German referee Felix Zwayer will take charge of the England-Netherlands Euro 2024 semifinal on Wednesday (Jul10) with him in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. With the Euro 2024 now in the final week, UEFA (European football’s governing body) on Monday (Jul8) announced the appointment of controversial referee Zwayer as the match official having faced match-fixing charges in the past. The German referee’s appointment has been slammed by the English fans but there has been no official complaint from the Football Association.
The high-voltage clash between England and Netherlands which takes place on Wednesday will see the German in charge who comes from a controversial background. Zwayer was investigated with then-referee Robert Hoyzer’s fix of a game between Wuppertal and Werder Bremen B in 2004, although a DFB investigation discovered he had accepted a payment of €300 (324.57 USD) from Hoyzer. While Hoyzer was banned for life, Zwayer was not found guilty after an investigation but served a six-month suspension from football activity.
The referee was later in the spotlight when England’s Jude Bellingham described him as “a referee that has match-fixed before” in a high-profile run-in in 2021. The statement came in the build-up to the Bundesliga contest between Dortmund and arch-rivals Bayern Munich when the English player was part of the former.

Despite the match-fixing allegations, both FIFA and UEFA have retained complete faith in Zwayer who has been part of the elite panel of the former since 2012.
Both teams will come into the semifinal contest with unbeaten records in the Euro 2024 so far, England got the better of Switzerland in the quarterfinal on penalties while Netherlands needed a second-half comeback to get past Turkey. England will be hoping to have captain Harry Kane fit for the match having been substituted in the extra time while Marc Guéhi will also return to the team having missed the Switzerland clash through suspension.
