Emails that were sent to several schools in the Indian city of Ahmedabadthreatening bomb blasts have been traced to Pakistan, the news agency PTI reported on Friday (May 10) citing the police. On May 6, which was the eve of the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections in the country, emails havinghoax bomb threats were sent to36 schools in Ahmedabad.

The schools that received these emailsfrom the Russian domain 'mail.ru' were designated as polling booths. The police jumped into action (on receiving the emails) and started an investigation. They, however, didnot find any suspector explosiveat any of the schools.

'Emails sent to spread fear'

"The emails were sent from the 'mail.ru' domain, in which a man impersonating himself as Tauheed Liaquat sent them to all the schools to spread fear among voters and Indian citizens," the Ahmedabad crime branch said on Friday.

According toJoint Commissioner of Police Sharad Singhal, Liaquatalso assumed another identity as Hamad Javed. Singhal said that theperson with these names was operating from Pakistan's Faisalabad district.

The same person has created various identities on different social media platforms, one of them being that of Hamad Javed, the top police official said and pointed out that these social media platforms were used to spread anti-India messages, rumours, and fear among Indians.

"It is possible that the name was created to spread fear and rumour. But one thing is certain the emails were sent using the mail.ru domain and the location was traced to the Faisalabad cantonment area in Pakistan," Singhal added.

Liaqaut's namehadalso been revealed during a honeytrap investigation by another agency, he said.

Further probe underway

Singhal also said that further investigation into the case was underway, adding, that agencies like the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS), National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) were contacted.

This incident in Ahmedabad came days after similar emails (of bomb threats)were sent to schools in New Delhi.
