Former Test greats Tim Southee and Vernon Philander have backed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mohammed-shami" rel="dofollow">Mohammed Shami</a>&rsquo;s plea to the ICC to revoke the ban on saliva usage in international cricket. After India&rsquo;s four-wicket win over Australia in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy</a> semis, Shami said as a seamer, he always tries to make the old ball talk, but because the ICC has barred them from using saliva, it makes it tougher for the quicks to reverse the ball, especially on batting friendly pitches.
"We are trying [to get reverse swing], but the usage of saliva on the ball is not allowed," Shami said.
"We keep appealing that we should be allowed to use saliva so that we can bring reverse swing back into the game, and it becomes interesting," he added.
The ban on using saliva to polish the ball first came into place five years ago in May 2020, when the apex body barred everyone from using it to avoid the spread of COVID-19 infection. Although that began as a temporary measure, the ICC made this ban permanent in September 2022.

India&rsquo;s pace spearhead at the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025 has urged the ICC to reconsider revoking this ban, with former seamers jumping on to back him.&nbsp;
"That was a rule brought around Covid with the virus going around the world, but I think as a bowler, you want to have a slight advantage," Southee said on ESPNcricinfo's Match Day.&nbsp;
"We see the game going the way it's going and seeing sides score 362, and more often than not over 300 in this format. I think there needs to be something in the bowlers' favour, and whether that's a little bit of saliva, then yeah, I don't see why they couldn't afford to get that back in,&rdquo; he continued.&nbsp;
<h2>Reverse swing would have helped Proteas</h2>
On the other hand, Philander also spoke in Shami&rsquo;s favour, saying that had reverse swing been in place during the ongoing tournament, it would have helped South African seamers in the semis tie (against New Zealand), which they lost by 50 runs.

"If we look at the state of that ball, I mean towards the back end, it was really scuffed up, and I think had you used the saliva [to polish one side of the ball], the element of the reverse swing might have come into play," Philander said.&nbsp;
"So, it certainly does play a part. You can get it to shine up and you use the elements to swing it a little longer.
"I'd like to see that element being brought back into the game because I think it's needed as well. I mean, especially in ODI cricket where we see batters really dominating, especially when you play on surfaces like we've just seen in Pakistan as well where it's really batter friendly,&rdquo; he continued.

Pakistan batter Saud Shakeel recently did what the national team has been doing for quite some time now - caught napping as the game moves on. Shakeel's instance, however, only impacted him mostly and the team to some extent as he was given time out for arriving late on the crease during the domestic President's Trophy.
The incident happened on day 2 (Mar 5) of the domestic red-ball tournament final between State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and PTV. The SBP were going good at 128/1 when Umar Amin and Fawad Alam fell to Muhammad Shahzad on consecutive balls.

Caught unware, Shakeel reached the crease beyond the stipulated time of three minutes. As soon as he arrived, opposition captain Amad Butt appealed and Shakeel was given time out. He became only the seventh batter to be given time out in history of first-class cricket.
After Shakeel departed, Shahzad dismissed Irfan Khan on the fist ball and completed his hat-trick as SBP were reduced to 128/5 from 128/1 in space of three balls.
The game was also played in unique situation - in overnight format. The final began on Mar 4 - after the holy month of Ramazan started. During the month, devout Muslims keep fast (no food or water) throughout the day for 30 days and only eat post sunset and before sunrise.
Keeping in mind the heat during the day time coupled with no food or water situation, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) kept the timings of the game from 7:30 pm to 2:30 am (next day).
As for the match, PTV bowled out SBP for 205 in the first innings after getting an opening. For SBP, Imran Butt top scored with 89 while his opening partner Rameez Aziz contributed 40 runs. For PTV, Shahzad took 5/22 and Ali Usman took 2/10.

New Zealand won their semi-final against South Africa in the Champions Trophy on Mar 5 in Lahore, Pakistan but they may lose pacer Matt Henry to an injury. New Zealand face India in the final on Mar 9 in Dubai - a venue where the Kiwis lost in the group-stage four days ago to the same opponent. Henry was the best Kiwi bowler in the match - taking 5/48 albeit in a lost cause.

David Miller, who scored unbeaten 100 but couldn't take his team South Africa home in the semis, has backed the Kiwis to beat India in the Champions Trophy final. This is the third consecutive ICC tournament when they have suffered a heartbreak or how some fans would see: 'choked again'.
They lost in the semis of 2023 ODI World Cup semis against Australia and against India in the T20 World Cup 2024 Final before losing another semi-final on Wednesday (Mar 5). There next hope will be to win the WTC 2025 Final later this year against Australia.

