Ind vs Ban: 'Rahul's temperamental problem...,' Manjrekar makes BIG remark after batter's flop show in Chennai

Sanjay Manjrekar's BIG remark on KL Rahul after his flop show in Chennai

Former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar highlighted 'temperamental problems' of KL Rahul after the latter's flop show on Day 1 of the first Test between India and Bangladesh, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Thursday (Sep 19). On his Test return, Rahul came out to bat at 96/4 and hardly looked at ease before falling for 16. Eventually, India rode on R Ashwin's 102* and Ravindra Jadeja's 86*to go to stumps at 339/6, after being asked to bat first at Chepauk.

Manjrekar, talking on ESPNCricinfo, pointed outthat Rahul has followed the same pattern throughout his career where he hardly looks comfortable in the middledespite having scored runs in the last outing.

Manjrekar said, "This has been the KL Rahul story. It’s amazing that he plays a brilliant innings at the Test level and the next two three innings it seems like he has got a pair in the last Test. Even when you saw him bat today, it almost seemed an innings without purpose. That can happen, it happened to me in the second half of my career where everything was internal."

Manjrekar cited his own example and further opined, "I went in to bat just thinking about my technique and am I going to play the ball well, imagining a certain kind of delivery coming my way. And I’ve got to play instead of going to your instinct as a batter which I think all the other Indian batters practice that is about getting runs. Even if you’re defending looking for ones and twos."

In addition, Manjrekar feelsRahul’s struggles are solely due tohis weak temperament, which has hurt his career significantly. So far, heaverages just 34.08in 50 Tests.

'He’s got some brilliant hundreds but an average of 34'

The cricketer-turned-commentator added, "That is more a temperamental problem for KL Rahul that has plagued him for 50 Test matches because the number that he has. He’s got some brilliant hundreds but an average of 34. He’s got hundreds, not one or two, quite a few and in testing conditions but the average of 34 tells you about his temperament and that we got to look at it today as well."

Rahul, who is now batting at No. 5 or 6 in Test cricket, scored a hundred versus South Africa in Centurion in Dec 2023 after more than two years. He started 2024 with a solid 86in the five-match Test series opener versus England, in Hyderabad, before a quadriceps strain pulled him out of the series.

Injuries or inconsistent run has been the story of Rahul's career, with the latter being mainly due to mindset issues.
