Indian captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/rohit-sharma" rel="dofollow">Rohit Sharma</a> completed his fifty in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy final</a> against New Zealand in Dubai. Playing his 11th ICC final across formats, Rohit&rsquo;s previous best was 47 against Australia in the CWC 2023 final; he surpassed it and hit his first ICC final fifty. The right-handed opener took the Kiwi bowlers to the cleaners at the start, smashing them for fours and sixes for fun.
Chasing 252 on a dicey Dubai pitch, Rohit began the innings with a six on the second ball, pulling one to deep square leg off lanky seamer Kyle Jamieson. He continued the onslaught against William O&rsquo;Rourke, hitting him for fours across both sides. As Rohit began getting into his groove, captain Mitchell Santner introduced Nathan Smith to the attack, only for him to suffer the wrath of Rohit&rsquo;s clean hitting.

<h2>Rohit&rsquo;s infamous toss record and NZ innings</h2>
Rohit Sharma lost the toss in the final, his 12th consecutive in international cricket, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/champions-trophy-final-rohit-sharma-equals-brian-laras-unwanted-odi-record-8836564" rel="dofollow">equalling Brian Lara&rsquo;s record</a>, with India losing its 15th straight coin toss across all competitions.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, for the nth time in this edition, this wasn&rsquo;t a bad toss to lose for Rohit, who led his bowlers to restrict the Kiwis under par-total in the crunch game.&nbsp;
New Zealand began brilliantly, with both openers (Will Young and Rachin Ravindra) adding 57 for the first wicket. Varun Chakaravarthy broke the stand before Kuldeep Yadav picked two quick wickets to put brakes on the Kiwis&rsquo; rising scoring rate. Ravindra Jadeja joined the party later by dismissing Tom Latham before Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips steadied the sinking ship.
Though they tried doing it for most of their innings, both departed soon after. Mitchell and Michael Bracewell completed respective fifties as New Zealand posted a fighting 251 for seven in 50 overs.

IND vs NZ Champions Trophy Final: Watch all New Zealand wickets

The sun blazed over the cricket stadium as India prepared for yet another crucial final. The echoes of past victories and disappointments filled the air, but one man stood undeterred&mdash;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/rohit-sharma">Rohit Sharma</a>. The Indian cricket team captain has already cemented his legacy, bringing India to the finals of every <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/icc">ICC</a> tournament. His journey had been one of resilience, determination, and an unwavering belief in his abilities.
Dinesh Lad, Rohit&rsquo;s childhood coach, spoke to WION's Athira Sasidharan about the young boy he had trained years ago. &ldquo;Rohit always had this unshakable confidence,&rdquo; Lad recalled. &ldquo;He never let criticism or setbacks cloud his mind. It&rsquo;s this positivity that sets him apart.&rdquo;
Over the years, Rohit faced his share of negativity. His captaincy was often questioned, his performances scrutinised, and whispers of his retirement loomed over every tournament. But as Lad pointed out, Rohit never let any of it affect his game. He was a cricketer who thrived under pressure, a leader who knew how to bring out the best in his team.
Watch the full video interview here:&nbsp;
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/jADwMKniNHc?si=wd3hHSSvEkXPkta_" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe>
&ldquo;He holds world records in T20s, has three double centuries in ODIs, and has led India to countless victories,&rdquo; Lad said with pride. &ldquo;People will always talk. If he started paying attention to the noise, he wouldn&rsquo;t be where he is today.&rdquo;
One such instance of Rohit&rsquo;s unwavering belief happened years ago when he was selected for Mumbai&rsquo;s U-19 team. Standing outside the selection ground, he spotted a luxurious Mercedes car. Turning to Lad, he confidently said, &ldquo;Sir, one day I will own a car like this.&rdquo; Lad had laughed at the time, knowing how expensive it was. But Rohit&rsquo;s self-assurance never wavered. Years later, he not only fulfilled that promise but went on to achieve greater heights on the cricket field.
As India gears up for the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> final, there was a quiet determination in Rohit&rsquo;s eyes. He had made a promise&mdash;to win the trophy, to lead his team to victory. His coach knew better than to doubt him. &ldquo;If Rohit says he will do something, he finds a way to make it happen,&rdquo; Lad said with a knowing smile.
And so, with millions watching, Rohit Sharma walked onto the field&mdash;not just a cricketer, not just a captain, but a man who had always believed in his destiny.