Even though Pakistan is the designated host of the eight-tournament, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/champions-trophy-new-zealand-set-up-summit-clash-with-india-after-beating-south-africa-8808040" rel="dofollow">Dubai will stage the mega final between India and New Zealand</a> this Sunday; fans worldwide, barring from India, are going all out against it, 'hate-watching' Indian cricket.
<h2>So, how did Dubai come into Champions Trophy picture?&nbsp;</h2>
After the ICC finalised Pakistan as the host for the first showpiece event of the year, the Indian cricket body BCCI refused to send its team across the border due to security concerns.
The BCCI formally informed the apex body about its decision late last year, later persuading them to convince the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to accept the hybrid model for India to play, which they were already familiar with, having co-hosted the 2023 Asia Cup along with Sri Lanka.
The PCB sternly rejected this offer initially, urging the ICC to convince India to travel to Pakistan like every other participating nation. After receiving a firm no from its counterpart, the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/champions-trophy-2025-pakistan-agree-to-hybrid-model-but-place-few-conditions-report-780604" rel="dofollow">PCB eventually accepted the hybrid model</a>, and India confirmed its participation. The ICC and the PCB zeroed in on Dubai as the neutral venue to host all India matches.
Soon, the tournament itinerary was out, and India, placed in Group A, was scheduled to play all its matches in Dubai, including the knockouts.
The ICC formulated the schedule in such a way that, should India qualify for the semis, regardless of where they finish on the points table, they will face their opponents in Dubai on a fixed date. This was seen by some critics as a mockery of the regular system that used to determine who faces who in the last four of an ICC event.
<h3>Where did the problem begin?</h3>
Unaware of the upcoming logistical challenges, all participating teams kept quiet about the schedule earlier. But trouble began once the tournament began and every team in India&rsquo;s group, including the host Pakistan, started to travel back and forth to Dubai.
While every other team had to change hotels, venues and training grounds regularly, India had the privilege of staying put at the same hotel in Dubai, practice at the same training ground and, importantly, play all their matches at the same venue, requiring less effort to acclimatise to the conditions compared to others. Going by the results of their contested matches thus far, India simply played better cricket and looked more composed across both innings, which helped them stay at the top.&nbsp;
However, fans from other countries, mainly Pakistan, flooded social media with counterarguments, showing displeasure over the host nation not getting a chance to stage the tournament finale.
<h3>Who said what?</h3>
Many journalists, analysts, former and current cricketers, and countless fans, began slamming the ICC, accusing them of favouring India in this tournament, with the others bearing the brunt.&nbsp;
While Pat Cummins denied making any remarks on India playing at one venue benefiting them, CODE Cricket &ndash; an Australian outlet, posted comments made by former England cricketer-turned-broadcaster Jonathan Agnew.
"I feel very uncomfortable about the way that India is being treated at the moment," he said in a chat with ABC Sport. "This is wrong; if you're going to play international tournaments, you can't pick and choose where you play and where you're not going to play. I don't see how long this can carry on for. It makes a farce of these tournaments.&rdquo;
Former England captains Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain also joined in. &ldquo;What about the advantage India have in playing in Dubai, only in Dubai? Which seems to me to be a hard-to-quantify advantage, but an undeniable advantage,&rdquo; Atherton said.&nbsp;
His long-time teammate and friend Hussain added, &ldquo;It is an advantage. So, the best team in the tournament have that advantage. And I saw a tweet the other day saying, &lsquo;Pakistan host nation, India home advantage.&rsquo; It sums it up really.&rdquo;
&ldquo;They are at one place, one hotel, they don&rsquo;t have to travel. They have one dressing room. They know the pitch, they have picked for that pitch.&nbsp;
&ldquo;They were very smart in their selection. They probably knew what Dubai is going to be like. They picked all their spinners. There was a bit of debate with Indian media saying why don&rsquo;t you have gone for an extra seamer? Why all these spinners? Now we can see why,&rdquo; he continued.

IND vs NZ Champions Trophy Final | Why are fans 'hate-watching' Indian cricket?

South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma has lamented his and Rassie van der Dussen's wickets as the turning point for their loss in the Champions Trophy semi-final against New Zealand on Mar 5 in Lahore, Pakistan. Chasing the historic 363, SA choked again and lost the match by 50 runs after managing 312/9 in 50 overs.
"Ideally, you would've wanted the both of us to keep going - at least till the 30th over. We know how destructive our middle order can be when they're coming in that last 20 overs," Bavuma said at the post-match presentation.
"Unfortunately, we weren't able to set that foundation for them. Little bit of a soft dismissal, at least from my side. I think that just left too much for our middle order," he added.

After losing the first wicket for 20 runs, Bavuma (56) and van der Dussen (69) added 105 runs for the second wicket but the skipper's wicket in the 23rd over opened the game for the Kiwis. Bavuma also conceded that the 362-run target was 'above-par' and they'd have liked something close to 350.
"Yeah, look, I do think it [target] was above par. I think as well as they bat, we felt that if [the target was] anything around 350 - not over 350 - we'd back ourselves to chase the score with the wicket hopefully getting better," Bavuma said.&nbsp;
"But yeah, 360 was always going to be tough. It was always going to require someone to play well. We had David who did that, but we probably needed someone else as well," he added.
David Miller, who scored unbeaten 100 off 67 balls, also came under scrutiny for changing gears too late in the chase. He was 52 off 49 balls at one point and went on to score the next 48 runs in about 18 balls - getting everybody talking about why not attack before.
Nonetheless, New Zealand now face India in Champions Trophy 2025 Final on Mar 9 in Dubai.

'Not over 350': SA skipper Bavuma says target was 'above-par' for them to chase in Champions Trophy semis vs NZ

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mitchell-santner" rel="dofollow">Mitchell Santner</a>, the New Zealand white-ball captain, says he knows ways to beat India ahead of their face-off in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy 2025</a> Final this Sunday in Dubai. Santner, who orchestrated Kiwi&rsquo;s famous Test series win over India last year, said having faced India at the same venue earlier in this tournament could benefit them.

Earlier, India beat New Zealand in the group stage, but it took plenty of doing to get there. Be it in batting or bowling, the Kiwis did put them under pressure - something Santner believes could work for them this time.
"Being there in Dubai and putting India under pressure gave us confidence. You take in what things work and what doesn't," Santner said while noting ways to put India on the back foot in the Champions Trophy final.
Meanwhile, New Zealand and India share quite a rich history in the ICC event knockouts. While they emerged victorious against India during the 2019 World Cup semis in Edgbaston before beating India two years later in the maiden WTC Final at the Oval, the Men in Blue beat the Kiwis during the semis of the home World Cup two years ago in Mumbai.
Besides, barring Australia, who pushed India to limits in their semi-final match, New Zealand was the only team that looked like getting better of Rohit Sharma&rsquo;s men in this edition.
<h2>Santner praises Kane, Rachin</h2>
New Zealand batted first against South Africa in Lahore and went berserk. While opener Rachin Ravindra slammed his fifth ODI hundred, with all coming in the ICC events, former captain Kane Williamson completed his 15th in this format, propelling the Kiwis to 362/6 &ndash; the highest team total in the competition's history.&nbsp;
South Africa tried hard, with David Miller also completing a hundred on the last ball, but all in vain as they lost the chance to punch their semis ticket.&nbsp;
Praising his teammates for a standout show in the crucial clash, Santner said, "The platform we were able to set with Rachin and Kane and set up the death phase earlier was great. The finishers did their job.&nbsp;
"It's a cool feeling to make the final. We were challenged by a good side. We've had a go against India; look forward to do it again."&nbsp;
"The key for the bowlers (while defending was) to keep chipping away with wickets. It was good personally. What we speak about as a group is to apply pressure, but still take wickets. It was pleasing to get three pretty good scalps personally," Santner said.

