Trump, speaking at a Fox News interview said Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado is visiting Washington.
Just days after the United States attacked Venezuela and captured its ex-president Nicolas Maduro and her wife, Trump indicated on Thursday that Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado is visiting Washington. The visit is expected anytime next week. Trump spoke about the likely visit of Machado in a Fox News interview.
When asked by the anchor as to whether he plans to meet the Venezuelan Opposition leader after the attack and capture of Maduro, Trump said, "Well, I understand she's coming in next week sometime, and I look forward to saying hello to her," as reported by Reuters.
The news agency reached out to the White House for more details on it, but was not able to gather much information.
It will be the first meeting between the two leaders after Machado said she hadn't spoken to the US President after winning the Nobel Peace Prize in October.
Notably, trump has rejected the idea of Machado playin an active role after the capture of Maduro. Speaking in the Fox News interview, he said "she doesn't have the support within or the respect within the country."
"We have to rebuild the country. They couldn't have an election," he further said and added, "They wouldn't even know how to have an election right now."
