Israeli strikes hit south Beirut Saturday night into Sunday, some of them "very violent," the news agency AFP reported citing state media. The report said that Israeli military aircraftcarried out four very violent strikes on (Beirut's) southern suburbs, and one strike on the Chweifatarea, with ambulances rushing to the site.

Explosions were heardin south Beirut and its outskirts for more than two hours after the state media's announcement of Israeli strikes, AFP reported.In one south Beirut location, a ball of flame rose into the air while flares shot up amid thick smoke for about an hour.

Dozens of people flee as explosions echo in background

As per reports, dozens of people in the Sabra area, close to Beirut's southern suburbs, were seen carrying bags and fleeing on foot or motorbikes as explosions echoed in the background.

State media reported thatair traffic at Lebanon's only airport in Beirut, close to the targeted areas, was "ongoing despite the Israeli enemy's aggression on the southern suburbs. Several Middle East Airlines planes have just landed."

Meanwhile, the Israeli military said that it was striking terror targets belonging to Hezbollah in Beirut.

Israel announces new call for residents to evacuate from southern Beirut suburbs

On Saturday night, the Israeli militaryannounced a new call for residents to evacuate from Beirut's southern suburbs, as it continued to target Hezbollah positions in the Lebanese capital.

"For your safety and that of your family members, you must immediately evacuate the designated buildings and those adjacent to them and move away from them at least 500 meters," said spokesperson Avichay Adraee on social media, alongside satellite images highlighting areas in the Burj el-Barajneh, Haret Hreik and Chweifat al-Amrussiya neighbourhoods.

Hezbollah and Israel have been exchanging near-daily cross-border fire for almost a year, with the group saying it is acting in support of Palestinian ally Hamas over the Gaza war.

Before the recent upsurge, exchanges of fire between Israel andHezbollahhad been mostly limited to the Israel-Lebanon border area.

Israeli military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said on Saturday that Israel had killed 440Hezbollahfighters in its ground operations in southern Lebanon and destroyed 2,000Hezbollahtargets.

However, the Israeli assault has killed hundreds ofordinary Lebanese and forced 1.2 million people to flee.