Dinesh Lad, Rohit’s childhood coach, spoke to WION's Athira Sasidharan about the young boy he had trained years ago. “Rohit always had this unshakable confidence,” Lad recalled. “He never let criticism or setbacks cloud his mind. It’s this positivity that sets him apart.” Over the years, Rohit faced his share of negativity. His captaincy was often questioned, his performances scrutinised, and whispers of his retirement loomed over every tournament. But as Lad pointed out, Rohit never let any of it affect his game. He was a cricketer who thrived under pressure, a leader who knew how to bring out the best in his team. Watch the full video interview here: “He holds world records in T20s, has three double centuries in ODIs, and has led India to countless victories,” Lad said with pride. “People will always talk. If he started paying attention to the noise, he wouldn’t be where he is today.” One such instance of Rohit’s unwavering belief happened years ago when he was selected for Mumbai’s U-19 team. Standing outside the selection ground, he spotted a luxurious Mercedes car. Turning to Lad, he confidently said, “Sir, one day I will own a car like this.” Lad had laughed at the time, knowing how expensive it was. But Rohit’s self-assurance never wavered. Years later, he not only fulfilled that promise but went on to achieve greater heights on the cricket field. As India gears up for the Champions Trophy final, there was a quiet determination in Rohit’s eyes. He had made a promise—to win the trophy, to lead his team to victory. His coach knew better than to doubt him. “If Rohit says he will do something, he finds a way to make it happen,” Lad said with a knowing smile. And so, with millions watching, Rohit Sharma walked onto the field—not just a cricketer, not just a captain, but a man who had always believed in his destiny.

Champions Trophy Final: Rohit Sharma said THIS to his coach years ago – And it came true!

New Zealand seamer Matt Henry failed to pass the fitness test, thus getting ruled out of the ongoing <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy 2025</a> final against India on Sunday in Dubai. Henry suffered a blow to his shoulder while completing a catch against South Africa in the second semis in Lahore. Though he remained under observation till Sunday afternoon, Henry shed a few tears after learning about his participation status in the finale on D-Day.
Henry bowled half-heartedly during New Zealand&rsquo;s last training session in Dubai on Saturday, with their captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/ind-vs-nz-champions-trophy-final-santner-on-varun-chakaravarthys-spin-mystery-we-know-what-his-threats-are-8835166" rel="dofollow">Mitchell Santner remaining tight-lipped about his participation</a> on Sunday. During the pre-game presser, Santner said, &ldquo;We'll be going across the road and training after this. Matt's going to have a bowl just to see how he is. India captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/rohit-sharma">Rohit Sharma</a> has matched an unwanted record previously held solely by West Indies legend <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/brian-lara">Brian Lara</a>&mdash;losing 12 consecutive tosses in One Day Internationals (ODIs). This streak, which began in November 2023, extended until March 2025, culminating in the ICC Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in Dubai. Lara had set this record between October 1998 and May 1999.
India&rsquo;s struggles with the coin flip extend further, as the team has now lost 15 consecutive tosses in ODIs, with 12 of them under Rohit&rsquo;s leadership. This surpasses the previous struggles of former Netherlands captain Peter Borren, who lost 11 consecutive tosses between March 2011 and August 2013. Despite this streak of bad luck, Rohit and his team have continued to perform well in crucial matches.

India and New Zealand had already faced each other in the group stage, where India secured a 44-run victory. Now, they meet again in a high-stakes battle to determine the winner of the eight-nation tournament, hosted across Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates. New Zealand had lifted the Champions Trophy in 2000, defeating India in the final held in Nairobi, Kenya.
Over the years, India-New Zealand encounters have been defined by key battles&mdash;whether it's Virat Kohli's masterclass in a chase, crucial supporting knocks from KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, or Kiwi pacers like Matt Henry and Trent Boult ripping through India's top order. More recently, both teams have relied on their spinners to dictate terms. The final promises to follow a similar script, with multiple subplots shaping its outcome.

Champions Trophy Final: Rohit Sharma equals Brian Lara’s unwanted ODI record

India take on New Zealand in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai. Rohit Sharma's men are aiming for back-to-back ICC titles while the Kiwis are hoping to end a 25-year-old white-ball ICC title drought.

Champions Trophy 2025: Once again Rohit Sharma lost toss, New Zealand to bat first

India is just one win away from completing a dominant run in the Champions Trophy! After an exceptional performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, the Men in Blue are determined to remain undefeated as they face New Zealand in the grand finale in Dubai. Will India lift the trophy, or can the Kiwis spoil their party?

