French president Emmanuel Macron condemns Syria 'chemical attacks'

France president Emmanuel Macron has condemned the use of chemical weapons against civilians in a rebel-held Syrian town, Douma.

According to Elysee Palace, Macron was on a call with US president Donald Trump when he discussed the attack with him.

The official statement from the French presidency said, "strongly condemned the chemical attacks on April 7 against the population of Douma".

News agency AFP reported that the two leaders exchanged information allegedly confirming the use of chemical weapons and would coordinate their efforts at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council in New York on Monday.

Dozens of people were killed in the chemical attack carried out on the rebel-held town in eastern Ghouta.

In earlier reports rebel groups of Syria accused Damascus of carrying out the attack however, Syrian state media denied such reports saying that eastern Ghouta of Douma is in a state of collapse and spreading false news.

Following the attack, nine UN Security Council members urged to have an emergency meeting to discuss reports about the chemical gas attack.

US State Department is also monitoring the situation closely.
