<p>Needing to chase 158 runs, UP made a good start to the chase as they countered the RCB bowling attack. The Warriorz were 126/3 in the 16th over and needed 32 runs to win with four overs remaining in the match. However, it was Sobhana’s match-winning spell that turned the game on its head and in favour of RCB as she scalped five wickets.</p>

<p>Grace Harris (38) and Shweta Sehrawat (31) stitched a 71-run stand for the fourth wicket and almost got their team home before the late collapse. RCB used seven bowlers during the innings with Georgia Wareham and Sophie Molineux also getting a wicket each.</p>

<h2><strong>Mumbai Indians win thriller</strong></h2>

<p>DC struck early with Marizanne Kapp removing dangerous Hayley Matthews for a two-ball duck. Mumbai Indians didn't let their heads drop with Yastika Bhatia taking the onus of scoring runs. MI finished the powerplay with a score of 50/1 but DC bounced back immediately with Arundhati Reddy dismissing Nat Sciver-Brunt (19) before her innings could take flight.</p>

<p>Yastika stitched up a crucial 56-run stand with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur to steady MI's sinking ship. Yastika (57) raised her bat after completing her half-century but lost her wicket moments after as Reddy struck once again to bag her second wicket of the night. Harmanpreet and Amelia Kerr added 44 runs to the board but Shikha Pandey used her experience to break the partnership.</p>

<p>She breached Kerr's defence to end her time on the crease for a score of 24. With two overs left, MI needed 22 runs to get across the finishing line. On the final ball of the second last over, Harmanpreet sent the ball flying into the stands to complete her fifty and bring the equation down to 12 runs in 6 balls. Skipper Meg Lanning handed the ball to Alice Capsey to see off the game for DC. She struck on the first ball and claimed Pooja Vastrakar's wicket.</p>

<p>Amanjot Kaur rotated the strike to bring Harmanpreet back on the strike. With fire in her eyes and ice in her veins, Harmanpreet picked up a boundary to bring down the equation to 5 runs in 2 balls.</p>

<p>Capsey had the last laugh by stealing Harmanpreet's moment of glory and ended her stay on the crease for 55 (34). With six needed to win the game, Sajana on her first delivery of the night, struck the ball sweetly with sheer power to win the game for MI.</p>

<p>"Even last year our focus was to create a good system, good routines and follow it. And it's no different this time around. These were the very things that gave us the kind of results it did last year," the 34-year-old said on the eve of the WPL opener.</p>

<p>"Like last year, we weren't expecting too much from ourselves or trying to do too many things. We just want to keep it very simple like last time. Be relaxed, be in the moment and keep doing the right things,” Lanning added.</p>

<p>“We just want to do what we did last year, keep things simple and enjoy our cricket. We hope to give all the players clear roles so that they can go out there and perform. I know a lot of eyeballs will be on us this time since we won last year, but last year as well, we didn’t put any pressure on ourselves,” she said.</p>

<p>Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals kick off the second season of the WPL on February 23 in a replay of the 2023 final. The first leg of the tournament is to be played in Bengaluru, followed by the second leg and the playoffs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.</p>

<p>BCCI secretary Jay Shah has zeroed in on the dates and venue for the second season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the WPL 2024 auction held in Mumbai on Saturday, Shah revealed the tournament will take place in the ‘second or third week of February’ next year in just ‘one state’.</p>

<p>Without getting into further details on what exact state he is referring to, Shah mentioned how managing logistics in such tournaments is some deal and how they plan to host WPL pan India in times to come.</p>

<p>"It is decided that we will have the tournament in February," Shah told journalists in Mumbai. "Most probably we will start in the second or third week."</p>

<p>"As far as the venue is concerned, it will be held in one state only so that it is better logistically. Logistics are very important for us this time; next time we can figure it [having more venues] out,” the BCCI secretary added.</p>

We have so many venues, even in Gujarat, where we have Ahmedabad and Rajkot, and after a few years, Baroda can build their own stadium. Basically, it is a joint call between the franchises and the BCCI. We will sit together, and we will decide. We will let you know. It will be in one state, that is for sure,” Shah added.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the inaugural season of the WPL took place at two venues in Mumbai - the Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Sports Academy. It remains to be seen which state will get the hosting rights this time.</p>