Santner spills beans on mantra to beat India in Champions Trophy final

Almost an hour after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/champions-trophy-new-zealand-set-up-summit-clash-with-india-after-beating-south-africa-8808040" rel="dofollow">suffering a disappointing defeat against New Zealand</a> in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy</a> semis in Lahore, Proteas batter <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/david-miller" rel="dofollow">David Miller</a> threw his weight behind the Kiwis to beat India in the summit clash on Sunday (Mar 9) in Dubai. Miller scored a quick-fire hundred (off 67 balls) while chasing, but failed to get South Africa past the winning line as they lost the semi-final by 50 runs.
"I'll be honest with you. I think I'll be supporting New Zealand," Miller said at the post-match presser.

Miller, however, also commented on how this hybrid model took a toll on the teams travelling across three cities in Pakistan and Dubai for their scheduled Champions Trophy matches, saying it's &lsquo;not ideal&rsquo;.
New Zealand played their last league game (against India on Sunday) in Dubai and returned to Lahore early on Monday morning for their scheduled semis tie on Wednesday. On the other hand, South Africa, who also flew to the UAE (after their final group game against England) to have a little more time to prepare for the crucial semis clash, had to return to Pakistan (barely 12 hours after landing in Dubai) after learning that Lahore, and not Dubai, will host their semi-final clash.
(All of) it happened because the BCCI denied sending the Indian Team across the border for the eight-team tournament due to security concerns, further persuading the ICC to convince the PCB to accept the hybrid model (which they did during the Asia Cup last year).&nbsp;
After much deliberation and earlier denials to agree to it, the PCB accepted the model, finalising Dubai as the venue for all India games.
&ldquo;It's only an hour-and-40-minute flight, but the fact that we had to do that [was not ideal],&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;It's early morning, it's after a game, and we had to fly. Then we got to Dubai at 4 pm. And at 7.30 in the morning we had to come back. It doesn't make it nice. It's not like we flew five hours, and we had enough time to recover and recuperate. But it was not an ideal situation still.&rdquo;
<h2>&lsquo;363 never an easy target to chase&rsquo;</h2>
New Zealand batted first and posted 362 &ndash; the highest team total in the tournament history, with Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson completing respective hundreds. Though the wicket played out in the batters&rsquo; favour under the sun, it began spinning a bit more (than expected) during the chase, with the Kiwi spinners making the most of the chance.
South Africa had some handy partnerships, not to forget Miller&rsquo;s hundred, but the score turned out too much for the Proteas, who failed to reach the final of another 50-over event.
"It's not easy chasing 360 [363] even if it's a good wicket. There was no dew, so I think the wicket just deteriorated as the game went on. They spun the ball a lot more than us. It's just they got a little bit more purchase out of the wicket,&rdquo; Miller said.

Proteas Miller backs rivals New Zealand to beat India in Champions Trophy final

Former Australia quick <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/jason-gillespie" rel="dofollow">Jason Gillespie</a> has called Pakistan head coach and selector Aaqib Javed a clown for lying in a social media post. Days after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy 2025</a> host Pakistan got ruled out of the tournament following their winless run in Group A, Aaqib lamented too many changes within the board lately, leading to uncertainties among the players, as one of the reasons for the team's early exit in the home event.
After losing to New Zealand and India in their first two matches, Pakistan was on the brink of a shock exit, with a washout against Bangladesh confirming it. Addressing the media on his team&rsquo;s performance and decline, Aaqib said quick changes within the management hampered the team&rsquo;s consistency across formats, leading to their slow death as an Asian powerhouse.

&ldquo;We have changed nearly 16 coaches and 26 selectors in the last two years or so,&rdquo; Aaqib said in a media interaction.&nbsp;
&ldquo;You put that formula on any team in the world, (and) I think they will also be in the same situation. Until you get consistency right from the top down to the bottom, from the chairman down, then your team will not progress,&rdquo; he continued, as quoted by the Indian Express.
<h2>'Hilarious'</h2>
Taking a jibe at him on his Instagram story, Gillespie, who cut short his contract commitment with the PCB (as a bowling coach) last December, called Aaqib's remarks hilarious.&nbsp;
After the Pakistan board appointed him in April 2024 alongside Gary Kirsten as the head coach, both departed soon after within six months.
Gillespie said (at a time) when he and Gary were in charge of Pakistan's backroom staff in respective capacities, Aaqib tried all that he could to succeed them, which eventually he did.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Aaqib was clearly undermining Gary and I behind the scenes campaigning to be the coach in all formats. He is a clown,&rdquo; Gillespie posted on his social media handle.

