Fawad Khan's The Legend of Maula Jatt India release faces backlash: Read full story inside

Fawad Khan's movie The Legend of Maula Jatt is set to release in India, two years after the movie's original release worldwide. This is the first Pakistani movie to be released in India in over a decade.

Directed by Bilal Lashari, the movie starring Fawad and Mahira Khan, will be released in Punjab, India, on October 2. However, before its release, the movie faced a significant backlash fromseveral politicians who have asserted that they would not allow the release of Pakistani movies in India.

Ameya Khopkar, President of the MNS Cinema Wing, said in a statement to the Indian news agency ANI that they will not allow the releasein India.

Speaking to a news agency, Khopkar stated, "This movie will not be released. Not just this movie, we will not entertain any Pakistani film or actors in India... If this happens, there will be a strong agitation."

He also urged the public and political parties from other states to speak up against the release. Mentioningthe tensions between India and Pakistan, the actor went on to say, “Our soldiers are dying at the borders and our cities are being attacked… Why do we need Pakistani actors here? Don’t we have enough talent?”

Later, Khopkar gave a serious warning to cinema owners and also threatened Pakistani actors who aretryingto come to India.

A ban on Pakistani artists working in India was imposed after the Uri terror attack in 2016.

The Legend of Maula Jatt to release in Punjab

Pakistani period action films will only be released in Punjab, not across the country. Making the big announcement, the director of the moviewrote in a social media post, "Releasing in India, Punjab on Wednesday 2nd Oct! Two years in, and still house full on weekends in Pakistan! Now, I can’t wait for our Punjabi audience in India to experience the magic of this labour of love!"

Originally released in 2022, the movie is Pakistan's highest-grossing film to date with an earning of Rs 400 crore (Rs 4 billion).The film features Hamza Abbasi, Fawad and Mahira in pivotal roles.