<p>RCB women’s team captain and Indian women's cricket team vice-captain Smriti Mandhana shared her perspective&nbsp;on the potential impact of a multi-city format for the Women's Premier League (WPL) while speaking at the RCB Innovation Lab’s Leaders Meet India in Bengaluru last week. While reflecting on the success of the WPL, Smriti Mandhana expressed enthusiasm for the prospect of adopting a multi-city format at the first-of-its-kind summit that brought together influential leaders from various industries to delve into the future of sports.</p>

<p>"It would be great to have WPL in the multi-city format. I think that might be the next step and I am sure the people right here would look into it and make it happen. As an RCB fan, I would love to play in Chinnaswamy where people are chanting ‘RCB RCB’ and just to be in that environment. That is something which is one step ahead for us that it (multi-city format) can reach to places where women's cricket hasn't reached and to get new audience going into women's cricket,” Mandhana commented.</p>

<p>The 27-year-old believes that the RCB Innovation Lab’s Leaders Meet India was a much-needed platform to understand how different business people look at sports as a platform to generate digital numbers and feels the event should happen more often to interact with other sports icons and business top brass.<br />

Ahead of the WPL auction and the second season of the tournament, RCB&nbsp;captain Mandhana revealed the importance of a conducive environment that the franchise has prepared and she will prioritise the time she spends with the team. “A lot of thoughts have gone into what kind of combinations we need in terms of releases or retention. So we are looking forward to the WPL auctions and hopefully, we get the players who we are looking forward to getting,” added Mandhana.</p>

She emphasised the cultural shift, saying, “Women in India are doing amazing stuff in the last five to 10 years not only in women's cricket but in women's sport in general. If you see the last Olympics or Commonwealth or Asian Games, the kind of medals women's athletes have gone and got for the country is a big inspiration for a lot of smaller city girls out there to pursue their passion. I think women's sports in general should be treated separately and by doing that they can definitely sell a lot of things in terms of the ticketing or the digital rights.”</p>

<p>When asked about the areas women’s cricket needs in terms of further investment or further focus to keep propelling forward, Mandhana suggested focusing on the grassroots level. “The only thing that we could invest in is the grassroots level of women's sport in general because a lot of interest is developed with the Indian Women's team or the WPL tournament. Invest more so that we get a lot more cricketers women cricketers,” she remarked.</p>

<p>Drawing inspiration from women athletes in international sports, Mandhana revealed her admiration for Alex Morgan in women's FIFA and acknowledged Serena Williams' monumental achievements in tennis as her source of motivation.</p>

<h2><strong>Auctions on December 9</strong></h2>

<p>With the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the spotlight, the BCCI on Saturday (Dec 2) announced dates for the auctions. Franchises announced their retention list recently after which a lot of the latest players were registered for the auctions. 60 players were retained by the six franchises including 21 from the overseas contingent. The auctions will see 104 Indian players part of the auctions while 61 overseas players have registered their names.</p>

<p>On November 24 the WPL commission set December 9 as the auction date with players going under the hammer. The registration for the auctions took place until December 1 with players from different parts of the world enrolling their name.</p>

<p>Dottin will be the star attraction during the auctions as she comes with a pedigree on the international stage with the West Indies. Interestingly, she withdrew from the 2023 WPL edition and opted not to be registered for Gujarat Giants. She was purchased for Rs 60 lakh during the first auction and was consequently replaced by Kim Garth. However, the Australian was also let go by the franchise during the off-season.</p>

<p>Gujarat Giants will have the biggest purse with Rs 5.95 crore in their purse while defending champions Mumbai Indians have Rs 2.10 crore to spend as they occupy the lowest sum in the auctions. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The dates for the latest WPL season are yet to be finalised with all the five teams looking to bolster their squad. The next season could likely begin in the first week of March while few reports are also suggesting that BCCI plans to start the WPL in late February.</p>

<p>Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have roped in Mo Bobat as their new director of cricket. The 40-year-old is currently with England Cricket Board as their Men's team performance director. Bobat has been associated with the ECB since last 12 years and has a good relationship with new RCB coach Andy Flower from their overlapping time with England.</p>

<p>During Bobat's tenure at performance director, England won both 50-over and 20-over World Cup titles while seeing a change of fortune in Tests with Brendon McCullum as coach and Ben Stokes as the skipper. Bobat joined the ECB at 2011, looking after Under-19 program initially before being named as the board's first Player Identification Lead in 2016.</p>

