Some people are big farters! Men in Black director Barry Sonnenfeld recently got talking about his experience directing the hit films on Let’s Talk Off Camera With Kelly Ripa podcast. He revealed that working on his 1997 action comedy was amazing but Will Smith is quite a “farter”.
In the film, Will Smith starred alongside Tommy Lee Jones. The film grossed $584 million worldwide to become the third-highest-grossing movie of 1997. The film turned Will Smith into a global superstar and the franchise a superhit of its time.
Will Smith is a big "farter"
When asked about something he vividly remembers from the set, Barry Sonnenfeld said that Will Smith and Tommy were shooting for a scene when Will farted and the stage had to be evacuated because of this. In order to film the sequence, the two actors had to be “hermetically sealed” in the pod that was being used for the car. They had to show they were travelling in a transforming car that travels at hyper speeds and flips over.
Barry said, “There are locks to prevent it from opening and falling. I say, ‘Roll camera.’ And I hear Will Smith go, ‘Oh Jesus, so sorry. Tommy, so sorry. Baz, get the ladder.’ And you hear Tommy saying, ‘That’s fine, Will. No worries, Will. Don’t worry, Will.’ Anyway, I don’t know what’s gone on, right?”
“So we race the ladder over. Yeah, Tommy reaches his leg out as the ladder is coming over, races down the stairs. And what happened was, Will Smith is a farter,” the director continued. “It’s just some people are. And you really don’t want to be inside a very small hermetically sealed space with a Will Smith fart. You don’t even want to be sitting next to him at the Disney ranch.”
Barry laughed and added that they had to leave the stage for “three hours”. He added, “And that’s incredible. No, he’s, you know, a lovely guy. Just, he farts. Some do, some don’t.”
Barry went on to direct two more Men in Black sequels. Will Smith starred in both – Men in Black II and Men in Black 3. While both were hits, they weren’t as successful as the original film in 1997.