Besides, Pakistan announced white-ball squads for the New Zealand tour, removing gloveman Mohammad Rizwan as a T20I captain while resting star batter Babar Azam for the shortest format. Though both returned to the ODI squad, the ace duo of Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf missed the cut.&nbsp;

After the Pakistan board appointed him in April 2024 alongside Gary Kirsten as the head coach, both departed soon after within six months. Gillespie said (at a time) when he and Gary were in charge of Pakistan's backroom staff in respective capacities, Aaqib tried all that he could to succeed them, which eventually he did. “Aaqib was clearly undermining Gary and I behind the scenes campaigning to be the coach in all formats. He is a clown,” Gillespie posted on his social media handle. Gillespie slams Javed Photograph: (Others) Meanwhile, the PCB appointed Aaqib just for the first showpiece event of the year, and with his team exiting the home tournament six days into it, the board is working on bringing in his replacement; however, until that happens, he remains in charge for the upcoming away New Zealand series starting March 16. Besides, Pakistan announced white-ball squads for the New Zealand tour, removing gloveman Mohammad Rizwan as a T20I captain while resting star batter Babar Azam for the shortest format. Though both returned to the ODI squad, the ace duo of Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf missed the cut. (With inputs from agencies)

Jason Gillespie calls Pakistan coach Aaqib Javed a 'clown', slams him for lying

New Zealand has stormed into the Champions Trophy final after a dominant 50-run victory over South Africa in Lahore. Centuries from Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson powered the Kiwis to victory. Now, they face India in a high-stakes title clash.

Champions Trophy 2025: New Zealand set to face India in finals

India&rsquo;s pace spearhead, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mohammed-shami">Mohammed Shami</a>, has openly acknowledged that playing all their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> matches at a single venue in Dubai has worked to their advantage.
Shami played a crucial role in India's four-wicket win over Australia in the semi-finals on Tuesday, with figures of 3/48 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Following the match, India&rsquo;s head coach, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/gautam-gambhir">Gautam Gambhir</a>, dismissed criticism that the team&rsquo;s consistent presence at the same venue was unfair. Due to political tensions, India refused to travel to host nation Pakistan, playing all their matches in Dubai instead&mdash;where they have remained unbeaten in the tournament.
The final, set for Sunday (March 9), will also be held in Dubai, with India facing New Zealand. Meanwhile, the other seven teams in the competition have had to travel between three Pakistani cities and the UAE.
Shami admitted that the familiarity with conditions had benefited India.&nbsp;&ldquo;It definitely helped us because we know the conditions and the behavior of the pitch,&rdquo; Shami said after the match. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a plus point that we&rsquo;re playing all the matches at one venue.&rdquo;
The tournament&rsquo;s hybrid model led to logistical issues, including South Africa having to travel to Dubai before returning to Pakistan within 24 hours without playing a game.&nbsp;India&rsquo;s strong record in Dubai continues, with nine wins in their last ten ODIs at the venue.
<h2>Shami calls for saliva ban reversal</h2>
Shami, 34, has been in fine form, having taken a five-wicket haul in India&rsquo;s opening match against Bangladesh. However, he voiced concerns about the lasting impact of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/icc">ICC</a>&rsquo;s saliva ban, which was made permanent in 2022 after being initially introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic.
&ldquo;We are trying to reverse the ball, but without saliva, it&rsquo;s not as effective,&rdquo; Shami said. &ldquo;We are constantly appealing to allow the use of saliva again&mdash;it would make reverse swing more interesting.&rdquo;
Fast bowlers traditionally use saliva to shine one side of the ball, which aids in generating late movement, particularly in the latter stages of an ODI. Currently, they are only permitted to use sweat.
After briefly leaving the field in India&rsquo;s win over Pakistan, Shami has since dispelled any doubts about his fitness. He has bowled his full quota of 10 overs in consecutive matches, reinforcing his ability to deliver long spells.
&ldquo;I am working on regaining my rhythm and contributing more to the team,&rdquo; Shami stated. &ldquo;I am ready to bowl long spells whenever required.&rdquo;
Meanwhile, head coach Gambhir lauded Shami&rsquo;s performance and dedication.&nbsp;&ldquo;He&rsquo;s a world-class performer,&rdquo; Gambhir said. &ldquo;The hunger he brings, the way he trains, the way he practices&mdash;that&rsquo;s why he delivers these results.&rdquo;

Sarah Bryce&rsquo;s journey in the 2025 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/womens-premier-league">Women&rsquo;s Premier League</a> (WPL) has been nothing short of inspiring. As the only associate player in the ongoing edition, she has embraced the intensity of the competition, relishing both the challenges and the excitement of being part of a high-profile tournament.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s definitely been a high-intensity tournament with lots going on behind the scenes as well, which has been fun to be part of,&rdquo; she said, reflecting on her experience. Having already played in The Hundred and the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/womens-big-bash-league">Big Bash League</a>, Sarah credits those stints for helping her adapt to the pressures of the WPL. &ldquo;I think I&rsquo;ve been lucky to be involved in The 100 for a few years now and the Big Bash at the end of last year, which has helped prepare me a little bit for it.&rdquo;
Playing for the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/delhi-capitals">Delhi Capitals</a>, Sarah has featured in all the matches so far, making valuable contributions both with the bat and behind the stumps. Her WPL debut was particularly memorable, with a quickfire 21 runs off just 10 balls against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mumbai-indians">Mumbai Indians</a>, shifting the momentum in her team's favor. Despite not always being required to make an impact with the bat, she has embraced her role with enthusiasm. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve not actually had to do a huge amount with the bat recently because we&rsquo;ve been doing so well, which has been great for the team. But I&rsquo;m really pleased with how it&rsquo;s been going.&rdquo;
Balancing the dual roles of wicketkeeper and batter is something Sarah enjoys, particularly the tactical element of the game. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s one of my favorite parts about cricket&mdash;the tactical side to it, the fact that you can be put in any sort of different situation and you&rsquo;ve got to find a way. I love that kind of thinking element.&rdquo; Adjusting to the number seven spot in the batting order has been a challenge, but one she has embraced wholeheartedly. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a slightly new role than what I play in a lot of teams, but I&rsquo;m really enjoying the challenge of trying to figure that out.&rdquo;
<h2>'I love training sessions'</h2>
Beyond her on-field performances, Sarah has found great value in working with the Delhi Capitals&rsquo; coaching staff, particularly head coach Jonathan Batty. Having previously worked with him at the Oval Invincibles, she has enjoyed the opportunity to refine her game under his guidance. &ldquo;They&rsquo;ve all been brilliant. I&rsquo;ve absolutely loved the training sessions, getting to pick their brains and get little nuggets off them.&rdquo; The experience of sharing the dressing room with world-class players has been another highlight for her. &ldquo;You can just pick up so much from them, seeing them go about their business.&rdquo;
Looking ahead, Sarah is eager to carry this experience forward as she prepares to represent Scotland in the upcoming global qualifiers in Pakistan. &ldquo;Obviously, getting used to conditions in the subcontinent is going to be invaluable,&rdquo; she noted, emphasising how playing in the WPL will benefit her international career.
Her long-term ambitions remain focused on helping Scotland qualify for major tournaments, including the next T20 World Cup in England in 2026. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s going to be tough work because it&rsquo;s only an eight-team World Cup, but that&rsquo;s a big goal for us.&rdquo; For now, her focus remains on putting in performances that help her team succeed. &ldquo;Being able to put in performances to help whatever team I&rsquo;m playing in be successful is the main goal at the moment.&rdquo;
Sarah Bryce&rsquo;s journey in the WPL is a testament to her determination and the growing opportunities for associate players in top-tier leagues. Her presence in the tournament is not just about personal success but also about paving the way for more players from associate nations to be part of future editions.
&ldquo;Hopefully, I can represent associate nations well and get more of us in future editions,&rdquo; she signed off.&nbsp;With her talent, work ethic, and hunger to learn, she is well on her way to making a lasting impact in the world of women&rsquo;s cricket.

Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson delivered commanding centuries as New Zealand stormed into the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> final with a resounding 50-run win over South Africa in a high-scoring semi-final on Wednesday. They will now face India in the summit clash on Sunday (March 9) in Dubai.
Opting to bat first, New Zealand posted a record-breaking total of 362/6, the highest in Champions Trophy history. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/rachin-ravindra">Ravindra</a> played a stunning knock of 108 off 101 balls, decorated with 13 fours and a six, while <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/kane-williamson">Williamson</a> anchored the innings with a composed 102 off 94 balls, including 10 fours and two sixes. Their 164-run partnership set the foundation for a powerful finish. Daryl Mitchell (49 off 37), Glenn Phillips (49* off 27), and Michael Bracewell (16 off 12) capitalized in the final 10 overs, adding 112 runs.

Chasing 363, South Africa put up a spirited fight but fell short at 312/9. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/david-miller">David Miller</a> dazzled with an unbeaten 100 off 67 balls, while Rassie van der Dussen (69) and skipper Temba Bavuma (56) provided strong contributions. However, New Zealand&rsquo;s spinners tightened the screws in the middle overs. Mitchell Santner was the pick of the bowlers with 3/43, while Bracewell (1/53), Phillips (2/27), and Ravindra (1/20) played crucial supporting roles.
South Africa started steadily despite losing Ryan Rickelton early for 17. Bavuma and van der Dussen stitched a 105-run stand, bringing up the team&rsquo;s century in the 18th over. However, Santner turned the tide, dismissing Bavuma in the 23rd over and soon sending van der Dussen and Heinrich Klaasen (3) back to the pavilion. Ravindra then accounted for Aiden Markram (31), reducing South Africa to 189/5 in the 33rd over. Wiaan Mulder (8), Marco Jansen (3), and Keshav Maharaj (1) departed quickly, leaving too much for Miller, who reached his century off the final ball.
<h2>Williamson, Rachin score centuries</h2>
Earlier, New Zealand&rsquo;s innings began with a solid 48-run stand between Ravindra and Will Young (21) before Young fell to Lungi Ngidi (3/72). Ravindra, in sublime touch, executed exquisite pull shots and back-foot drives to notch his second century of the tournament, following his 112 against Bangladesh. This marked his fifth ICC tournament century after three in the 2023 World Cup. Williamson, steady as ever, secured his 15th ODI century and his fourth against South Africa, making it three consecutive tons against them.
The Ravindra-Williamson combination proved too strong for the Proteas&rsquo; bowlers. Wiaan Mulder left the field with a strain after conceding 48 runs in six overs. Ravindra eventually fell to Kagiso Rabada (2/70), while Williamson mistimed a ramp shot off Mulder&rsquo;s bowling. Mitchell and Phillips then provided late fireworks, ensuring New Zealand set a daunting target.
With this emphatic win, New Zealand booked their place in the final, bringing the curtain down on Champions Trophy matches in Pakistan. They now gear up for a high-stakes showdown against India on Sunday.

Champions Trophy: New Zealand set up summit clash with India after beating South Africa

In the latest round of musical chairs for the captain's seat, Pakistan have appointed Salman Ali Agha their new T20I skipper - the fourth one since January 2024. This development comes days after host Pakistan's unceremonious exit from the Champions Trophy 2025, where they failed to make it to the semis.
The new skipper, who replaced Mohammad Rizwan, has promised 'high risk cricket' in the future and has already made aware of failures associated with that. Agha made the comments at a press conference in Lahore as Pakistan gear up to travel to New Zealand for a white-ball tour of five T20Is and three ODIs.