<p>Post the session, Jhulan Goswami said, “It was a lot of fun. They are so intelligent. They know what to do. When I asked certain questions, they gave spontaneous responses. I was really impressed. When I was young, I was not that prompt. They understand their games really well and it is a credit to their respective coaches back home. It is creditable that Mumbai Indians are taking such initiatives for young boys and girls.”</p>

<p>John Wright remembered his time as India coach and spoke about how it is vital for youngsters to get opportunities like MI Junior in age group cricket. “It is really important that everyone gets the opportunity to play games of cricket in an organized way. A lot of the boys that I coached came through very hard pathways. Some of them had to fight very hard to just get a game of cricket. It is vital that youngsters get to play as much as possible.”</p>

<p>It took him back to his time as a schoolboy cricketer in New Zealand. “I have always enjoyed and valued working with young cricketers of all ages. We have all experienced that while growing up. It was a long time ago but you still have memories as a 12 or 14-year-old that loved the game. At that age, you play whenever and wherever you can and have dreams of representing your country. In this age, they also dream of playing the IPL. It was great to see their shining eyes and bright smiles. We just encouraged children to have big dreams, enjoy themselves and have fun.”</p>

<p>The talent on show impressed both Wright and Goswami who have seen the ups and downs in the game for decades.</p>

<p>“It was very enjoyable. The kids were very enthusiastic. There were various skill levels. Some of them were of a very high standard. We tried to make it enjoyable for them. They were very enthusiastic and we emphasized a lot on the fielding. It is fielding that brings a team together,” Wright said.</p>

<p>The kids underwent a set of various training and fielding drills while also getting to ask their questions and interact with the two respected coaches. The girls began first, and then followed by the two boys teams.</p>

<p>The third edition of MI Junior was played across iconic grounds in Mumbai, Pune &amp; Nagpur and had participation of over 400 teams with close to 3500 boys and girls participating across three age groups of Boys U-14, Girls U-15 and Boys U-16. Notably, the tournament had about 16 women scorers who were accredited with the cricket associations, officiating across the matches in Mumbai, apart from that around 63 female physio’s were on the ground to look after the players and guide them through the injuries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is mulling the possibility of staging the Women’s Premier League (WPL) during a winter window as they try to engage more audience. The inaugural edition that was played in Mumbai in 2023 could be further expanded to a home-away format in the future according to Joint Secretary Jay Shah. The idea to move the WPL to the winter window could see the premier competition take place during the Hindu festival of Diwali.</p>

<p>"We are mulling the possibility of scheduling the WPL, in the home and away format, in the Diwali window; not two seasons in a year but just a different time window," Shah said during an interaction with mediapersons.</p>

<p>"Women's cricket now has a dedicated audience base and this number will only keep growing as we expect an encouraging turnout at the next WPL,” Shah further added.</p>

<p>The inaugural edition of the WPL was a huge success after Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals in the final in March. Harmanpreet Kaur’s army beat Delhi in a one-sided contest with all matches taking place in Mumbai at the Brabourne Stadium and the DY Patil Stadium.</p>

<p>"The BCCI Media Rights tender will be on schedule this year (June-July) and will depend on the Afghanistan tour, but more likely, the process will start from the Australia series. The Board will speak to all stakeholders concerned and will come up with an interim decision," BCCI secretary Shah said on Friday.</p>

<p>The WPL season one was a huge hit with five teams participating the inaugural edition of the tournament. The BCCI is also planning to expand the tournament as it tries to carry out a revolution in Women’s games, but that won’t happen until the 2026 edition. BCCI earned a whopping close to Rs 4700 crore for team rights and Rs 951 crore for media rights for WPL.</p>

<p>"It has been a phenomenal ride so far and quite a challenging one given the time slot we had to start the WPL. We are satisfied with the way things have progressed, we did not have much of a window as the World Cup was there and the girls had just about a week to come back and start.</p>

<p>Chasing 183, UP got off to the worse possible start as Shweta Sehrawat (1) and Alyssa Healy (11) were dismissed early while in-form Tahlia McGrath (7) also failed to make an impression. The Warriorz were struggling 21/3 after the fifth over and could not recover against a resolute Mumbai side. Kiran Navgire was the lone warrior in the side as she scored 43 runs off 27 deliveries, which consisted of 4 fours and 3 sixes.</p>
