West Asia crisis: India's Jaishankar holds talks with Iranian, Israeli counterparts amidst heightened tensions

India'sForeign Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday (Apr 14) talked to his Iranian and Israeli counterparts in the wake of the heightened tensions between the two nations.
Jaishankar held discussions with Iranian FM Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and stressed the "the importance of avoiding escalation." The top Indian diplomat also held discussions regarding the situation involving 17 Indian nationals aboard a ship seized off the coast of the UAE.
The container ship, MSC Aries, was seized near the Strait of Hormuz by Iran's RevolutionaryGuards on Saturday (Apr 13). This has raised concerns about the safety of the Indian crew aboard the vessel.
S Jaishankar in a post on X said, "Spoke to Iranian FM@Amirabdolahianthis evening. Took up the release of 17 Indian crew members of MSC Aries."
The two ministers also held discussions regarding the ongoing crisis in West Asia against the backdrop of Iran-Israel tensions.

"Discussed the current situation in the region. Stressed the importance of avoiding escalation, exercising restraint and returning to diplomacy. Agreed to remain in touch," the Indian minister wrote on X.
Additionally, Jaishankar also talked to his Israeli counterpartIsrael Katz and "shared his concerns."
In another post on X, Jaishankar wrote, "Just concluded a conversation with Israel FMIsrael Katz.Shared our concern at the developments yesterday.Discussed the larger regional situation. Agreed to stay in touch."
Earlier, the Indian minister on Sunday called the escalation in West Asia a "matter of deep concern". The statement came after Iran fired a barrage of missiles and drones towards Israel, causing damage to an airbase.
While talking to local media, S Jaishankar said, "It is a matter of deep concern because it represents an escalation in this situation, something which worries all of us."
"We have for some time been concerned about the situation there starting with the October 7 attack on Israel, escalating into other dimensions and other zones which is deeply worrying. We have particular stakes in that region," he added.
India is constantly monitoring the situation in the region and has advised its citizens to exercise caution.
