In an attempt to break the stigma around gynaecological cancers, WION spoke to a medical expert and here's what she shared!

Piu Chatterjee, Clinical Nutritionist at CARER, said, "Gynaecological cancers affect female reproductive parts like ovaries, uterus, and more. Despite its prevalence, most people don't talk much about it due to embarrassment and fear. Gynaecological cancers typically showcase symptoms such as abnormal vaginal discharge, itching, clots with urine and stools, swelling, unusual bleeding, etc."

The expert added, "Addressing the stigma around gynaecological cancer is crucial for early detection and effective treatment. We need to dispel misconceptions and normalise discussions about reproductive health to empower women to recognise symptoms without shame. By fostering open conversations, we pave the way for timely intervention and improved outcomes in the fight against gynaecological cancer."

So the big question is, how can we break the stigma around it? According to the expert, we can do so by promoting awareness and education.

She said, "Education stands as a key catalyst in addressing myths and driving change. We need to equip women with accurate insights and empower them to identify symptoms and seek help in time. Within our society, we need to create safe spaces for women to talk about their experiences and learn more about their reproductive health.

"The more we talk about it, the more awareness we can create. In addition to this, organising workshops in schools and healthcare centres on reproductive health can&nbsp;go a long way in building awareness about gynaecological cancers and other associated symptoms."

Lastly, the medical expert said that we need to build&nbsp;a supportive environment for the cancer patient and foster empathy.

"A supportive environment is pivotal in fostering open dialogue and assisting individuals with gynaecological cancers. Support groups and online counselling services offer psychological aid to women grappling with gynaecological cancers.

"These resources not only address emotional needs but also extend support in nutritional guidance for both patients and their families. This facilitates access to valuable information, enabling informed dietary choices that contribute to better recovery."

Defying the fashion world's narrow stereotype of beauty, Brazilian plus-size designer Amanda Momente poses confidently for the camera, wearing the clothing label she founded after failing to find other options that fit.

More than half of all adults in Brazil are overweight, but Momente is part of a growing movement of entrepreneurs, activists and models who are fed up with a fashion industry they say fails to fit their needs and shames them for their bodies.

"Society judged me based on one thing, so I took that thing and used it... to launch my business," says Momente, 34, dressed in a sheer black bodysuit created by Wondersize, the company she founded in 2017. 
 
The former real-estate agent, who sports a pink mohawk and multiple tattoos, got the idea after feeling uncomfortable at the gym in clothes she says were too tight, turned transparent when stretched or bunched up around her thighs.

She decided to find a seamstress to help her make her own workout outfit.

It turned out so well she quit her day job and plunged headfirst into the fashion world, she says.

The rise of colorful, stylish clothes for Brazilians with large bodies is part of a broader international trend rejecting unrealistic standards of beauty, especially for women.

The fashion industry needs to fit our bodies, not the other way around," says Momente.

Major brands tend to dedicate at most a small portion of their lines to clothing in larger sizes, leaving "repressed" demand, says Marcela Liz, head of the Brazil Plus Size Association.

The plus-size sector grew in Brazil more than 75 percent in the decade through 2021, reaching sales of 9.6 billion reais (about $1.9 billion) that year, according to the association.

It projects sales will hit 15 billion reais by 2027 in Latin America's biggest economy.

"Supply has improved, but we're still not meeting demand," says Liz.

The nascent industry sashayed through Sao Paulo this month at the Pop Plus fair, where indie designers showed off sparkling skirts, racy tops, T-shirts stamped with bold statements and other clothes in sizes ranging up to 70.

"The market saw fat people as people who didn't like fashion, who just wanted to hide their bodies," says Flavia Durante, the activist who founded the fair in 2012.

"We had clothes, not fashion," she told AFP.

"Fashion isn't just about consumption. It's about identity and dignity."

A new study published on Tuesday (August 15) suggests that maintaining a healthy weight can significantly lower the chance of developing cancer. The study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that men with high levels of cardiorespiratory fitness in their 20s and 30s had a decreased risk of contracting nine different types of cancer.&nbsp;

Jasmine's fragrant flowers have been used for millennia in India to honour the gods, and the scent is a key part of world-famous perfumes.

In the ancient city of Madurai in southern India, jasmine is omnipresent -- attracting buyers from some of the world's most recognisable perfumes, including J'adore by Dior and Mon Guerlain by Guerlain.