The contest will be a repeat of the group stage match where India won by 44 runs. However, it is the Delhi Police who have stolen the headlines as their social media post is doing the rounds.<o:p></o:p>

Champions Trophy Final: Delhi Police troll NZ ahead of mega-clash, posts 'Team India knows how to finish...'

The ICC Champions Trophy final between India and New Zealand in Dubai is set to be a thrilling sequel to their iconic clash in the same tournament 25 years ago. With the title on the line, this match could shape the legacies of several players on both sides.
WION takes a look at the key battles and factors to watch out for:
<h2>Matt Henry's fitness: A decisive factor</h2>
The leading wicket-taker of the tournament, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/matt-henry">Matt Henry</a> has been lethal, taking 10 wickets at an average of 16.70, including a five-wicket haul. His ability to trouble India is well documented&mdash;most notably in the 2019 World Cup semi-final, where his early strikes derailed India's chase of 239.
Henry has dismissed Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill twice each in ODIs, with the duo averaging just 29 and 31.50 against him. He has also gotten the better of Kohli and enjoys an upper hand against KL Rahul.

If Henry is ruled out due to his shoulder injury from the semifinal, New Zealand will turn to Kyle Jamieson and Will O&rsquo;Rourke. However, O&rsquo;Rourke is not a regular new-ball bowler, which could work in India's favour. Jacob Duffy and all-rounder Nathan Smith are backup options but lack Henry&rsquo;s experience and impact. If Henry plays, India&rsquo;s top order will have a big challenge ahead. If he doesn't, expect Rohit and Gill to go on the attack.
<h2>India&rsquo;s middle order vs Santner &amp; Bracewell</h2>
New Zealand&rsquo;s spin duo of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mitchell-santner">Mitchell Santner</a> (7 wickets at 27.71) and Michael Bracewell (6 wickets at 28.83) have been effective, despite playing most of their matches on batting-friendly tracks in Pakistan.
Santner, who has 16 ODI wickets this year at an economy of 4.48, has troubled India before. His 13-wicket haul in last year&rsquo;s Pune Test showcased his ability to exploit slow conditions. Since 2023, he has dismissed Kohli and Rahul twice each, conceding just 37 and 2 runs to them, respectively. While Rohit and Gill have dominated him with strike rates of 125 and 116.6, the slower Dubai surface could make scoring against him difficult.
Bracewell has also gone under the radar, picking up 12 wickets this year at an economy of 4.36. How Santner and Bracewell contain India&rsquo;s engine room of Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and Rahul&mdash;masters of strike rotation and calculated aggression&mdash;could be a turning point.
<h2>Rachin Ravindra: The X-factor</h2>
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/rachin-ravindra">Rachin Ravindra</a> has been in sublime form, scoring 226 runs, including two centuries, in the tournament. His only failure came against India in Dubai, where he fell for just six runs to Hardik Pandya.
India has largely kept him quiet, dismissing him for scores of 94, 75, and 6. However, his prowess against spin&mdash;489 runs at an average above 61 and a strike rate above 112&mdash;makes him a serious threat. The 2023 World Cup showed his ability to dominate spinners, and if he gets going, India&rsquo;s slow bowlers will have a tough challenge.
<h2>Indian spinners vs New Zealand&rsquo;s middle order</h2>
India&rsquo;s spin attack, led by mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, could pose serious problems for New Zealand. The last time the Kiwis played in Dubai, Chakaravarthy dismantled their middle order with a stunning 5/42 while defending 250.
India also boasts an in-form spin trio&mdash;Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav. In their last meeting, New Zealand struggled against spin, crawling from 44/1 to 93/2 between overs 11-25. Despite having elite spin players like Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell, New Zealand could once again find themselves in a stranglehold if India unleashes another spin choke.
<h2>Fitness and fielding in Dubai heat</h2>
With temperatures expected to touch 34&deg;C during the final, fitness and fielding will be crucial. Both teams have some of the fittest players in world cricket, but endurance in the sweltering heat&mdash;especially while fielding and running between the wickets&mdash;will be tested.