"It's an honour for me and also a challenge," Agha said at the press conference on Wednesday (Mar 5). "We've brought a few youngsters into the team who have been playing the brand of cricket in domestic cricket that we want to play in the national side going forward.
"We have to focus on our intent and approach. We have to improve that. In modern day cricket, these things are important. This is a young team and we want to play fearless cricket. That is high-risk cricket, which is a requirement in modern cricket. There will be failures with that approach, but we have to support our players," he added.
After failures in three consecutive ICC events - ODI World Cup 2023 where they lost to Afghanistan, T20 World Cup 2024 where they lost to the USA and ongoing Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan now turn focus on upcoming Asia Cup later this year and the T20 World Cup next year in India and Sri Lanka.
There was a lot of criticism for Pakistan after they failed to impress in home conditions with many former players calling for a complete overhaul for the cricketing set-up including giving chances to new players.

It was a night to remember for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/kane-williamson">Kane Williamson</a> at the Gaddafi Stadium as he etched his name in the history books with a unique milestone against South Africa. The former New Zealand skipper not only became his nation&rsquo;s leading run-scorer in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy</a> but also became the first Kiwi batter to surpass 19,000 international runs.
In the second semi-final of the ongoing Champions Trophy, Williamson rediscovered his form with a scintillating century against South Africa, reaffirming his status as one of the &lsquo;Fab Four.&rsquo; After a few quiet outings with the bat, he roared back to life, crafting a brilliant 102 off 94 balls, laced with ten boundaries and two towering sixes.
With <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/rachin-ravindra">Rachin Ravindra</a> anchoring the innings at the other end, Williamson capitalised on the benign surface at Gaddafi Stadium. His elegant stroke play and impeccable technique saw him reach his third consecutive ODI century against South Africa&mdash;making him the first New Zealand batter to achieve the feat and the first-ever player to score three successive tons against the Proteas.

Williamson&rsquo;s dominance against South Africa dates back to 2019 in Birmingham, where he struck an unbeaten 106. He followed it up with an unbeaten 133 in Lahore during the ODI tri-series leading up to this tournament. On Wednesday, he returned to the same venue to complete the hat-trick in a high-stakes clash.
So far in the Champions Trophy, Williamson has amassed 189 runs at an average of 47.25, including one century and a fifty. Across ten matches in the tournament&rsquo;s history, he has accumulated 534 runs at a stellar average of 59.33, including two centuries and four fifties&mdash;making him New Zealand&rsquo;s all-time leading scorer in the competition.
<h2>Kane adds another feather to cap</h2>
Adding another milestone to his illustrious career, Williamson became the first New Zealand batter to breach the 19,000-run mark in international cricket. Across 370 matches in all formats, he has now amassed 19,075 runs at an impressive average of 48.66, featuring 48 centuries and 102 half-centuries.
While Williamson put on a masterclass in batting, Rachin Ravindra matched his brilliance with his second century of the tournament. The duo replicated the historic feat of Indian legends <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/virender-sehwag">Virender Sehwag</a> and Sourav Ganguly in the 2002 Champions Trophy, becoming only the sixth pair to score multiple centuries in the tournament&rsquo;s history.

India spinner Varun Chakaravarthy took just one ball to do what hasn't been done ever against Travis Head in ODIs - a spinner getting him out in the first 10 overs in an ODI. Bowling his first and innings' ninth over, Varun bowled a slightly fuller ball which Head decided to pound down the ground. The ball, however, travelled only till long-on where Shubman Gill completed a brilliant running catch.
Before that, Head had never been dismissed to a spinner in the first 10 overs of an ODI and had scored 135 runs off 115 balls. Head's dismissal came as a huge respite for India which had been burned multiple times by Head's pyrotechnics, especially in WTC Final 2023 and ODI World Cup 2023 Final.

Head's dismissal on 39 off 33 balls put a break on Australia's free scoring as Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne had to do the rebuild.
Before the match, former India spinner Ravi Ashwin advised the same to skipper Rohit Sharma - give new ball to Varun.
&ldquo;New ball and give it to Varun and ask him to bowl over the stumps to Travis Head,&rdquo; Ashwin had said on his YouTube channel.
&ldquo;Travis Head shows all his three stumps and then clears his leg and hit it over the field. Varun Chakravarthy with new ball might give India an edge. It will be a mouth watering contest,&rdquo; he had added.
The spinner has been a late inclusion in the India squad after his sensational performance in T20Is against England prior to the tournament.
Varun made his ODI debut against England, which followed the T20Is, before being included in the Champions Trophy squad. The mystery spinner sat out the first two games but was given a chance against New Zealand and proved his worth.

The Women's Premier League (WPL) has brought a new level of excitement and competitiveness to franchise cricket, attracting top players from around the world.&nbsp;
In a candid conversation, 21-year-old Australian <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/phoebe-litchfield">Phoebe Litchfield</a>, who plays for the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/gujarat-giants">Gujarat Giants</a>, shared her insights on adapting to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/womens-premier-league">WPL</a> environment, the leadership within her team, personal and team objectives, and the impact of experienced players while speaking to WION.
Born on April 18, 2003, in Orange, New South Wales, Litchfield's cricketing journey began in her backyard, playing alongside her father and brother. Her father, Andrew Litchfield, a former Sydney grade cricketer, played a pivotal role in nurturing her talent. At just 14, she was competing in men's cricket, an experience she credits for accelerating her ability to face fast bowling and adapt to higher levels of the game. &nbsp;