"It is one of the most expensive oils in the world," said Raja Palaniswamy, a director of Jasmine Concrete, which squeezes vast quantities of jasmine to create a few precious drops of delicious-smelling essence.

The women picking the buds earn around $1.50 a day per day for about four to five kilograms -- with each kilogram made up of around 4,000 buds.

Once picked, the jasmine is rushed to market, selling for anything between 200 and 2,000 rupees ($2.40-$24) a kilogram on special days.

- 'Expression of love' -

The jasmine of Madurai, an Asian variety with the scientific name Jasminum&nbsp;sambac, was given a "geographical indication" tag from the World Intellectual Property Organization in 2013, which noted its "deep fragrance".

"It is lush, it is rich, it is vibrant," said Thierry Wasser, perfumer and "nose" at French beauty house Guerlain, speaking to AFP while visiting the jasmine operators.

The jasmine in Madurai has a "smoothness... and something floral which is immutable," Wasser added. Wasser sources the jasmine oil he uses from Palaniswamy's company.

As well as Guerlain, Palaniswamy said his company sells jasmine oil to companies including Bulgari, Dior and Lush.

In Madurai, the bright, white flower can be found in the homes of the city's residents, as strings fastened by women to their hair -- and in the sprawling 14th-century complex of the Hindu goddess Meenakshi, considered the guardian of the city.

Meenakshi is depicted holding a parrot, a bird associated with love.

Every night, people surround a shrine of the goddess with fragrant jasmine flowers as she retires with her husband Shiva in a grand, symbolic ceremony.

"When you understand that the purpose of this flower is the celebration of love and brotherhood and family and friendship; when you smell it, it takes another dimension," Wasser said.

"And to me this flower is the expression of love. Period."

-'Real fragrance' -

The process to extract the oil requires long hours of labour.

The women who pluck the jasmine -- be it for their deity, weddings, funerals or expensive perfumes -– have no time to romance its appeal.

In a jasmine field on the outskirts of the ancient city, women tenderly move the branches of the bush, looking for the perfect bud.

The processing factory runs around the clock in harvest season, with workers raking out fresh-picked flowers and waiting for the&nbsp;oblong-shaped buds to bloom.

"The minute it starts blooming, it starts emitting its fragrance," Palaniswamy said.

Late in the night, as the jasmine's sweet scent fills the air, workers collect the blooms and load them into extractors.

The freshly picked jasmine is immersed in a solvent to absorb the fragrance molecules to give a waxy extract called concrete.&nbsp;

The concrete is further processed with alcohol to remove the waxes carefully, which then results in a potent absolute. This absolute becomes the ingredient in perfumes.&nbsp;

Around 700 kilograms of fresh jasmine is reduced to just one kilogram of oil, selling for around $4,200, Palaniswamy said.

But Amsavalli Karuppuswamy, who runs a stall outside the flower market where she threads flowers into garlands, said the fresh jasmine will always outweigh any oil.

"I will continue to do this job till I die... women like jasmine, so that is why we are doing this," she said.

"The scents are not worth as much as the original jasmine flowers -- nothing can match the real fragrance of the jasmine."

Fact: Brain death is a condition resulting in irreversible loss of brain function. Although life support machines can maintain breathing and heart rate, brain death means the brain cells have died and the vital functions they control are permanently lost. Organs like the heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, and kidneys can be sustained for a short time with artificial support. The warmth and appearance of life on the life support machine can give families false hope. It's important for families to understand brain death and consider donating organs to those in need.

By registering as an organ donor or communicating your wish to donate your organs after death, you can potentially save up to seven lives by providing vital organs like the heart, liver, both kidneys, lungs, pancreas, and small intestine to those in need of transplants. Organ donation is a generous and impactful way to leave a lasting legacy and help others even after passing away.

When we talk about pledging your organs for donation or about organ donation after death, we are talking about Deceased Organ Donation. This is an organ donation from a person who has been declared brain stem dead by a team of authorised doctors at a hospital. A person is said to be brain stem dead when there is an irreversible loss of consciousness, absence of brain stem reflexes and irreversible loss of the capacity to breathe.

A lot of people think that whenever and however they die, their organs can be donated. That is not true. In India, organ donation after death is only possible in the case of brain stem death. Donation after cardiac death is common in the West, but in India, it is rare for donations to take place after cardiac death.

Although it is possible for organs such as the liver and the kidney to be easily donated from a living donor to a recipient, we should work towards an environment where everyone donates their organs after their deaths (if they can), so no living person should have to donate an organ to another.

