The internet can be a funny place. One instant we’re hyping influencers and putting them on a pedestal, calling them things like “inspirational” and in a beat denigrating them with racist, casteist slurs, calling them pretentious and unoriginal. This is exactly what happened with Nara Smith, a popular influencer who is famous for making foods from scratch. She is the one who bakes and cooks from scratch and has made a name for herself on TikTok and Instagram. But what’s wrong with that?
Nara Smith, a fashion model and influencer was recently trolled for posting “unreal” content as she poses in ridiculously expensive and beautiful clothes while getting her hands dirty to knead a dough or cut vegetables in her clean and luxurious kitchen. She is married to a fellow model and is a mother.
People who came across her videos on TikTok and fell in love with her, hate her for the very same reason – for looking too clean, for cooking food for her family and for perpetuating what they call “trad wife”. The label is given to those women who perpetuate traditional gender roles like a woman should cook and a man should head out for work.
Netizens pointed out that these were unrealistic standards and that she looked too clean and proper and that it was a setup. Many accused her of faking it too. Some claimed that these weren’t her own recipes as she claims and that she copied them from the internet. Also, who cooks in feathers and sequins, they asked.
In an interview recently with GQ, Nara Smith said, “People on Twitter had a field day, hating on us. I’d get screenshots of people saying insanely rude things—so hateful, and so spiteful.”
Debunking thoughts around her “trad wife” label, Nara Smith said, “It’s not so much about Oh, I need to make my husband a meal right now, or else he’s going to be mad,” she explained. “He does clean up. Which I’m grateful for because I hate that part.”
She added, “I want to build my life with them rather than trying to integrate them into my life later. And it worked out great. I love being a young mom.”
