WPL 2025: 'Brilliant to watch': Skipper Mandhana praises Kanika, Richa for RCB's thrilling win

A half-century by Ellyse Perry and audacious ball-striking in death overs by half-centurion Richa Ghosh and Kanika Ahuja helped defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) kickstart their Women's Premier League (WPL) campaign with a massive six-wicket win in Vadodara on Friday.
Reduced to 14/2, the RCB's 'Play Bold' philosophy drove the run-chase despite all odds, as a recovery partnership by Perry and Raghvi Bisht paved way for what seemed like endless punishment for GG bowlers towards the end.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the toss and elected to field first. After being put to bat first, GG opening pair of Beth Mooney and Laura Wolvaardt took their time in picking up speed, with Mooney hitting some boundaries. However, Laura was cleaned up by Renuka Thakur for 6 (10 balls, with one fours) by Renuka Singh.
GG ended the first six overs of the innings, the powerplay phase at 39/1, with Mooney (24*) joined by Dayalan Hemalatha (2*). Kanika Ahuja gave another wicket to RCB, removing Hemalatha for four off nine balls, with a fine catch from Prerna Rawat.
GG were 68/2 at the end of 10 overs, with Mooney (50*) joined by skipper Ashleigh Gardner (2*). Mooney's fifty came in 37 balls, with seven fours, continuing her consistent T20 run, marking her fifth fifty in last eight innings. The 44-run stand was once again broken, this time by Prerna.
Mooney was the one to go after being caught by RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana for 56 in 42 balls, with eight fours.
After the arrival of Deandra Dottin at the crease, run-rate went up as Dottin smashed Kim Garth for two fours while Gardner launched Prerna's deliveries into skies for three successive sixes. GG brought up their 100-run mark in 13.2 overs.
Gardner continued to attack, picking three fours against her Aussie teammate Georgia Wareham and a four and six against Joshitha VJ to bring up her fifty in 25 balls in her first outing as captain. In the 17th over, Renuka brought down the run rate a bit, removing Dottin for a 13-ball 25 (three fours and a six).
With this, a 67-run fourth wicket stand was over. GG was 152/4 in 16.5 overs. In the next over, Gardner picked up three sixes against Joshitha. It was followed by another run-fest of an over, which produced 20 runs and a wicket of Simran Sheikh (11 in five balls).
After Garth conceeded two fours on the final two balls of the innings, GG ended with 201/5, with Harleen Deol (9*) and Gardner (79* in 37 balls, with three fours and eight sixes). Renuka was the pick of the bowlers, conceding just 25 runs and getting two wickets. Kanika, Wareham and Prerna got one wicket each.
During the run-chase of 202, RCB openers Mandhana and Danni Wyatt-Hodge started with three fours in the first over, but Gardner pushed them back by removing both the openers in the next over. RCB was 14/2 in two overs. Following these two breakthroughs, Raghvi Bist was joined by Australia legend Ellyse Perry.
Bisht and Perry showed fine attacking intent, with a six by Perry bringing up RCB's 50 runs in 5.5 overs. At the end of six overs, RCB was at 51/2, with Perry (17*) and Bisht (16*) unbeaten. As the innings went on, Perry continued to pile on boundaries and GG bowlers added to the run tally with some extras. At the end of 10 overs, RCB was 89/2, with Perry (42*) and Bisht (24*) unbeaten.
In the 11th over, Perry slammed two successive sixes against Dottin to bring up her fifth WPL fifty in 27 balls, with five fours and two sixes. 100-runs were up for RCB in 10.5 overs and chances of a win looked promising.
Then, Dottin removed Bisht (25 in 27 balls, with three fours) and Perry, with latter being caught at long-on ,, for 57 in 34 balls, with six fours and two sixes. RCB slipped to 109/4 in 12.2 overs. Richa Ghosh and Kanika carried on with the chase audaciously.
In the 16th over, Ghosh launched an assault on Gardner, smashing her for four boundaries and a six, bringing down the equation to 40 in final four overs. Thanks to three more fours in the next over, the equation went down to 24 runs in final three overs.
The punishment continued for GG as Priya Mishra was taken down for 18 runs in the 18th over, with Ghosh reaching her fifty in 23 balls, with seven fours and two sixes, smashing Priya for a six and two fours. From brainstorming the kind of dressing room culture they wanted to create, to having a dedicated communication group for the Indian domestic players in the off-season, RCB left no stone unturned in this labour of love that eventually led them to ultimate glory on Sunday.

It was a night of multiple triumphs for RCB. The players showcased their peak performance in the pivotal tournament finale, adeptly seizing opportunities with the ball to limit the opponent to a modest total of 113 and then they demonstrated prowess with the bat, efficiently chasing the target with only two wickets down.

In addition to winning the Fair Play award, RCB also swept the individual awards in a historic first in the WPL, taking the Orange Cap for most runs 347 (Ellyse Perry), Purple Cap for most wickets 13 and Emerging Player of the Tournament (both Shreyanka Patil).

The day after RCB lifted the WPL trophy, captain Smriti spoke about the painstaking preparations that had gone into turning the dream into reality. “The first thing, they were like, this is your team and build it the way you want to do it and set the culture. That was the biggest thing for me. And the second thing was that we really want to set a good culture in terms of, happy and positive stuff. So that was a big thing in terms of planning, how we want the team environment to be,” Smriti said.