A brain stem death or brain death results from a severe irreversible injury to the brain or haemorrhage which causes all the brain activity to stop. All areas of the brain are damaged and no longer function, due to which a person cannot sustain his/her own life, but vital body functions may be maintained by an artificial support system. This maintains circulation to vital organs long enough to facilitate organ donation. Patients classified as brain stem dead can have their organs surgically removed for organ donation.

A brain-dead person has absolutely no chance of recovering. Brain death is irreversible. Once brain stem death or brain death has been declared, the person is considered dead, but their organs are still alive through artificial means. This means that if a person dies at home or anywhere else, and their heart stops beating, they cannot donate their vital organs, because the organs of a person who has died a cardiac death will die within minutes of the heart-stopping. Therefore, the only time you can donate your vital organs is if you are in a hospital and have been declared brain dead.

In case of cardiac death, it is possible to donate your corneas and tissues such as bones, skin, veins, blood stem cells, blood and platelets, tendons, ligaments, heart valves, cartilage and even your body.

While the incidence of brain death is obviously less common than cardiac death, it is important to remember that organ donations will take place only if everyone is aware of when and how they can donate organs.

A deceased organ donor is kept on a ventilator after she/he has been declared brain-dead. They will remain on the ventilator until necessary approvals are taken and the organs can be retrieved. A brain stem dead person’s organ may stay alive for a period of time that may range from a few days to a few weeks. The longer it takes to retrieve the organs, the more they will deteriorate inside the body. Therefore, the entire process of&nbsp;counselling the family, taking permissions, etc., should be quickly taken care of. For this to happen, families must make a&nbsp;decision soon after the brain death has been declared.

Once the organs have been retrieved, they cannot be kept outside the body for very long and need to be transplanted fast. Within the stipulated time period, they should be implanted in the recipient for proper functioning these are -

For heart – 4-6 hours, lungs – 6-8 hours, small intestine – 6-8 hours,&nbsp;liver and pancreas – 8-12 hours, kidneys – 24-30 hours.&nbsp; 
&nbsp; 
The family of the donor will not receive anything, and the recipient is not charged for the organs. The recipients however will have to pay the costs of transplantation to the hospital where they are being operated. After the donor family gives consent for organ donation, all costs relating to the donor are borne by the hospital.

Unfortunately, mostly due to unawareness and prejudices, there is a huge shortage of organs that are needed for transplants. It has been seen in umpteen situations that relatives are hesitant and unwilling to donate the organs of their loved ones who have been declared brain dead.

Normally the transplant coordinator will approach the relatives with information about organ donation and explain that even in their time of loss, they can help another person to live. It is tough for the relatives at this point to come to a decision especially if they are not familiar with the concept of organ donation. This is the main reason why it is important for all of us to know about organ donation.

It is estimated that the total number of brain stem deaths due to accidents in India is nearly 150 thousand annually. Other causes of brain stem death would potentially add many more numbers. However, our organ donation rate is 0.86 per million population which is the lowest in the world, compared to countries like the USA, where the rate is 31.96 per million and in Spain, 46.9 per million.

The total number of deceased donors in India in 2017 was only 905. There is a need for approximately 5 lakh organs annually. Barely 2-3 per cent of the demand is met, and many people die of organ failure every year across India.

A brain stem dead person’s organ may stay alive for a period of time that may range from a few days to a few weeks. The longer it takes to retrieve the organs, the more they will deteriorate inside the body. Therefore, the entire process of counselling the family, taking permissions, etc., should be quickly taken care of. For this to happen, families must make a decision soon after the brain death has been declared. Once the organs have been retrieved, they cannot be kept outside the body for very long and need to be transplanted fast. Within the stipulated time period, they should be implanted in the recipient for proper functioning these are - For heart – 4-6 hours, lungs – 6-8 hours, small intestine – 6-8 hours, liver and pancreas – 8-12 hours, kidneys – 24-30 hours. The family of the donor will not receive anything, and the recipient is not charged for the organs. The recipients however will have to pay the costs of transplantation to the hospital where they are being operated. After the donor family gives consent for organ donation, all costs relating to the donor are borne by the hospital. Unfortunately, mostly due to unawareness and prejudices, there is a huge shortage of organs that are needed for transplants. It has been seen in umpteen situations that relatives are hesitant and unwilling to donate the organs of their loved ones who have been declared brain dead. Normally the transplant coordinator will approach the relatives with information about organ donation and explain that even in their time of loss, they can help another person to live. It is tough for the relatives at this point to come to a decision especially if they are not familiar with the concept of organ donation. This is the main reason why it is important for all of us to know about organ donation. Other causes of brain stem death would potentially add many more numbers. However, our organ donation rate is 0.86 per million population which is the lowest in the world, compared to countries like the USA, where the rate is 31.96 per million and in Spain, 46.9 per million. The total number of deceased donors in India in 2017 was only 905. There is a need for approximately 5 lakh organs annually. Barely 2-3 per cent of the demand is met, and many people die of organ failure every year across India. Experts have noted that asthma frequently begins in childhood, usually before the age of five. It is the most common chronic condition of childhood, affecting millions of children globally. It has the potential to cause youngsters to miss school and even end up in the hospital frequently if not properly managed. However, there are several medicines that can assist asthmatics.&nbsp;