Sports, Cricket: India-New Zealand encounters have been defined by key battles and with the title on the line, this match could shape the legacies of several players on both sides

The ICC Champions Trophy final between India and New Zealand in Dubai is set to be a thrilling sequel to their iconic clash in the same tournament 25 years ago. With the title on the line, this match could shape the legacies of several players on both sides. Over the years, India-New Zealand encounters have been defined by key battles—whether it's Virat Kohli's masterclass in a chase, crucial supporting knocks from KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, or Kiwi pacers like Matt Henry and Trent Boult ripping through India's top order. More recently, both teams have relied on their spinners to dictate terms. The final promises to follow a similar script, with multiple subplots shaping its outcome. WION takes a look at the key battles and factors to watch out for: Matt Henry's fitness: A decisive factor The leading wicket-taker of the tournament, Matt Henry has been lethal, taking 10 wickets at an average of 16.70, including a five-wicket haul. His ability to trouble India is well documented—most notably in the 2019 World Cup semi-final, where his early strikes derailed India's chase of 239. Henry has dismissed Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill twice each in ODIs, with the duo averaging just 29 and 31.50 against him. He has also gotten the better of Kohli and enjoys an upper hand against KL Rahul. Also Read: Champions Trophy betting: Despite ban, arrests, 'satta market' thrives with $57mn in play - Reports If Henry is ruled out due to his shoulder injury from the semifinal, New Zealand will turn to Kyle Jamieson and Will O’Rourke. However, O’Rourke is not a regular new-ball bowler, which could work in India's favour. Jacob Duffy and all-rounder Nathan Smith are backup options but lack Henry’s experience and impact. If Henry plays, India’s top order will have a big challenge ahead. If he doesn't, expect Rohit and Gill to go on the attack. India’s middle order vs Santner & Bracewell New Zealand’s spin duo of Mitchell Santner (7 wickets at 27.71) and Michael Bracewell (6 wickets at 28.83) have been effective, despite playing most of their matches on batting-friendly tracks in Pakistan. Santner, who has 16 ODI wickets this year at an economy of 4.48, has troubled India before. His 13-wicket haul in last year’s Pune Test showcased his ability to exploit slow conditions. Champions Trophy Final: Five key battles that could decide India-New Zealand final outcome

When Pakistan secured the hosting rights for the ICC <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy</a> 2025, it was seen as a moment of resurgence for the South Asian nation's cricketing landscape. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/pakistan-cricket-board">Pakistan Cricket Board</a> (PCB) and government went all in, allocating massive funds to renovate stadiums, improve infrastructure, and ensure a world-class tournament. However, as the event wraps up on Sunday (Mar 9) outside Pakistan, the breakdown of the tournament has left the country with more questions than answers, both on and off the field.
<h2>Billions spent in hopes of glory</h2>
The PCB reportedly spent PKR 12.8 billion on stadium renovations alone, including upgrades to National Bank Stadium (Karachi), Gaddafi Stadium (Lahore), and Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Initial reports suggested an overall allocation of PKR 8 billion for the entire event, but costs quickly escalated due to last-minute security and logistical demands. In addition, Pakistan was set to receive USD 70 million (approx. PKR 19.5 billion) from the ICC for hosting the event, but financial concerns mounted due to unexpected expenditures.
<h2>Empty seats and poor turnout</h2>
Despite the investment, the tournament saw shockingly low attendance, especially in matches involving the Pakistan cricket team. The opening game between Pakistan and New Zealand in Karachi had significant empty stands, a sight that was unexpected for a cricket-loving nation. Security concerns, high ticket prices, lack of promotional efforts, and the team&rsquo;s dismal on-field performances contributed to the diminishing interest among fans.
A particular low point was Pakistan&rsquo;s defeat to New Zealand in Karachi, a match where local support was expected to be high. Instead, sections of the stadium were visibly empty, leading experts to question whether the tournament had truly captured the public&rsquo;s imagination.
<h2>Pakistan&rsquo;s on-field disaster</h2>
The Pakistan team&rsquo;s poor performance added insult to injury. Expected to make a good run in the tournament and being the defending champions, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mohammad-rizwan">Mohammed Rizwan</a> and his team struggled against top teams, failing to reach the knockout stages. Their underwhelming show further dampened the enthusiasm of local supporters, leading to fewer ticket sales and a general sense of disappointment.
<h2>PCB&rsquo;s financial woes</h2>
The PCB, already dealing with financial concerns before the tournament, found itself in further turmoil as costs spiraled. Reports suggested that PCB chairman <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mohsin-naqvi">Mohsin Naqvi</a> had to sell his own PKR 3.5 crore VIP ticket for the India-Pakistan match to generate funds. With revenue from ticket sales failing to meet expectations and the cost of stadium renovations exceeding initial projections, the financial strain on Pakistan cricket is now greater than ever.
<h2>Was it worth the trouble?</h2>
With billions spent, dwindling crowds, and an early Pakistan exit from the tournament, the Champions Trophy 2025 turned out to be a financial and sporting disaster for the country. The PCB now faces tough questions about whether the investment was justified. While hosting a major ICC event was a significant achievement, the lack of public engagement and the team&rsquo;s disappointing performance overshadowed the positives.
In hindsight, the Champions Trophy was a high-risk bet that didn&rsquo;t pay off as expected. The lessons from this tournament will be crucial for Pakistan if it hopes to successfully host major events in the future without facing a financial crisis.
Meanwhile, a source close to the PCB said that officials were disappointed with the team's performance in the tournament, particularly in the match against arch-rivals India.
"The board leadership acknowledges that there is no justification or defense for the team's dismal showing," the source said.&nbsp;Pakistan is set to tour New Zealand for a white-ball series starting on March 15, while Aaqib Javed&rsquo;s tenure as interim head coach concluded on February 27.
"As a result, the PCB will need to appoint a head coach for the New Zealand tour. However, this appointment may also be temporary, possibly selecting someone from the National High-Performance Centre, as the board has yet to initiate the process of hiring a permanent head coach," the source added.
The PCB is expected to finalise a new head coach before the commencement of the next ICC World Test Championship cycle in August.