“Then the second bit of planning, where we started chalking down names, started tracking players, like Sophie Molineux was injured last year. So we had to track her, whether she's doing fine, what's happening. (Coach) Luke (Williams) being from Australia really helped."

Talking about the importance of the numerous training camps organised by RCB over the past year, Smriti said, “One very good thing RCB did was they conducted several camps last year. Training camps, fitness camps, batting and bowling-specific camps, that was also part of our planning. Our plan was to give a platform to domestic cricketers so that they were completely ready for this level."

She added, “Over the past one year we did a lot of video calls together. We had a group of our own Indian domestic girls and whenever they needed something we were all always there."

“So if you are working for a year, your job becomes easier when the season arrives. Once the season starts, it becomes a bit hard to put in that kind of work. So RCB worked on them for a year, and that really paid off a lot in terms of how they were confident,” concluded Smriti.

Royal Challengers Bangalore - Women returned to winning ways on Monday (Mar 4) after UP Warriorz failed to chase down a daunting target of 199 in front of a packed M. Chinnaswamy crowd. RCB emerged victorious by 23 runs and climbed to third spot on the points table.&nbsp;

Riding on Perry's 37-ball 58-run innings, RCB managed to put a record 198-run total on board after openers Sabbhineni Meghana and captain Smriti Mandhana shared a 50-run stand.

Mandhana was at her very best during the innings as she smashed 80 runs off only 50 balls, carting Warriorz bowlers for fun. She was given a reprieve early in the innings and made full use of it.&nbsp;

RCB had a great platform set but even so, the Warriorz&nbsp;were let down by the bowling effort in the last five overs where they conceded nearly 70 runs.&nbsp;

During the chase,&nbsp;Warriorz largely remained on track before losing their way in the last bit. The opening pair of Alyssa Healey and Kiran Navgire came out of the blocks in fine fashion but the latter returned to the pavilion in the fifth over with the scoreboard reading 47.&nbsp;

Chamari Athapaththu attempted to up the ante but she was adjudged LBW by the DRS in rather controversial circumstances. The ball by Wareham was a leg spin that struck&nbsp; Athapaththu's front pad but the Hawkeye showed it was a 'doosra' and that it was turning into the batter.&nbsp;

Athapaththu's dismissal turned out to be the turning point in the game and despite Healey's rearguard action, Warriorz never managed to keep up with the chase. Deepti Sharma and Poonam Khemnar did hit some lusty blows at the back end but it proved too little, too late.

Speaking after the match, Mandhana reflected that pressure was on her team, having lost two games on the bounce but her side responded well.&nbsp;

"We were under the pump after the last two games and we knew we had to get going today. Losing the toss didn’t help but there was a clear message to show intent straightaway. Everyone batted really well including Meghana at the top and then the bowlers came out and did their job," said Mandhana who was also adjudged the Player of the Match.&nbsp;

Chasing a modest 132, Mumbai openers Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Mathews made small work of the chase, adding 45 runs in just four overs and setting the tone. All the Mumbai batters kept the tempo up and the team eventually won the match in 16 overs. Apart from Bhatia (31 off 15 balls), Mathews scored 26 off 21, Nat Sciver-Brunt contributed 27 and Amelia Kerr chipped in with unbeaten 40 off 24 balls. RCB were never in the contention despite sending back Bhatia inside the powerplay and Mathews shortly after on a team score of 69. Kerr then added the remaining runs with Pooja Vastrakar to take the team home. Earlier, MI won the toss and sent RCB to bat first. Mumbai, led by Sciver-Brunt in absence of Hamranpreet Kaur, struck early and brought RCB down at 33/3 inside the powerplay. Bangalore could never recover from the situation even with Wareham and Ellyse Perry's 52-run partnership for the sixth wicket. For RCB, Perry top scored with unbeaten 44 while Wareham chipped in with 27 off 20 balls. Speaking to the broadcasters after the match, RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana said: "Batting first, we have seen it is holding a little bit. We could not adjust to the pitch. We went in with the same flow. Something to learn from, hopefully we come back very soon. In terms of bowling, we need to bowl at the stumps a lot more. We have to bring the stumps in play - that is what we did in the first two games." RCB next play on March 4 (Monday) against UP Warriorz.

<h2>Harris leads the charge(UPW vs GG)</h2>

Needing 143 runs to win in 20 overs, the Warriorz made a good start to their innings with openers Kiran Navgire (12) and Alyssa Healy (33) putting a 42-run stand. Chamari Athapaththu, on debut, then scored 17 runs to help her side to a comfortable position before Harris took the initiative. She scored an unbeaten 60-run knock which included 9 fours and 2 sixes and was given a good helping hand by Shweta Sehrawat (unbeaten 17) as they marched their way to victory.

Tanuja Kanwar bagged two while Kathryn Bryce and Meghna Singh both ended with one wicket each for the Giants.

Earlier, the Warriorz restricted Giants to 142 runs with Sophie Ecclestone leading from the front with the ball. She ended with figures of 20/3 in her four overs. Rajeshwari Gayakwad bagged the other wicket as the GG never got going with the bat. Phoebe Litchfield was the top scorer with 35 while South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt scored 28 along with Ashleigh Gardner’s 30-run knock.

With the win, the Warriorz are now third in the WPL 2024 standings as they have four points from as many games. The top four are only separated by Net Run Rate (NRR) while Gujarat Giants are bottom with no wins in their three matches. They will need to start winning before other teams take a&nbsp;big margin lead.
