What a surprise! Every die-hard Marvel fan is on cloud nine after it was announced that their beloved Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the superhero world. However, there is a slight change in the character he will play. Downey will not return as Iron Man/Tony Stark but in the avatar of a villain, Doctor Victor von Doom.
On Saturday (Jul 27), during Marvel’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Downey unmasked himself as Fantastic Four villain Doctor Doom. He will be playing the supervillain in upcoming movies Avengers: Doomsday and then in Avengers: Secret Wars.
At the panel, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige officially announced that directors Anthony and Joe Russo are returning to the Marvel world. The brothers will direct the forthcoming projects.
Talking at the event, the Russo brothers shared that only "the greatest actor in the world" could portray Doctor Doom.
Downey made a dramatic entrance wearing a green suit and a mask, alongside the set of people dressed in beige robes with robotic masks. Coming forward, Robert energetically took off his mask, sending the entire crowd in a berserk. "New mask, same task," he said. "What did I tell ya? I like playing complicated characters."
After bidding adieu to the Marvel world and the iconic character of Tony Stark, Robert Downey Jr's surprise return as a supervillain has sent the internet into a frenzy mode.
Reacting to the news, one user wrote, "A Doom variant that has Tony Stark's face. That sh*t is pretty smart if you're gonna do the multiverse.''
Another called him, ''the real marvel jesus.''