India is the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 winner.
During the grand final in Dubai on Sunday, India beat New Zealand by four wickets to clinch their third ICC Champions Trophy title, becoming the most successful team in the competition history. As India prepares to face New Zealand in the ICC <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy</a> 2025 final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, vice-captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shubhman-gill">Shubman Gill</a> has hailed the current batting lineup as the best he has ever been part of in his career.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Gill praised the presence of stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, along with a deep and in-form middle order that allows the top-order batters to play more freely.
"I think this is the best batting lineup that I have personally been a part of. Rohit and Virat are all-time one-day greats. Rohit is one of the best white-ball openers, and Virat is arguably the best ODI batsman ever," Gill said.

He further emphasised the depth in India's batting, crediting the presence of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shreyas-iyer">Shreyas Iyer</a>, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ravindra-jadeja">Ravindra Jadeja</a> for reducing pressure on the top order.
"In terms of batting, we have Shreyas in great form, KL, Hardik, and Jaddu, which gives us depth. This allows the top-order players to be more aggressive because we have strong backup options," he added.
Reflecting on past challenges, Gill admitted that India's top order used to face additional pressure due to the lack of batting depth. However, he believes the current squad has successfully addressed this issue.
"This was something we struggled with in the past. There wasn&rsquo;t enough batting depth, which meant added pressure on the top order to bat long. But now, we have more freedom to play our natural game," he explained.
With India looking to secure another ICC title, all eyes will be on how they tackle New Zealand in this high-stakes final.

Champions Trophy: 'Best batting line-up that I have been part of', says Shubman Gill ahead of final

In the ever-evolving world of women&rsquo;s cricket, Amanjot Kaur has emerged as a vital cog in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mumbai-indians">Mumbai Indians</a>' setup in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/womens-premier-league">Women's Premier League</a> (WPL). A retained player for the 2025 season, Amanjot has seen her role evolve significantly, stepping up as a dependable all-rounder in the absence of key players. With her ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game, she has become an indispensable asset to the franchise.
Amanjot&rsquo;s journey in professional cricket has been one of perseverance and transformation. Initially, a top-order batter in domestic cricket, her transition into a lower-order finisher has been a defining aspect of her career with Mumbai Indians. The change wasn&rsquo;t easy, but under the guidance of MI&rsquo;s coaching staff and experienced teammates, she has honed her skills to become a well-rounded player.
&ldquo;This is my third year in the WPL, so my expectations from myself are higher,&rdquo; Amanjot shared. &ldquo;With Pooja not in the team, my role has increased. I have to finish matches from the lower order, and I wanted to contribute as a complete all-rounder, not just in bits and pieces.&rdquo;
<h2>Evolving as an all-rounder</h2>
Amanjot&rsquo;s performances in the ongoing WPL have reflected her growing maturity. Tasked with coming in to bat in the lower order, she has delivered crucial runs in pressure situations, ensuring that Mumbai Indians have the depth to finish matches strongly. As a bowler, her role has been clearly defined&mdash;coming in after the powerplay to contain runs and break crucial partnerships.

