PCB accepts Babar Azam's resignation as skipper; adores his professionalism, commitment to Pakistan cricket

On Wednesday (Oct 2), New Zealand Test captain Tim Southee stepped down from the post ahead of the three-match Test series versus India. Prior to the three Tests, starting on Oct 16 in India, Southee has announced his decision to step down as the red-ball captain after leading the side in only 14 matches. Given the dip in his own performance&nbsp;since taking over, Southee feels he can best serve the side by focusing on his bowling and getting back to his usual form. Tom Latham will take over from Southee in the forthcoming India series.

In a statement, shared by the Black Caps, Southee said, "Captaining the BlackCaps in a format that’s so special to me, has been an absolute honour and a privilege."

He opined, "I have always tried to put the team first throughout my career and I believe this decision is the best for the team. I believe the way I can best serve the team moving forward is focusing on my performances on the field and getting back to my best, to continue taking wickets and helping New Zealand win Test matches."

Southee added, "I will, as I have always done, continue to support my teammates, especially the exciting young bowlers making their way on the international stage. I wish Tom all the best in the role and he knows I'll be there to support him on his journey, as he has done for me over the years."

Meanwhile, NZ coach Gary Stead added, "It is not easy giving up something you love, but Tim is a true team man and he’s made the decision with the team’s best interests at heart. He is one of our greatest ever players and we still very much see him playing a part in our Test side moving forward."

Southee led NZ in 14 Tests with six wins and equal number of losses, along with two draws.&nbsp;However, the pacer&nbsp;could not perform to the best of his abilities as skipper.&nbsp;In 14 Tests,&nbsp;Southee accounted for 35 wickets at an average of 38.60; i.e. well&nbsp;above his career average of 28.99. The 35-year-old only managed&nbsp;two wickets in his side's two Tests in Sri Lanka, which they lost 2-0, after bowling 49 overs.

Latham, who has led the Kiwis in nine Tests from 2020-22, will take over from Southee -- who succeeded Kane Williamson -- with his first assignment against the daunting Rohit Sharma-led Indian team.

Babar's decision might have surprised many but it was always coming given Pakistan's disastrous run in the 2024 T20 World Cup, in West Indies and USA. After him stepping down as all-format skipper in late 2023, he was succeeded by Shan Masood in Tests and Shaheen Afridi in T20Is. While Masood continues to lead the red-ball side, despite a winless run so far, Shaheen was sacked after only one series ahead of the T20 WC. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) removed Shaheen from the post, following Pakistan's 4-1 series loss to hosts New Zealand early this year, and reappointed Babar as the captain in the shortest format.&nbsp;

However, Pakistan's failure in the T20 WC -- where they lost to USA and India -- added pressure on Babar, who could&nbsp;only score 122 runs at an average of 101.66&nbsp;in the mega event.

Since then, Pakistan haven't played a T20I. Moreover, they are yet to play an ODI following their flop show in the WC held in India last year.&nbsp;

Babar's decision to step down&nbsp;comes after the Strategic Connection Camp - a workshop that was held last month to chart out the future plan for Pakistan cricket. It was attended by Masood and&nbsp;Mohammad Rizwan as well.

After two days of no play, due to rain and wet outfield, proceedings resumed in the opening session of Day 4 of the second and final Test between India and Bangladesh on Monday (Sep 30). As Bangladesh resumed from 107-3, being put into bat, Indian captain Rohit Sharma made heads turn as he took a one-handed stunner to remove Litton Das off Mohammed Siraj's bowling.

In the fourth delivery of the 50th over, bowled by Siraj, Litton danced down the track and timed the ball towards mid-off, where Rohit was stationed. Before the break, the visitors lost Shakib Al Hasan, with Siraj taking a good catch off Ashwin, and the onus now firmly lies on centurion Haque to take the visitors' score post 250.

Notably, 98 overs will be bowled on the penultimate day, on Monday, after rain disrupted the series decider significantly. India lead the two-match series 1-0 following a 280-run win in Chennai.