When asked about the differences between the WPL and other franchise leagues she has participated in, she highlighted the unique energy of the Indian crowd. "I think the biggest difference between WPL and all other franchise competitions is probably just the crowd over here and how the fans get around it. I think of Australia, England, all of those leagues are very competitive with WPL but I think the biggest difference is the crowd energy. They just love their cricket over here and that's probably the biggest difference I've found," she said.
Speaking about her team and its leadership under Ashleigh Gardner, she expressed how the team has been thriving under her guidance. "It's thriving. I think Ash plays a massive role in helping us feel comfortable to just perform, play freely and have so much fun. She's a very laid-back character and continues to do that with her captaincy and pretty much leads from the front with her actions. She's very comforting and kind in the way she goes about it so it's great," she shared.
<h2>'Want to make history with Gujarat Giants'&nbsp;</h2>
Regarding the team's objectives for the season, she stressed their goal of making history for Gujarat Giants. "To make finals. I think that's the biggest thing for our team. It's never been done in Gujarat's history so hopefully we can tick that box off. Obviously, it would be amazing to make the final and win it but the first step is to make the finals in Mumbai."
Phoebe also shared insights about adjusting bowling tactics given the batting-friendly conditions in recent matches. She admitted that while she is not directly involved in bowling strategies, Phoebe believes the key remains execution. "I'm not in the bowling meetings because I'm not a bowler but I don't think it changes much. It's probably nice that these types of wickets come now once we've had six to seven games to practice our bowling. It just comes down to execution. We know what we need to do, we've planned, we know the people we'll come up against. It's purely about executing at the top of your mark and reducing those boundary balls."
While discussing the impact of experienced players like Deandra Dottin, she emphasised the confidence they bring to the squad. "It's massive. Knowing that she's coming in after me or in and around me is massive. Having her, Ashleigh Gardner, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/beth-mooney">Beth Mooney</a>, it just adds so much to our batting. A lot of trust in our ability to score big scores and knowing if one person doesn't come off, someone else will."
Looking ahead to her future in cricket and the role WPL plays in her career, she acknowledged how the league enhances her ability to perform under pressure. "I think WPL paves the way for a lot of young players to perform under pressure. That's the biggest thing I find with cricket. Coming over to these leagues and playing against the best players in the world, you've got to perform under pressure. As an Australian, we come over and play a lot in India. We've got a World Cup here in a bit. Going forward, it's obviously going to hopefully improve my skills. That's what I'm always looking forward to do. Keep improving and practicing. That's about it," she signed off.

Shukla&rsquo;s visit holds particular significance in light of the BCCI&rsquo;s earlier decision not to send the Indian men&rsquo;s team to Pakistan for the tournament, citing government directives. This led to prolonged negotiations between the BCCI and PCB over hosting arrangements, ultimately resulting in the adoption of India playing at a neutral venue. Under this, when either India or Pakistan hosts a multi-nation tournament over the next three years, matches involving the two arch-rivals will be played at neutral venues. For the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> 2025, Dubai was selected as the neutral location.
While no formal discussions between the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/board-of-control-for-cricket-in-india">BCCI</a> and PCB have been confirmed during the visit, Shukla&rsquo;s presence in Lahore is seen as a potential step toward improving cricketing relations between the two nations, hinting at a willingness for dialogue and future collaboration.

Then, turning to the younger players, he applauded their efforts, his voice filled with both pride and belief. “There’s some really special talent here,” he said, hinting at the bright future ahead. And then, this morning, came the inevitable—Smith announced his retirement from ODI cricket. When a young Steve Smith first stepped onto a cricket field in Australian colors, there was something unmistakable about him. His boyish smile, boundless energy, and nervous excitement made him instantly noticeable. Also Read: With Australia out, can India bury ghosts of Ahmedabad 2023 in Dubai desert? Making his ODI debut on February 19, 2010, against the West Indies, he came as a leg-spinning all-rounder. But beneath that fresh-faced enthusiasm was a cricketer who would become into one of Australia’s greatest batting minds. Smith’s rise wasn’t straightforward. Initially, a supporting player in the team, he soon found his true calling with the bat. His technique was unorthodox—his exaggerated shuffle, constant fidgeting, and relentless focus at the crease were unlike anything the game had seen. And yet, when he settled in, he was untouchable. His ability to manipulate the field, absorb pressure, and grind out tough runs made him indispensable. Over 170 ODIs, he made 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 fifties. He had an uncanny ability to turn a tricky situation into a match-winning one, and he relished the responsibility. His presence on the field was unique. Even in the tensest situations, there was an odd serenity about him. He would walk to the crease with confidence, tapping the pitch repeatedly, eyes scanning the field like a chess grandmaster planning his next move. His smile, sometimes mischievous and sometimes just a reflection of his love for the game, became a familiar sight. Whether celebrating a win, encouraging a teammate, or simply enjoying a contest, Smith carried an infectious energy that lifted those around him. A stellar career In 2015, he took over the ODI captaincy from Michael Clarke, a moment that marked a new chapter in Australian cricket. Smith wasn’t a loud or aggressive leader; he led through his sheer cricketing intelligence and the example he set. Under his leadership, Australia remained a dominant force, and his 2015 World Cup campaign was a testament to that. His century in the semi-final against India was a masterclass, guiding Australia to another title. As captain, he won 32 of 64 matches, shaping a team that was resilient and composed under pressure. Then came the biggest test of his career—the 2018 ball-tampering scandal. It threatened to overshadow everything he had built, but Smith refused to let it define him. His tearful press conference showed a man devastated by his actions, yet determined to make amends. When he returned to international cricket, there was a new steel in him. He was no longer just a great batsman; he was a symbol of redemption. Though he never regained the ODI captaincy, he remained a leader in every sense, mentoring younger players and delivering match-winning performances. By the time he announced his ODI retirement in 2025, following Australia’s semi-final loss in the Champions Trophy to India, his legacy was up and about. His final innings—a composed 73—was a perfect reminder of his class. As he walked off the field one last time in the format, there was that familiar smile, a mixture of satisfaction and gratitude. Steve Smith wasn’t just a cricketer; he was an artist at the crease. His journey from a promising leg-spinner to one of the greatest batsmen in modern cricket is one that will be remembered not just in numbers, but in moments—his fidgeting, his resilience, and that ever-present, boyish smile. Steven Peter Devereux Smith. The boy from Kogarah, Sydney. 15 years later, he has become a cricketing royalty and leaves a lasting legacy for Australia.

