Hyundai issues major recall of 145,000 EVs in US market

Hyundai Motor has announced a significant recall affecting approximately 145,235 electrified vehicles in the United States, following safety concerns identified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall encompasses a range of premium electric and hybrid vehicles, including the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 electric vehicles, as well as luxury Genesis models such as the GV60, GV70, and G80 electrified variants from model years 2022 to 2025.

At the heart of the recall is a critical technical issue involving the integrated charging control units. NHTSA has identified a potential fault that could cause damage to these units, potentially preventing the 12-volt battery from charging properly. This malfunction presents a significant risk of complete drive power loss, raising serious safety concerns for vehicle owners.

Hyundai has responded proactively to the safety alert, committing to a comprehensive resolution strategy. Authorised dealers will conduct free inspections, replace necessary components, and update software on the affected parts and associated fuses.

The recall underscores the ongoing challenges facing manufacturers in the rapidly evolving electric and hybrid vehicle market. As automotive technology becomes increasingly complex, ensuring consistent safety and reliability remains a paramount concern for manufacturers and regulatory bodies alike.

Vehicle owners are advised to contact their local Hyundai or Genesis dealerships to determine whether their specific vehicle is impacted by this recall. The company has emphasised its commitment to customer safety and urged affected owners to schedule immediate inspections.
