Ram emerged as the highest-ranked brand for quality overall, followed by Chevrolet and Hyundai. This is a significant improvement for Ford, which struggled in previous years' rankings. For premium brands, Porsche, Lexus, and Genesis secured the top three positions.

The study measures quality by problems reported per 100 vehicles (PP100) within the first three months of ownership. This year, the average industry score was 195 PP100, reflecting a slight decline from 2023.

GM Leads in Model-Level Awards

General Motors received the most model-level awards, with Chevrolet capturing six segment wins. Notably, the Chevrolet Silverado pickup and Tahoe large SUV both achieved top rankings. Hyundai and Toyota also secured four model-level awards each. The Lexus LC was ranked as the highest-quality model overall with a score of 106 PP100.

New Tech Creates Quality Woes

Interestingly, the study revealed that new vehicle technology is posing challenges for some automakers. Electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids exhibited more reported problems compared to gasoline-powered vehicles across all repair categories.

A significant source of frustration for owners stemmed from advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and infotainment features. False warnings from features like rear cross-traffic alerts and malfunctioning smartphone connectivity were commonly reported issues.

The complexity of features and controls, particularly in EVs, was another pain point for customers. The study also highlighted an increase in complaints regarding unpleasant interior smells emanating from heating and air conditioning systems.

The Road Ahead

The J.D. Power study highlights the need for automakers to prioritise user experience alongside technological advancements. Seamless integration of new features, improved system reliability, and clearer communication regarding functionalities are crucial for enhancing customer satisfaction. As EVs continue to gain traction, addressing these issues will be essential for building trust and ensuring a smooth ride into the future of mobility.
