India and South Africa face off in a crucial Super 8 T20 World Cup match in Ahmedabad on Sunday (Feb 22). India's women’s team on Saturday (Feb 21) ended Australia’s unbeaten run at home as they won the third T20I in Adelaide. Playing at the Adelaide Oval and led by the impressive batting show from Smriti Mandhana, India edged Australia by 17 runs to win the T20I and thereby pocketed the series 2-1. The attention now turns to the ODI series, where India will be the dominant force, having won the World Cup in November on home soil.
Mandhana shines for India
Mandhana was awarded the Player of the Match for her match-defining innings of 82 runs off 55 balls. On the other hand, Shree Charani and Shreyanka Patil's 3-fers helped restrict Australia to a score of 159. Australian openers Georgia Voll and Beth Mooney gave a quick start to their side, smashing Renuka Singh for 18 runs in the first over. Despite a great start in the first over, Australia crumbled in the following overs. In the second over, Patil dismissed Voll for 10 off five balls. Wicketkeeper-batter Beth Mooney was caught out by Charani in the next over off Renuka at deep square leg. The Aussies lost their third wicket in the form of Ellyse Perry, who was playing her 350th international match for Australia, in the fourth over of Patil, reducing the hosts to 32/3 in 3.3 overs. Ashleigh Gardner was the only batter who stood out from the Australian side with 57 runs off 45 balls. However, she was dismissed on the last ball of the 16th over, bowled by Arundhati Reddy, as Australia slumped to 128/6 in 15.5 overs. Grace Harris, Sophie Molineux and Annabel Sutherland could not contribute much either as Australia ended their innings at 159/9, falling short by 17 runs.
What happened in Indian innings?
Earlier, India won the toss and opted to bat first. Mandhana and Shafali opened the innings for the Women in Blue as the Aussie pacer Darcie Brown faced difficulty in finding her rhythm in the opening over, bowling four wides and was smashed for a boundary by Smriti Mandhana with a cover drive. Arsenal have endured a tough last few days in the Premier League as they look to end their 22-year wait for a league title. The Gunners have been in fine form throughout the season but dropped points against Wolves, Manchester United and Brentford.

Premier League leaders Arsenal will have a high-voltage clash against local rivals Tottenham Hotspur as the two meet on Sunday (Feb 22) in the North London derby. Pressure will be on both camps for different reasons, as Spurs fight to avoid relegation, while any slip-up this weekend for Arsenal will see them lose their lead at the top of the Premier League. The Spurs fixture comes just days after Arsenal drew 2-2 against Wolves, dropping two crucial points. Rice backs Arsenal to bounce back "We're on our own journey, we're on our own path and we fully believe in each other. We want to do it because we've got such a good core group, such quality players now that we can do it. It shows that we can flick a page in terms of people talking about that mentality,” Rice said while speaking to Sky Sports. With scores of 26, 21, 3 and 3 in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, Jos Buttler has not started the tournament strongly. The 35-year-old has also gone 15 international matches in all formats without scoring a half-century, yet he remains England’s leading run-scorer in T20 internationals, amassing 4,003 runs in 151 matches at an average of 34.50 and a strike rate of 148.47. ‘You’ve still got to play…’: Jos Buttler on his form in T20 World Cup 2026

