Euro 2024: Roberto Baggio, former Italian football star, robbed during Spain vs Italy match

Former Italy football player Roberto Baggio, in an unfortunate incident, was robbed at his home recently. The incident happened on Thursday (June 20) in country's northern city of Vicenza, said the local police as reported by the sports news outlet ESPN.

Baggio was enjoying the national team's game against Spain in the ongoing Euro 2024 when the incident took place. According to various local media reports, at least five robbers entered the house of former star footballer at about 10 p.m. local time.

The former Italy star confronted them and was hit on headby the butt of a gun by one of the robbers, report ESPN citing Italian media reports.

The 57-year-old was then locked in a room along with his family as the robbers looted the house. They took jewelry, watches and cash after injuring Baggio.

The footballer, after the robbers left, managed to break the door down and called the police. He was later taken to a local hospital for his injuries where he received stitches for the wound inflicted upon him by the robbers. Rest of his family members, however, were not harmed during the robbery.

The footballer gave a statement to Italian news agency ANSA about the incident and said: "Anything can happen under such circumstances. Fortunately, the violence only resulted in some stitches, bruises and a lot of fear. Now we have to get over the fear."

Baggio played 56 international games for Italy, scoring 27 goals. He also played in Italy's premier football competition Serie A for AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus - three of the biggest clubs of the domestic football competition in the country.

As for the match against Spain, defending champion Italy lost the game 1-0 and will now face Croatia on June 25.
