"We want somebody who can bat at that spot. Axar being Axar, he had a good run this year, and batted well in white-ball cricket, especially. He did not get a lot of opportunities in red-ball but he batted well in white-ball cricket, especially in the IPL. The 36-year-old Indian skipper further added, "We thought about off-spinners as well, Ashwin and Washi as well but right now, Chahal has to miss out because we can only get 17 players there. The only way we could have done that (brought him in) is by taking one of the seamers out. We cannot really do that because seamers are going to play a big role in the next 2 months, considering the number of games in the next two months. Some of them are coming back after a long time. We wanted to get them in and see what they can do."

Chahal has been behind in the pecking order in the 50-over format. His last ODI came versus New Zealand during the home series early this year. He wasn't part of the playing XI in the following home series versus Australia and even missed out during the Windies tour. The veteran will still be hopeful for a miraculous turnaround before the ODI World Cup squad is announced.&nbsp;

Chahal has so far claimed 121 wickets in 72 ODIs and was part of India's run in the 2019 ODI World Cup, where they bowed out in the semi-finals.&nbsp;

Senior opener KL Rahul has been left out of the India squad which will travel to Zimbabwe for an ODI series next month after aggravating his hamstring injury, a development which could potentially jeopardise his T20 World Cup chances.

It is understood that Rahul hasn’t yet recovered despite undergoing a successful sports hernia surgery for lower abdominal injury. His hamstring also remains sore. India will play 3 ODIs in Zimbabwe on August 18, 20 and 22.

“I wanted to clarify a couple of things about my health and fitness. My surgery in June was successful and I had begun my training with hope of returning to national duty for the tour of West Indies. Unfortunately as I was returning to full fitness, I tested positive for Covid-19,” he tweeted.

He expressed hope of coming back for Asia Cup in UAE. “This naturally pushes things back by a couple of weeks but I aim to recover as quickly as possible and be available for selection as quickly as I can,” he further wrote. 
 
“To represent the country is highest honour and I cannot wait to get out there back in blue.”

Off-spinner Washington Sundar, who has made a stellar start to his English county career with Lancashire is back in the squad along with seamer Deepak Chahar after successful completion of his rehabilitation following hamstring and back injuries.

Chahar has not played competitive cricket for five months now and also missed the 2022 IPL season. “KL Rahul has recovered from Covid-19 but his hamstring injury seems to have resurfaced. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli, skipper Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya have all been rested from the tour as ODIs aren’t top priority for the side with less than three months left for the World T20.

“Virat had spoken to selectors that he would be available from the Asia Cup onwards. The first team players will hardly get rest from Asia Cup till end of World T20. Hence this is a two-week window after Windies tour when they can rest,” the source said.

Sundar, who had joined RCB in 2018, spent four seasons with the franchise before being released last year. He was later picked by SRH in the auction. Having spent four years at RCB, the franchise probably holds a special place in Sundar's heart. Just like the skipper, India also missed batter Rohit in South Africa in equal measure and on his comeback, there were no signs of any hamstring niggle as he smashed 10 fours and a six, adding 84 with stand-in opener Ishan Kishan (28).

Rohit Sharma & Co. thrash West Indies by 6 wickets as India register comprehensive win in 1000th ODI

Team India off-spinner Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the forthcoming ODI series against South Africa after testing positive for Covid-19 during the camp in Bengaluru.

Sundar was supposed to travel to Cape Town with the ODI members on Wednesday and join the rest of the squad ahead of the ODI series starting January 19. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Jayant Yadav as replacement for Sundar.

The Committee also added fast bowler Navdeep Saini to the ODI squad as a back-up for Mohammed Siraj who is still recovering from his hamstring injury that he sustained in the 2nd Test against South Africa in Johannesburg, the BCCI said in a statement on Wednesday.

Former India paceman feels that it is unfair to chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav for not being included in the squad and should be disappointed after the omission.&nbsp;

“I think Kuldeep should be very disappointed, and why shouldn’t he? After the last Test of the last series, he was the No. 1 spinner for India. He hasn’t played a Test since I think. If you're going in with five bowlers, which they've obviously looked at the experience and perhaps thought need a cushion. But why not play another spinner? It gives you that balance in the attack. If the pitch flattens out, and there isn’t much for the quicks, then suddenly it becomes a one-dimensional attack,” Agarkar said on the 'Extraaa Innings' show on Sony Sports Network.

According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, Siraj didn't spend much time in front of 215 and 216 section at the Gabba but a&nbsp;spectator&nbsp;told the publication that the Indian bowler was repeatedly called a "grub" by a section of vocal supporters.&nbsp;

Debutant Washington Sundar, who replaced Ravichandran Ashwin, in the line-up was subjected to the same chant of "grub" from the unruly section.&nbsp;

"The guys behind me have been calling - shouting - both Washington and Siraj grubs," a spectator named Kate&nbsp;was quoted as saying in the report by the Sydney Morning Herald.

"It started targeted at Siraj and it was a chant similar to the SCG one (in which fans sang to the tune of Que Sera, Sera but substituted the lyrics with Que Shiraz, Shiraz).&nbsp;