&ldquo;My role is very specific&mdash;I come in to bowl after the powerplay,&rdquo; she explains. &ldquo;At that point, it&rsquo;s crucial how you carry the team&rsquo;s momentum. If the powerplay went well, we need to build on it. If it didn&rsquo;t, I have to restrict runs and create pressure.&rdquo;
She stresses that execution is key, saying, &ldquo;Sometimes your plans don&rsquo;t work, but there&rsquo;s no pressure. I know my strengths, my variations, and how to use them effectively. My main goal is to bowl as many dot balls as possible and break those crucial partnerships that can change the game.&rdquo;
Playing in different cities presents its own challenges, but Amanjot was prepared. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve played a lot in the domestic circuit&mdash;Baroda, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/lucknow">Lucknow</a>, almost every state&mdash;so I had an idea of how the wickets would behave. We prepared accordingly, practicing on red and black soil in Baroda and Mumbai, which helped a lot.&rdquo;
Facing high-caliber opponents is another challenge, but Mumbai Indians' meticulous planning helps. &ldquo;We have a team room session where we plan for every batter. We decide in which areas to block them, how to avoid leaking runs. Death overs are planned separately, middle overs are planned separately. That clarity makes things easier for me.&rdquo;
Playing in front of the passionate MI Paltan is something she cherishes. &ldquo;Our fans are more excited than us! Playing in Mumbai, in front of them, brings a little pressure because they expect a lot from us. Sometimes things don&rsquo;t go our way, but we try our best to make sure they go home happy after watching the match.&rdquo;
Reflecting on her three years with Mumbai Indians, Amanjot credits the franchise for her growth. &ldquo;I started as a top-order batter in domestic cricket. When I debuted for MI, adjusting to a lower-order role was new for me. But MI helped me evolve, teaching me how to handle pressure and finish matches from that position.&rdquo;
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s a myth that lower-order batters have to hit 10-ball 20s every time,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;Sometimes you don&rsquo;t have that much power, or you&rsquo;re naturally not a big hitter. But MI has helped me understand how to pace an innings, take matches deep, and break partnerships. I focus on all three aspects&mdash;batting, bowling, and fielding&mdash;which makes things easier for me.&rdquo;
As the WPL 2025 season comes to the business end, Amanjot Kaur remains a key player in Mumbai Indians' campaign. With her adaptability, composure, and all-round capabilities, she is proving why she is a name to watch out for in Indian cricket.

As the Champions Trophy final approaches, India and New Zealand are set to battle for the prestigious title in Dubai on Sunday (March 9). In front of a packed stadium, both cricketing powerhouses will look to etch their names in history books.
On the eve of the much-anticipated clash, net bowler Shashwat Tiwari revealed that the New Zealand batters faced difficulties against spin during their practice sessions. While bowling in the nets, he noticed that the Blackcaps were particularly focused on countering left-arm spin, even adjusting their lengths to mimic the challenge posed by India&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ravindra-jadeja">Ravindra Jadeja</a>.

With all eyes on the title on Sunday, Varun will be ready to rock the Kiwis again, but their captain Mitchell Santner admits having to crack his mystery code.
India and New Zealand will face off in the Champions Trophy finale in Dubai, and the Black Caps, having lost to the Men in Blue at this venue almost a week ago, are better prepared for the Indian challenge this time. Though Varun&rsquo;s stock delivery and a few of his non-conventional ones have already got the better of New Zealand batters, Santner believes he remains the mightiest threat to Kiwis&rsquo; title hopes, explaining what his toughest ball to face is.

Although the Kiwi captain admits his team is working on finding Varun out in the crucial match, he added that should the pitch remain the same, India&rsquo;s newest ace card could trouble them.
"A little bit of mystery, but it was the first time some of the guys have been facing him. I think they'll learn from the other day. If the pitch plays a similar way, it's going to be a challenge along with all three of their other spinners. I think the boys will be ready for tomorrow. We'll look at a little bit more footage," Santner said in the pre-game presser in Dubai.
"I think we obviously know what his (Varun) threats are now. That 115 kmph arm bowl that got me. That was a bit of a threat. But we know he's going to be a challenge," he added.

Although the Kiwi captain admits his team is working on finding Varun out in the crucial match, he added that should the pitch remain the same, India’s newest ace card could trouble them. Update on Henry’s fitness status New Zealand frontline seamer Matt Henry suffered a shoulder injury while completing a catch against South Africa in the second semi-final in Lahore, with the Kiwis sweating over his fitness issue. IND vs NZ Champions Trophy Final: Santner on Varun’s spin mystery: ‘We know what his threats are’

The ghost of the 2023 ODI World Cup final, where Australia beat host India in front of an over 100,000 crowd in Ahmedabad, continues to haunt the Men in Blue as they prepare for the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy 2025</a> showdown against New Zealand in Dubai. Ahead of the marquee final on Sunday, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/ind-vs-nz-vice-captain-shubman-gill-reveals-rohit-sharmas-retirement-plan-as-champions-trophy-final-2025-looms-8834685" rel="dofollow">Team India vice-captain Shubman Gill</a> admitted that &lsquo;big game pressure&rsquo; is real, adding they failed to get the better of it the last time but are eager and motivated to go past the winning line this time.
Gill explains what happens on such days and who stands tall.
&ldquo;The big-match pressure is always there. The last time (2023), we couldn't do it, but we will try to do it this time. In a big match, the team that takes the pressure out of the equation has a better chance of winning," Gill said in the pre-game presser in Dubai.

