respect and self-esteem of Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar and social change for which Shri Kanshi Ram ji and I have dedicated our entire lives and a new generation is also being prepared to give it momentum."
"In the same sequence, along with promoting other people in the party, I declared Shri Akash Anand as the National Coordinator and successor, but in the larger interest of the party and the movement, he is being separated from both these important responsibilities until he attains full maturity," read her second post.

His father, Anand Kumar, will continue to fulfil his responsibilities in the party, she added in a third post.

Akash Anand's role in Bahujan Samaj Party in recent past
In one of his first poll rallies in India's ongoing election summer, Akash Anand targeted the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party at length, in a departure from his aunt and the BSP matriarch Mayawati's political approach in recent years.
Akash was introduced to the BSP in September 2017, shortly after he returned to India after completing his MBA in London.
By 2019, he was playing an active role in the party and was reported to have brought Mayawati to join social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
A few weeks after the 2019 results, in which the BSP won the most number of seats (10) in Uttar Pradesh among Opposition parties, Mayawati appointed Akash the party’s national coordinator.
In December 2022, after the debacle of the UP Assembly polls, in which the BSP won just one seat, Mayawati sent Akash to different parts of Uttar Pradesh to collect "truthful progress reports of work done by the party".
Akash's role then expanded to overseeing the BSP’s preparations for the Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Chhattisgarh Assembly elections last year.
Mayawati’s action against Akash comes after a speech for which he was booked for "promoting enmity" following which several rallies to be addressed by him were cancelled.
