
McDonald's in Australia has temporarily shortened their breakfast hours by 90 minutes due to an egg shortage owing to a bird flu outbreak.
The popular fast-food joint is serving breakfast only till 10:30 am compared to its usual timings of serving till midday. Due to an egg shortage, the outlet has reduced their breakfast hours. People who enjoy a late breakfast of an egg sausage muffin and coffee at McDonald's will have to get up early to avail breakfast at the outlet.
"Like many retailers, we are carefully managing supply of eggs due to the current industry challenges. We’re continuing to work closely with our network of Aussie farmers, producers, and suppliers, as the industry comes together to manage this challenge." McDonald's Australia told the BBC.
In the last two months, several cases of bird flu have been reported in 11 poultry facilities across Australia. Till now, no cases of the H5N1 variant have been detected in the state. The H5N1 spreads through birds and mammals and affects billions of animals worldwide while impacting a small proportion of humans as well.

The Australian authorities have reassured the public that the situation is under control. They said that consumers might find a few shelves empty, however, the situation is being managed and egg supplies are being re-directed to areas that have been affected.
Bird flu outbreak in Australia has affected less than 10% of egg-laying hens. However, to ensure smooth functioning in a time of crisis a few businesses have imposed restrictions on the number of eggs an individual can purchase.
