The US is set to impose harsh sanctions on Iran
Secretary of state Mike Pompeo said today that the US will impose "strongest sanctions in history" on Iran, asserting that "Iran will never again have carte blanche to dominate the Middle East."
In a strongly worded statement, Pompeo said: "We will apply unprecedented financial pressure on the Iranian regime. The leaders in Tehran will have no doubt about our seriousness."
President Donald Trump had announced on May 8 that he would pull the United States out of the Iran nuclear deal.
The US administration had said it would impose sanctions after the expiry of 90- and 180-day wind-down periods, including sanctions aimed at Iran's oil and financial sectors.
"European firms doing 'prohibited business' with Iran will be held 'to account', Pompeo added.
Pompeo added that the US will put down "12 condictions" for "any new deal" with Rohani's Iran.
