Video: Before and after drone footage shows destruction of Gaza more than six months into Israel-Hamas war

A drone footage of Gaza shows the scale of destruction in the Palestinian enclave since the beginning of the war between Israel and the militant group Hamas. The video shows how the once lively and vibrant Gaza has turned into a wasteland of rubble and twisted steel after more than six months of Israeli bombardment.

Before the war, Palestinians in Gaza would be able to stand on the balconies of their buildings and view the Mediterranean Sea.

However, the footage by news agency Reuters and other sources, shows how those buildings and structures have now turned into rubble. It also shows the days when, one of the most densely populated areas on Earth, would look like any other city.

The war began on October 7 after the Palestinian militant group, Hamas, launched attacks in southern Israel, killed 1,200 people and dragged more than 200 hostages back to Gaza, according to Israel officials.

Israel has since responded with near-constant bombardment and a ground operation in Gaza, killing at least 33,360 people and leaving 75,993 others injured, according to the recent update by the Hamas-run health ministry, on Tuesday (Apr 9).

No end in sight

The ongoing war crossed the six-month mark on April 7, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeating his stance saying that Israel’s military offensive will not stop until Hamas is eliminated.

Meanwhile, over the past few months, ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas amid the ongoing war have largely stalled. The recent round of negotiations reportedly began over the weekend in the Egyptian capital city of Cairo.

At the end of the weekend, the Palestinian militant group was presented with a new proposal for ceasefire talks but it appears that it would not lead to a deal.

Hamas has confirmed that it is reviewing the latest proposal but said Israel “has not responded to any of the demands of our people and our resistance”.

Meanwhile, Israel has rejected Palestinian demands to allow hundreds of thousands of Gazans back to the enclave’s north. The Hamas proposal also includes the complete withdrawal of Israeli military ground forces from the strip.
