The reports were indeed true. In a major business move of the entertainment world, streaming giant Netflix has signed its biggest deal yet, as it acquires the film and television studio Warner Bros. Discovery.
On Friday (5 December), in a joint announcement, both companies stated that Netflix will acquire Warner Bros., including its film and television studios, HBO Max, and HBO.
Netflix to buy Warner Bros. and HBO Max in $82.7 billion deal
This has been described as one of the most significant deals of the year, with the streaming giant, under the leadership of chairman Reed Hastings and co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters, is set to take control of one of Hollywood’s oldest studios.
In the joint statement released, it was confirmed that the streaming pioneer will acquire Warner Bros. for nearly $82.7 billion. Under this deal, Netflix will gain control of Warner Bros. iconic content, including its film and television studios, HBO Max, and HBO. This means Netflix will own popular shows like Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, and Friends, as well as DC Comics and other beloved franchises.

As per Variety, the billion-dollar deal has the total enterprise value (including debt) of approximately $82.7 billion, with an equity value of $72 billion, the companies said in a statement.
The deal has been finalised after a weeks-long bidding war that had the streaming giant against David Ellison’s Paramount Skydance and Comcast.
After the new deal, Netflix said it continues to maintain Warner Bros' current operations and follow its regular plan without any disruption or major change.
Netflix said it expects “to maintain Warner Bros.’ current operations and build on its strengths,” including theatrical releases for films.
Will HBO Max's content be available on Netflix?
As per recent updates, Netflix will keep HBO Max as a separate streaming service and will not merge with the streaming platform. At the same time, it might be possible that some of HBO Max's content will be available on Netflix as well.
“By adding the deep film and TV libraries and HBO and HBO Max programming, Netflix members will have even more high-quality titles from which to choose,” the company said. “This also allows Netflix to optimize its plans for consumers, enhancing viewing options and expanding access to content.”
The deal is expected to close in the next 12-18 months.