It must certainly bite and eat a hole in the hearts of the Australian fans when the heavens opened up above the Pallekele International cricket stadium at Kandy in Sri Lanka last Tuesday. What looked like a temporary cloud burst turned into a relentless downpour that forced the match officials to call off the Ireland vs Zimbabwe Group B game of the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup 2026. With the lights dimming in the stadium following the washout, a gleaming smile beamed across the faces of Zimbabwe fans as the Chevrons booked a spot in the Super 8s. Their Aussie counterparts added more moisture and precipitation on the ground as teardrops came drizzling down the cheeks of Aussie fans as their team bid adieu to the tournament following the shocking exit. Whilst the Aussies continue to grieve over the embarrassing and humiliating exodus from the T20 World Cup, the Emerald Island is tapping their feet to some new rhythmic tunes that are coming out of the ‘Castle Corner’ (a band of six Zimbabwe fans that have travelled to Sri Lanka to support their team), much to the chagrin of the kangaroos. The band of six, alongside several other motley groups of Zimbabwe fans, cheered and sloganeered to every wicket scalped and run scored by their beloved Chevrons. Locked and loaded in a group armed with heavyweights like Australia and Sri Lanka, nobody would have given them a chance to qualify, let alone finish undefeated at the top of their seeded group. Exploiting the absence of Captain Mitchell Marsh, The Chevrons jostled the Australian bowlers, getting to a decent total of 169 for the loss of two wickets with a half-century from Brian Bennett. Following this came a divine intervention in the form of Blessing Muzarabani, scalping four wickets for 17 runs in his four-over spell that included the likes of opener Josh Inglis, Tim David and Matt Renshaw, breaking the lynchpin or the cog in the Australian run chase, bowling them out before the end of the 20th over. Days later, after humbling Australia, the next task at hand for Zimbabwe was taming the co-hosts Sri Lanka in their own backyard. Roaring their way through the tournament by steamrolling Australia by 8 wickets, many might have expected Sri Lanka to romp Zimbabwe and finish undefeated on top of Group B. But the Chevrons had other ideas. Restricting Sri Lanka to 178, Zimbabwe ensnared the Sri Lankan spinners and went about their business chasing the target with three balls to spare. Defending a target, Zimbabwe gave a giant killing sting to Australia. On the other hand, while chasing a target against Sri Lanka, the Chevrons made a statement that their victory was not a flash in the pan. T20 World Cup 2026: And out of nowhere comes a shocking sting from Zimbabwe

Australia salvaged pride in their final T20 World Cup 2026 game on Friday (Feb 20) as they beat Oman by nine wickets. Riding on an excellent batting display from Mitchell Marsh (unbeaten 64) and Adam Zampa’s (21/4) neat bowling saw the Aussies home. However, that win was not enough for the 2021 T20 World Cup champions as they bowed out in the group stage, having lost to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka in Group B.
Australia salvage pride
Marsh reached his fifty inside the six-over power play and hit four sixes and seven fours in all as Australia, having bowled out Oman for 104, raced to 108-1 with more than 10 overs to spare. Fellow opener Travis Head made 32 and Josh Inglis 12 not out, but the win against a 20th-ranked Oman side will be scant consolation after a chaotic campaign in Sri Lanka. A depleted Australia failed to make the second phase for only the second time in the event's history after defeats to Zimbabwe and co-hosts Sri Lanka. "As I've said a few times, it's a bitterly disappointed change room," said Marsh. "Like every team, we built towards this for two years. Australia salvage pride Marsh reached his fifty inside the six-over power play and hit four sixes and seven fours in all as Australia, having bowled out Oman for 104, raced to 108-1 with more than 10 overs to spare. Unfortunately, in a couple of key games, we just didn't play our best cricket." T20 World Cup 2026: Australia salvage pride in dead-rubber clash, beat Oman in final group game

Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir has compared India opener Abhishek Sharma to Pakistan’s Saim Ayub, saying both players have faced similar challenges early in their careers. Abhishek is yet to open his account in the T20 World Cup 2026, having been dismissed for duck in all three matches he has played and also missed one game due to a serious stomach infection. Amir believes Abhishek is trying to hit every ball for a big shot, adding that while this approach may work sometimes, but in international cricket, bowlers will soon find out your weakness. “Saim (Ayub) had the same issue when he came to play the PSL a few years back. He was new and was hitting no-look shots. Nobody knew his weakness because most of his shots were on the leg side. Now, if you bowl at the third or fourth stump line, he struggles to decide. Even in his last two matches, he was dismissed playing on the offside. Unless he improves his offside game, he cannot progress. Strong bowlers will always test your weakness and push you out of your comfort zone. Same for Abhishek. He wants every ball in the slot so he can hit. But at the bigger stages, or in ODIs, har ball lapete mein nahi le sakte (you cannot slog every ball in pressure cricket). Salman Agha and Aryna Dutta got him out in a similar fashion. Jonathan Trott became emotional during his final press conference as Afghanistan’s coach after their T20 World Cup 2026 clash against Canada at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Trott had been in charge of the team since 2022 and will step down after the tournament ends. During his time as coach, Trott change fortunes of Afghanistan team into one of the most exciting teams in the world cricket. The former England batter led them to a great campaign at the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup, where they beat Pakistan, England and Sri Lanka and also gave Australia a very close fight. In the last edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Afghanistan reached the semi-finals after winning against New Zealand and Australia. Following the win over Canada, Trott attended the post-match presentation, where most questions focused on his journey with Afghanistan cricket and the team’s future. Reflecting on his early days, especially his first tour to Ireland, Trott got emotional as he recalled recognising the immense talent within the squad. "Well I just think and I could sit here and tell you so many stories of things that I've seen with my own eyes but in the talent, yeah - I said I didn't want to get upset. I just remember my first trip when we were in Ireland and I just saw things that just realised that these boys are so talented and focused." "And if you just us to add a little bit of structure to the mindset, professionalism and the high standards that we hold ourselves to, not individuals but we hold each other to those high standards and professionalism. I remember seeing Ibra for the first time, I remember seeing Azmat for the first time, I remember seeing Gurbaz for the first time and thinking, what amazing players. Let's try and build on what we've got, this natural raw talent. Cool, thanks. And let's see where we can get to. We had the names Mujeeb, Nabi, Rashid, all these guys. But it's just one of those things. And I remember how chaotic that first tour is to where we are now is chalk and cheese," said Trott.
Watch the video

Still, they compete strongly on the world stage and people now expect them to reach semi-finals and finals. Trott said this shows their strength, talent and ability to handle the pressure. "Players need so much credit because the level they operate at and the advantages and the things that they're afforded as youngsters to develop their skills and their passion for the game. They operate at such a high level compared to what they're afforded compared to other countries, but yet they can come on this stage and compete and almost people expect us to be in the semifinals and finals, which I find amazing that they can do that, handle the pressure, but also the background, they don't have the sort of day-to-day coaching that young players have, academies and facilities and all these things and schooling," added Trott. Before the Canada match, captain Rashid Khan praised Trott for his work with the team. Ibrahim Zadran also dedicated his Player of the Match award to the outgoing coach. Trott thanked all his players and said he respects them greatly and added that he had far more coaching support during his own career than they did. Even after leaving his role, he said he will continue to support the team and hopes they keep succeeding. "The amount of coaching I've had compared to the coaching that these guys are now operating at international levels is chalk and cheese. So, I take my hat off to every single one of them. And, so for me, it's the level they operate will always amaze me and from watching from afar, I'll always be very fond and want the guys to do well," said Trott.

The T20 World Cup 2026 group stage is all but with only one match left, Australia vs Oman (Feb 20), which will have no impact on the placing of Super 8 teams. The group matches saw top two teams from each group advance to Super 8 but the pre-seeding done by the ICC has created a situation fans and experts are calling 'nonsense.' After Zimbabwe beat Sri Lanka in Gruop B match on Thursday (Feb 19), pre-seeding meant that all group-topping teams from each group are placed in Super 8 Group X while the second-finishing teams in group-stage are placed in Group Y - prompting a call out against pre-seeding done by the ICC as a means to set up an India vs Pakistan knockout match.
What is pre-seeding in T20 World Cup 2026?
The ICC, while annoucning the groups, fixtures, and schedule for the T20 World Cup 2026, also shared Super 8 groups based on pre-determined and expected results. The Indian Premier League (IPL) have gone global, having acquired stakes in teams in various T20 leaues across the world including England's The Hundred. Four the eight teams in the Hundred are now partly owned by IPL - Manchester Super Giants, MI London, Southern Brave and Sunrisers Leeds. With an auction planned for next month, it is being reported that the IPL-linked teams will steer clear of Pakistan players - a trend visible in different leagues with IPL-linked owners. While not many Pakistan players have aprticipated in the Hundred, there have been a few names involved including Shaheen Afridi, Shadab Khan and Haris Rauf in previous season along with Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim in last season before the new owners came in.
Which IPL franchises own teams in the Hundred
As part of the process to bring private investment in the Hundred, the England Cricket Board (ECB) sold its 49 per cent stake in the franchises while counties (team bases) had the choise of selling a part of complete 51 per cent share.
