Alvaro Morata

Spain national football team captain Alvaro Morata has said that he might be playing his 'last tournament' for the country at the ongoing Euro 2024. Spain are due to face 2022 FIFA World Cup runners up France in the semifinal on Tuesday (Jul 9).

"It could be [my last tournament with Spain]," Morata said in a conversation with newspaper El Mundo on Monday (Jul 8). "It's a possibility that I don't want to talk about too much, but it's probable."

The reason cited by Morata is his constant mistreatment by Spanish fans. The footballer has been on the receiving end of criticism ever since joining LaLiga club Atletico Madrid in 2019. He was whistled at by home fans in 2020 Euros as well as during an international friendly against Brazil in March this year.

"In Spain it's hard for me to be happy," Morata said. "Without doubt [I'm happier outside of Spain]. I've said it many times. Above all, because people respect me. In Spain there's no respect for anything or anyone."

The 31-year-old has so far started in four of Spain's five matches in the tournament. He was earlier wrongly reported to have received a yellow card in Spain's 2-1 victory over Germany in the quarterfinals. A yellow card would have resulted in his suspension from the France tie.

Morata was also seen crying on the sidelines after the win against Germany, which he explained why.

"I try to enjoy this tournament, which could be my last games with the national team, and in the future, what will be, will be," he said. "Maybe one day they'll even miss me. Each day, the moment for leaving is closer, that's why I enjoy it, that's why I cry, that's why I'll cry at whatever comes next, for good or bad," he added.
