Darwin Nunez heading for Liverpool exit? Uruguayan striker deletes all club-related media on Instagram

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez

Darwin Nunez has left fans perplexed after he deleted all Liverpool-related content on his Instagram account, following an impressive victory by the Reds over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday (May 5).

Liverpool returned to winning ways in the Premier League, having gone on a hara-kiri spree in recent weeks that saw them lose ground in the title race. However, the team, freshened up after a relatively long break, played Spurs out of the park and managed to grab a 4-2 win in front of a packed Anfield crowd.

The only blemish remained Nunez's after-match deleting spree on Instagram where all photos and videos related to the club no longer appear. The only reference to the club remains on his profile bio, in which Nunez has tagged both Liverpool FC and the Uruguay national team. His display picture still has him in a Liverpool kit.

Criticism gets to Nunez?

Fans have speculated that the heavy criticism levelled by certain sections of the online fanbase against Nunez had finally got to him.

"Online abuse or direct criticism is not acceptable, no matter what," said one user, while another commented:"Back your players, even on a rough patch. Even on a human level, we all struggle mentally and need support. You’ll Never Walk Alone, Darwin Nunez."

The forward is coming to the end of his second year on the Merseyside and despite18 goals and 13 assists in 53 games, the no. 9 is yet to completely win over the fans.

While the Uruguayan has shown marked improvement from his first season on the Merseyside, his consistency has still left a lot to be desired. Nunez leads the chart in the most number of big chances missed in the league, which also shows that he is a chance magnet -continuously generating scoring opportunities for himself and the team.

The lack of teeth shown by the Liverpool forward line in the month of April was perhaps the reason why the team went from challenging for a quadruple to only settling for the Carabao Cup in manager Jurgen Klopp's final season.

The speculations around Nunez's future at Liverpool comes a week after Klopp and Mohamed Salah had a very public touchline spat during the match against West Ham United at the London Stadium. Though things looked shaky at the time, Klopp later confirmed that all had been settled between the duo.