WION spoke to experts to get an insight regarding how to take care of children with asthma and allergies during rainfall. Dr Gajanan B Mankikar, Senior Pediatric Consultant, at Mankikar Hospital in Pune, said, "As the monsoon season approaches, it's important for parents to be aware of the challenges it can pose for a child’s respiratory system. Due to their developing immune system, children are particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of increased humidity, allergens, respiratory infections, and air pollution during this time of year."&nbsp;

"These factors can significantly impact their lungs, worsening pre-existing chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma or increasing their susceptibility to developing such conditions," Dr Mankikar added.&nbsp;

<h2>What causes asthma in children?&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>

Several experts have said that causes of childhood asthma aren't fully understood. More than one factors could be involved in it, such as the tendency to develop allergies that run in the family, parents with asthma, and some types of airway infections at a very young age. exposure to environmental factors, such as cigarette smoke or other air pollution.&nbsp;

Dr Manish Mannan, HOD Pediatrics &amp; Neonatology, Paras Health, said: During heavy and unforeseen rainfall, the humidity in the environment increases leading to the growth of moulds and airway irritants causing respiratory problems."&nbsp;

<h2>How to take care of children during heavy rains?&nbsp;</h2>

Dr Mannan said, "It is important to manage asthma and allergies in children during heavy rainfall by keeping the environment clean and keeping the medications for emergency prepared in advance. Parents must pay attention to the health of children and take proactive measures to ensure their overall well-being."&nbsp;

"Children should prefer to take the prescribed medicines for asthma and allergies prescribed by their paediatrician timely. In case of any symptoms, one must immediately consult the doctor," he added.&nbsp;

What to do:&nbsp; 
-Regular exercise and take a healthy diet.&nbsp; 
-Use dehumidifiers and ensure proper ventilation to prevent the growth of moulds.&nbsp; 
-Regular dusting and cleaning can also reduce indoor allergens.&nbsp;

Dr Mankikar also said that "to manage monsoon asthma, prioritise an asthma-friendly indoor environment practice good hygiene, monitor indoor air quality, follow an asthma action plan, promote safe physical activity, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and ensure annual flu vaccinations are up to date."&nbsp;

Dr Mankikar concluded that by incorporating these preventive measures and following the prescribed inhalation therapy, parents can effectively navigate monsoon asthma triggers and empower their children to embrace the season with confidence and resilience.&nbsp;

Autosomal recessive inheritance: Two carriers, or unaffected individuals who each have one changed copy of the gene for an autosomal recessive disorder, have a 25 per cent chance of giving birth to a child who is affected by the disorder. With every pregnancy, there is a 50 per cent chance of producing an unaffected child who is a carrier of the disorder, and a 25 per cent chance that the child won't have the disorder and won't be a carrier. If just one parent carries the mutated gene and the other parent doesn't, then none of their offspring will be affected, and there is a 50 per cent chance that each pregnancy will result in a carrier who is not impacted.

There are more than 60 recognised inherited kidney diseases, ranging from very rare illnesses to prevalent conditions. Some kidney disorders that are inherited include:

1. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is characterised by the development of many cysts in the kidneys. The degree of symptoms can vary. In most cases, symptoms appear between the ages of 30 and 40. Since ADPKD is a progressive condition, its signs and symptoms frequently worsen over time.

2. Alport disease is a kidney-damaging hereditary disorder that runs in families. Genes encoding collagen protein undergo alterations (mutations), which result in Alport syndrome.
