The Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) auction saw several records broken as teams splashed almost $76mn to add depth to their squad. The auctions held on Nov 24 and 25 were one of a kind with Rishabh Pant breaking the record for most expensive player in the history of the tournament with a price tag of INR 27mn ($3.2mn). However, another Indian player Vaibhav Suryavanshi is doing the rounds after he was bought by Rajasthan Royals for INR 11mn ($130,000).
Who is Rajasthan Royals' uncapped star Vaibhav Suryavanshi?
Hailing from Samsatipur, a small town in the Indian state of Bihar, Vaibhav is just 13 and will don the colours of former champions Rajasthan during IPL 2025. Vaibhav was born on 27 Mar 2011, days before India won the ODI World Cup under MS Dhoni’s leadership. A young prospect, he is regarded as one of the best players of the current generation. He represented Bihar in first-class cricket at 12, creating headlines way before he landed an IPL deal.
He scored a hundred against Australia U19 while representing India U19 in Chennai in September, prompting the scouting teams of several franchises to bid for him. His 104-run knock also saw him become the youngest player to score a hundred for India in youth cricket. The hundred against Australia also saw him break the record of current Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who scored a ton when he was 14 years and 241 days old.

While Vaibhav did the rounds for RR, the team coached by former India captain and coach Rahul Dravid also splashed cash on some big names. The franchise acquired the services of Jofra Archer for INR 125mn ($1.48mn) as he returned to the side in a second spell. Maheesh Theekshana ($520,000) and Wanindu Hasaranga ($623,000) were also the big names who joined the franchise. RR already have players like Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag as they look to end their 17-year drought to win the IPL title.