Adding further on what works for those teams that do well in big games, Gill said mighty sides are better at absorbing pressure while thriving on such occasions to play their best cricket.
Mentioning West Indies and Australia in the same breath, Gill said, &ldquo;This is the reason why we talk about big teams of previous years, including West Indies and Australia."&nbsp;
&ldquo;Those teams played their best cricket in knockouts and used to take out pressure from the big-match equation. Easier said than done, but good teams play their best cricket under pressure," he added.
<h2>Gill downplays Dubai advantage</h2>
Amid talks of how India enjoyed the Champions Trophy 2025 schedule, which many believe was formulated to benefit the Men in Blue, Gill downplayed any such reports. With India playing all its matches in Dubai, including the final, the right-handed batter shed little light on what was discussed behind the curtain.

&ldquo;We have played four matches here and done really well. But I think the last time we played NZ, despite losing three wickets early, we played a good match and won comfortably.&rdquo;&nbsp;
&ldquo;So, I don't think there is any added discussion. Obviously, someone in the top 3-5 firing would give us a better chance to chase a big total or put up a big total,&rdquo; he continued.
<h2>'India motivated'</h2>
India failed to win any ICC tournament since 2013 despite coming close on several occasions across formats. Gill feels after India clinched the second T20 World Cup title last year in the Americas, it broke that shackle, helping them gain winning momentum.
&ldquo;Once you get one title, it gives you momentum. You are not very desperate about getting the title. It's not good when desperation kicks in."
"Winning the title in 2024 doesn't mean we are less hungry, but it kind of gives us more balance that we have won an ICC title, and we will try to do our best to win this one," he added.

IPL franchise <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mumbai-indians" rel="dofollow">Mumbai Indians</a> have roped in South Africa all-rounder Corbin Bosch as a replacement for injured seamer Lizaad Williams ahead of the 18th edition of the IPL starting later this month. Bosch, 30, was part of the Rajasthan Royals bench before but is yet to make his IPL debut. The bowling all-rounder, however, has been part of the MI family elsewhere, having won the third edition of the SA20 with the MI Cape Town in February early this year. He picked up 11 wickets in seven outings, guiding his team to their maiden league title.

His overall T20 stats read 86 matches, 59 wickets at an economy of 8.38 to go with 663 runs, striking at 113.33.

Bosch made his Test debut during the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan in Centurion, where he created history by becoming the first player from the country to pick a four-for and put up a fifty-plus score on debut. His efforts in his maiden Test helped South Africa beat Pakistan in a close encounter and qualify for the WTC Final 2025 at the Lord&rsquo;s (June 11-15) against the defending champions Australia.
Bosch then made it to South Africa&rsquo;s Champions Trophy squad as an injury replacement but played just one warm-up game in Karachi.&nbsp;

Rohit was out of touch against New Zealand in the home Test series late last year, which India surrendered (0-3); later, against Australia Down Under, Rohit scored just 31 runs across three Tests, with India losing the BGT (1-3) for the first time in ten years.

While facing a seamer in the nets at the ICC Academy, Kohli was hit on his knee, prompting him to drop guards and stop training, per reports. The Indian physio ran towards him and applied a spray, wrapping the injured area with a bandage.
Despite suffering pain, Kohli remained at the training ground, observing the team practice from a distance. The Indian staff later clarified that the injury wasn&rsquo;t serious and that Kohli would be fit to feature in the Sunday showdown in Dubai.

Most Champions Trophy 2025 participating teams have shown resentment over India enjoying the much-talked-about &lsquo;venue advantage&rsquo; at the event. While every other team travelled across different cities in Pakistan and those in Group A to Dubai, taking flights, changing hotels, training and playing at separate venues, India was far from such logistical challenges.
After the PCB and the ICC picked Dubai as a neutral venue, accepting the hybrid model for the eight-team tournament, India stayed in the same hotel, practised at one training ground and played all their matches, including the knockouts in Dubai only.&nbsp;

The conversation began soon after the tournament commenced, with Pakistan, England, and later South African players criticising the schedule challenges faced by everyone barring India. While former England captains-turned-broadcasters Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton admitted India has an advantage playing in Dubai, Proteas batter David Miller revealed he will support New Zealand in the grand finale&mdash;the team that knocked South Africa out of the tournament in the semis.

