Dill Dosti Dilemma - What is The Show All About?

Add WION as a Preferred Source

Adapted from the book 'Asmara’s Summer'by Andaleeb Wajid, director Debbie Rao takes us into the world of an awesome threesome, comprising of Asmara (Anushka Sen) and her two friends Naina (Revathi Pillai) and Tania (Elisha Mayor). The group of super-rich brats has nothing much to worry about. Living in the most extravagant and flashypart of Bengaluru, the trio shops, lives and shares every tiny detail of their lives apart from some very personal details. Thestory's main focus is on Asmara, the little fashionista who is super excited about her Canada trip, however, things don't go as per her plan and she ends up spending her summer in her maternal home with her Naani (Tanvi Azmi) and Naanu (Shishir Sharma), in the middle-class locality of Tibri Road.

From living a luxurious life to settling in a middle-class life, the transition is a challenge for Asmara, but what troubles her the most is what will she tell her besties, and to deal with it, she comes up with a very unique plan. Amidst all this, Asmara gets mixed up in life onTibri Road, where she finds new friendsand her new love, learns her culture, andends up being transformedinto a new Asmara.

Not aUsual Friendship Show

Written by Anuradha Tiwari, Bugs Bhargava Krishna, Raghav Dutt, and Manjiri Vijay, this coming-of-age show is not just about friendship or the typical Gen-Z dramas that we have seen multiple timesbefore, but there is a sense of uniqueness to the show, thanks to the credible plot.

In all seven episodes, there was a wholesome vibe that exuded through every frame and every dialogue. And, that is what makes you stick. Don't expect any twists or turns, it's a soft and fascinating female-led drama with a hidden lesson in every episode. What I loved the most about this show is how well the writers have blended the older generations with the tech-savvy world of Gen Zs, as they showed their different perspectives - the good and bad things, and how by accepting and learning each other's qualities, they can create a wonderful and happy world together.

What Works and What Doesn't

With a slow-paced narration, the way the makers have infused the vibrant yet ordinary character into the dramatic plot makes things entertaining. The plot does not have any big bombshells or twists or turns, but the way the writers have presented the story makes the show worth watching. The focus of the characters keeps on changing, for example, in the first two episodes we see, Amara's troubles as she adjusts to middle-class life, and her clothing sense becomes a point of discussion. While, in the next two, we see her learning the small things and we enjoy her romance with her neighbour Farzaan.

WhileAsmara's story is the main element of the show, her two best friends and their stories are also given decent screen space.

What doesn't go well in the show is the length and unnecessary additions that makethe show superfluous, especially in the first two and last episodes. The character and story are sketched and presented well, but as I mentionedbefore, some extraadditions make the plot lengthy and can make you impatient. The most disappointing part of the show was the climax, it could have been a lot better, as compared to the first six episodes.

While the makers ended the show on a cliffhanger, the way they framed the climax was disappointing.

The Cast

The great on-screen chemistry of the characters makes the show relatable. Young star Anushka Sen has done a commendable job as the lead characterAsmara. Her on-screen friends played by Revathi Pillai and Elisha Mayor are equally good in their roles.

Like always, veteran actor Tanvi Azmi managed to steal the limelight with her act. Shishir Sharma and Suhasini Mulay did their best. Kush Jotwani as Farzaan adds his charm to the show. Vishakha Pandey and Rukshana were entertaining too.

Final Verdict

Dil Dosti Dilemma is a simple yet entertaining story of a girl trying to adjust to her new life, as she discovers her true self and learns life lessons along the way. The seven-episode story may not seem that engrossing in the beginning but try to stick, and you will end up binge-watching it.

The show deserves praise for its writing and the performances of the cast.
