The new “Star Wars” film failed to impress its fans as the first weekend since the release was lacklustre in the domestic and worldwide box office. Such poor performance for the latest film “Solo: A Star Wars Story” brought down the average sale recorded for every “Star Wars” film from the franchise, especially in the United States and Canada -- two major markets for the epic-fantasy sci-fi movies.
“Solo” recorded an $83.3 million collection in the United States and Canada during the first three days of the US Memorial Day weekend, Disney/ComScore Inc. estimated in an email.
As the film failed to pick up, Disney slashed its estimates for the film’s debut weekend from $150 million to $105 million to $115 million through Monday’s holiday total.
The film failed to sizzle even though it faced no new competition, however, “Deadpool 2” and “Avengers: Infinity War” continued to rake in good numbers.
In “Solo: A Star Wars Story” Alden Ehrenreich stars as a young Han Solo, the iconic “Star Wars” pilot and smuggler played by Harrison Ford. On a mission to rescue his first love, he teams up with Lando Calrissian, played by Donald Glover and finds the Millennium Falcon spaceship and a band of space outlaws. The film also reveals how Solo meets his furry co-pilot, Chewbacca.
Next film from the franchise will come out in December 2019 -- final episode of Disney’s “Star Wars” trilogy. To keep the “Star Wars” story going after that, Disney has commissioned another trilogy from Rian Johnson, director of “The Last Jedi.”