The final shuffle: Steve Smith's ODI career comes to a close

Virat Kohli played another superb innings as India chased down 265 against Australia to enter the Champions Trophy 2025 Final. Kohli top scored with 84 off 98 balls for India which included only 20 runs from boundaries and a whopping 53 singles. The innings was similar to Kohli's 100 against Pakistan in the group stage clash when he scored 72 runs from singles and doubles with only seven fours.
During the innings, Kohli also crossed 8000-run mark in ODI cricket while chasing and became only the second batter in the world to do so after Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli now has 8,063 runs in ODIs while chasing, only behind Tendulkar's 8,720.&nbsp;

His 183 is the joint highest score in an ODI chase along with former India skipper MS Dhoni's 183 not out.
Kohli's 84 was also his 24th 50-plus score in ICC ODI events (World Cup and Champions Trophy) - the most by any batter and one more than second best Sachin's 23.
Kohli also has seven fifty-plus scores in Champions Trophy - also the most for any batter. He went past Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Shikhar Dhawan for the record who all have six fifty-plus scores in Champions Trophy.
This is the third time Kohli has a fifty in a Champions Trophy semis - the other two occasions were 58 not out against Sri Lanka in 2023 and 96 not out against Bangladesh in 2017.&nbsp;

'8,063 ODI runs': Virat Kohli still second best batter in chase, even with 28 hundreds

As KL Rahul charged down the wicket and hit Australia&rsquo;s Glenn Maxwell for a six over long-on, there was an eruption of joy in the Indian dressing room.&nbsp;
From Virat Kohli&rsquo;s animated celebration to Rahul exulting in jubilation, a feeling of glee and happiness surrounded the Dubai stadium.
Yes, India beat Australia&mdash;this time in the semi-final of the ICC <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> 2025. The Indian team showed remarkable dominance, securing a spot in the final. But let&rsquo;s be honest: Can this win be equal to or greater to what India faced on November 19, 2023, in the ODI World Cup final? The answer&mdash;one can never know.
The 2023 ODI World Cup final was not just a match; it was a historic moment. Approximately 1,20,000 fans thronged the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, expecting a fairytale ending. India had cruised through the tournament with an unbeaten run. Everything seemed set for a dream finish. But then came Australia&mdash;relentless, unshaken, and as dominant as ever on the biggest stage.

That Australian side was a team full of proven match-winners&mdash;Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Starc, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/pat-cummins">Pat Cummins</a>, Josh Hazelwood, Glenn Maxwell, and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/steve-smith">Steve Smith</a>. A side that knew how to handle pressure, a side that had been there before, winning titles for fun. And in that final, Travis Head delivered a masterclass, crushing India&rsquo;s hopes with a century that silenced a sea of blue. The pain of that loss was immeasurable, and the scars still remain.
Now, fast forward to March 4, 2025. India beat Australia, but was this really the Australia we feared?
Come to think about it, this wasn&rsquo;t the same Australian team that broke a billion hearts in 2023. This was a second-string side&mdash;a team where only two players, Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell, had played over 150 ODIs. The likes of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazelwood&mdash;players who defined Australia&rsquo;s ruthless bowling attack&mdash;were nowhere to be seen. Marcus Stoinis had retired just before the tournament, further weakening their all-round depth.
Instead, Australia fielded a side with inexperienced players like Cooper and Tanveer Sangha, who had barely played ODIs at the highest level. The bowling attack lacked firepower, missing the venom that Hazelwood, Starc and Cummins brought. And yet, despite being vastly underpowered, Australia still put up a fight.
This semi-final was supposed to be a one-sided affair. India, with its world-class line-up, should have steamrolled this young Australian side. But the fact that Australia dragged the match into the second-last over despite missing half of their key players speaks volumes about their never-give-up attitude.
It was a win, but was it truly satisfying? Was it as defining as a World Cup final? No. Because deep down, every Indian fan knows that the Australia we conquered on March 4, 2025, was not the same Australia that crushed our dreams on November 19, 2023. That loss in the World Cup final was a heartbreak that can never be erased.&nbsp;
Yes, beating Australia in the Champions Trophy semi-final is a great achievement. But let&rsquo;s not pretend it washes away the pain of Ahmedabad. Some wounds take longer time to heal.
Now, with Australia out of the tournament, can India bury the ghost of Ahmedabad 2023 and go on to lift the coveted trophy. We will have to wait till Sunday, March 9.

With Australia out, can India bury ghosts of Ahmedabad 2023 in Dubai desert?

Former India spinner Anil Kumble believes that KL Rahul should have come ahead of Axar Patel in batting order during India's semi-final against Australia in Champions Trophy on Mar 4 in Dubai. Rahul came at number six as India chased 265 and scored 42 not out off 34 balls and hit the winning six as well.
"He [Rahul] should have come ahead of Axar Patel," Kumble said on ESPNcricinfo on the day of the game.&nbsp;

"I know Axar did a good job of getting that partnership with Virat Kohli but someone like KL Rahul coming in at that stage and this is what he can do - if he gets to 30, he will ensure that you cross the line. He does that and he does that consistently. Yes, he missed out on one opportunity in the last game against New Zealand, but otherwise KL is a class act. This will certainly give him a lot of confidence.
"There is a lot of pressure on him. If he does well, it's expected. If he fails even in one innings, suddenly the whole world comes after him. He was under pressure, even with his keeping in the last game, but today he showed what he is capable of," added the former Test skipper.
After the game, Rahul did acknowledge that he likes to bat up in the order but is used to being a floater in the batting line-up.&nbsp;
"I'm quite used to going up and down the order, so I'm just happy getting a chance to play in the middle and whatever role is given, I think it's really helped me understand my game a lot more and I've had to work on boundary-hitting a lot more in the last year or so, because the last ODI we played in Sri Lanka I batted at No. 6, so I knew that's where I'll be batting and [we] needed a left-hander in the top order," Rahul said.