Both players, integral members of the &lsquo;Fab Four&rsquo; alongside Joe Root and Steve Smith, have showcased exceptional form throughout the tournament, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown.
<h2>Virat Kohli: The chase maestro</h2>
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/virat-kohli">Virat Kohli</a>&rsquo;s journey in this Champions Trophy has been nothing short of spectacular. Making 217 runs in four innings at an impressive average of 72.33, he currently stands as the tournament&rsquo;s third-highest run-scorer. His campaign was highlighted by a brilliant century against Pakistan during the group stages, where he demonstrated his signature blend of aggression and finesse. In the semi-final against Australia, Kohli once again proved his mettle in high-pressure situations. Chasing a target of 265, he anchored the innings with a composed 84 off 98 balls, guiding India to a four-wicket win. His ability to rotate the strike and build partnerships was pivotal in this successful chase.
<h2>Kane Williamson: The epitome of consistency</h2>

Despite a rare failure against Pakistan, where he was dismissed for just one run, Williamson showcased resilience and class in subsequent matches. In the semi-final against South Africa, he delivered a stellar performance, scoring 102 runs off 94 balls. This innings not only propelled New Zealand to a formidable total but also marked his 15th ODI century. Champions Trophy: Will Kohli’s fire outshine Williamson’s ice?

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has handpicked middle order batter <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shreyas-iyer" rel="dofollow">Shreyas Iyer</a> as India&rsquo;s trump card for the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy 2025</a> final against New Zealand in Dubai this Sunday. Ashwin, who announced his international retirement midway through BGT late last year, admitted Iyer&rsquo;s form has helped India in more than one way, with ace batter Virat Kohli excelling at number three because of him.
Iyer (at number four) has been the best thing that happened to Indian cricket in a long time. Although injuries ate a lot of his career in the beginning, with his tussle with the BCCI over disobeying orders adding fuel to the fire, his return to the ODI setup boosted India&rsquo;s chances of becoming the first team ever to win three Champions Trophy titles.

Iyer made merry during the home ODI World Cup a couple of years ago, scoring twin hundreds during the tournament, and even this time in Dubai, he hasn&rsquo;t let his guard down, delivering in almost every game for the Men in Blue. The right-handed batter has amassed 195 runs in four innings this time, with his handy knocks coming against Pakistan (group stage) and Australia in the crucial semis tie.
While against the arch-rivals, Iyer and Kohli stitched a 114-run stand for the third wicket, helping India complete the chase, they added 91 against the mighty Aussies in the semis, putting India in front to complete another win.&nbsp;
&ldquo;For me, the game-changer will be Shreyas Iyer. It is because of his recent form. This guy has had an excellent 2023 World Cup. He has batted well against New Zealand. He has played well at the Wankhede in Mumbai. And once again, in this tournament, he has looked crackerjack," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat'.
&ldquo;He has worked well on his short-ball game as well. Of course, he got out in the last game. But it shouldn&rsquo;t matter. I think this is Shreyas Iyer&rsquo;s biggest strength. He wants to get better at what he is not good at,&rdquo; Ashwin added.
<h2>How did it help Kohli?</h2>
Iyer&rsquo;s form (especially against the spin) strengthened India's chances to stay ahead in each game, as Kohli, who bats at number three, also benefitted from it. Ashwin explains how.

&ldquo;The way he (Iyer) plays, it helps Virat Kohli. There was a question with Gauti in the press conference. What was the conversation with Virat? Because he got out against a leg-spinner. Gauti gave an amazing answer. A guy has played 300 games. Obviously, he will get out. But apart from that, there is one thing: Virat Kohli is able to play the way he is playing because Shreyas Iyer is playing this way against spin."
&ldquo;So, the captains are in a catch-22 situation. There will be a partnership between Shreyas and Virat. When there is a partnership between Virat and Shreyas, the captains can&rsquo;t enforce a spin choke."&nbsp;
&ldquo;Shreyas is removing all the pressure from Virat. So, these two in the middle overs have forged a formidable pair. And for Virat&rsquo;s success, Shreyas Iyer has played a part in it. And for Shreyas&rsquo; success, Virat has a part in it. Because this is what people call playing in partnerships," Ashwin concluded.&nbsp;
