Chris Woakes reveals reason behind continued international absence, posts emotional text after father's death
England cricketer and fast bowler Chris Woakes has finally revealed the reason behind his continued absence from cricket after he posted an emotional message on his Instagram story. Woakes, who last played for England in December 2024 confirmed the death of his father at the start of May. The speedster has been an established member of the England squad but won’t travel to the West Indies and States for the T20 World Cup.
Woakes gets emotional on social media
“The last month has been the most challenging of my life when unfortunately my Dad passed away at the beginning of May,” he posted in a story on his Instagram account on Saturday.
“I’ve spent the last few weeks with the people most important to me, my family. We’re all obviously grieving and trying to get through what is undoubtedly the hardest moments in our lives,” he added.
With his father is suffering from health issues, Woakes took an extended break from England duties which also saw him miss the five-match Test series against India in January and February. He was due to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season but again opted to stay away from the competition to take care of his father’s health.

Woakes will now look to put behind his emotions and stand tall to make his England comeback as they will have a busy few months to come ahead of the Ashes.
England will have to do without his services during the T20 World Cup where they are the defending champions. The holders are in Group B and will face Australia in a high-profile match at the group stage. England’s bowling unit will be spearheaded by returning Jofra Archer in Woakes’ absence while Jos Buttler and Co will look to avoid the mistakes they made at the ODI World Cup in India in October and November last year.
