Elizabeth Debicki says The Crown 'ended in the right place'

Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana in The Crown.

Elizabeth Debicki, who we all love for playing Princess Diana in the Netflix hit series The Crown, believes that the show has reached a fitting conclusion and that it should not be extended with any follow-up seasons.

"I think it ended in the right place, really. It respected its own cycle in a way," she said.

Debicki praised the series' creator, Peter Morgan, for his ability to understand and execute the show's natural ending. "It always kind of knew where it was going," she explained. "Peter did an amazing job wrapping up such an enormous journey. When you commit to watching six seasons of a show, you need it to end properly."

Debicki played Princess Diana during the final two seasons of The Crown, which focused on the late royal's life leading up to her tragic death in a car accident in August 1997.

Reflecting on the series' sixth season, Debicki said, "I thought it was very respectful, and the depth and degree of conversation around how to end the series was immense. It was really delicate and intricately done."

She also praised the performances in the final season, noting, "I think everybody's performance in this season is really kind of magnificent. I know I'm biased because it's my show, but I think everyone did really incredible work."

Debicki also acknowledged the show's self-awareness, saying, "There are moments where The Crown is very aware of what it is. It's not trying to hide the fact that it's a drama and that it's a TV drama. I like that sort of self-awareness and the use of devices like that."

As The Crown garnered 18 Emmy nominations for 2024, including a nod for Debicki as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama, she expressed her excitement, saying, "I was so thrilled that so many of us have been nominated. That just feels like the cherry on the cake, really, of such a nice thing."

Looking back on her time with the show, Debicki reflected on the long journey she and her castmates have experienced over the past three years. "It's just a lovely end to a long and beautiful — but sometimes really challenging — chapter as actors," she shared.

All six seasons of The Crown are currently available for streaming on Netflix.
