Karnataka police arrested Syed Abubakar over alleged Instagram links with Pakistani gangsters and suspicious social media activity, officials said
A 25-year-old man was arrested in Karnataka on charges of allegedly committing a terrorist act after police suspected him of having links with Pakistani gangsters through social media platforms. The accused was identified as Syed Abubakar, a resident of Islampur who worked as an AC mechanic, police said. According to police, Abubakar was allegedly in contact through Instagram with an international anti-social and radicalised individual. His arrest followed a tip-off received by a police constable attached to Doddaballapur Town police station.
The FIR said that at around 10:30 am on August 20, police officials received information from an informer alleging that Abubakar was involved in suspicious dealings with people in Pakistan. Acting on the information, the constable reached Islampur Circle at around 11am and found Abubakar there. He was questioned but allegedly failed to provide satisfactory answers and attempted to leave the spot.
Police subsequently examined his mobile phone on suspicion. According to the FIR, Abubakar was using an Instagram account under the name ‘sayedabudakar 313’ and had liked reels related to Pakistan-based gangsters posted by an Instagram user named ‘Hammadmemon 333’. The FIR further alleged that Abubakar had uploaded videos featuring gangsters as Instagram status updates and had shared his identity card with the account ‘Hammadmemon 333’.
Several photographs of pistols were also allegedly found on his mobile phone, which the FIR said indicated his interest in firearms. The complainant alleged that Abubakar could potentially attempt to influence or instigate youths against India in the future and engage in activities detrimental to the sovereignty of the country.
Based on the complaint, Doddaballapur Town Police registered a case under Sections 113(3), relating to a terrorist act, and 197(2), concerning imputations or assertions prejudicial to national integration, of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police arrested Abubakar in connection with the case, while further investigation is underway. Authorities are also attempting to identify and trace the alleged radicalised individual with whom Abubakar was reportedly communicating through Instagram, police said.
