BGT 2024/25: Australia announce 13-man squad for Perth Test, name THIS player as David Warner's successor

Nathan McSweeney (L) and Sam Konstas

Australia have announced the squad for the first Border-Gavaskar Test against India starting November 22 in Perth. The Aussie have decided to go with Nathan McSweeney for the opening slot alongside Usman Khawaja, putting rumours of 'who's going to be David Warner's successor' to rest. Australia, however, have announced just a 13-man squad with Josh Inglis being called up as well.

McSweeney was preferred over Marcus Harris and Sam Konstas despite not being able to convert his two starts of 14 & 25 against India A in the second shadow Test. He was informed of the potential decision ahead of the second India A game by chief selector George Bailey.

"There's been a lot of talk about it, didn't really know until I finally got the word, still probably hasn't quite sunk in yet," he said. "Getting a lot of nice messages. Very lucky and grateful for the opportunity," McSweeney said.

"Nathan has displayed the attributes we believe will equip him well for Test cricket along with a strong recent record in domestic cricket," Chief Selector Bailey said. "His performances for South Australia and Australia A weighed in his favour and supports our view he is ready for the opportunity at Test level.

Bailey also offered an explanation on Inglis' selection and said,"Similarly, Josh has been in great touch in the Sheffield Shield competition and deserves his place in his first Test squad. Scott has been a top-level performer when given the opportunity at Test level and remains a valued member of the squad. The squad is balanced and provides Andrew and Pat the options required for what shapes as a captivating series."
