Estimates suggest that it dates between 1470 and 1520. It reportedly spent some 500 years buried in the field before it was discovered.

David Hunter, the man who made headlines for killing his terminally ill wife in Cyprus, has been cleared of murder charges. However, on Friday (July 21st), the Cyprus court found Hunter guilty of a lesser charge of manslaughter, which as per his daughter is "the best we could have hoped for in the circumstances." He will now be sentenced on 27 July.

The 75-year-old has repeatedly claimed that his wife had begged him to end her misery.

A mercy killing

74-year-old Janice Hunter, as per Sky News, died of asphyxiation at the couple's retirement home near Paphos in December 2021.

At the time, David admitted to killing her but denied it was a murder. He told the Cyprus court that Janice was suffering from blood cancer and had "begged him" to take her life, relieve her of the pain.

During the trial, while testifying, he reportedly broke down and said he would "never in a million years" have killed Janice unless she didn't ask him to.

"She wasn't just my wife, she was my best friend," he exclaimed.

'Best we could have hoped for'

Lesley Cawthorne, Janice and David's daughter told Sky News she was relieved that her father has been cleared of murder charges.

"It's the best we could have hoped for in the circumstances, and I really hope the judges can extend their compassion and be lenient in their sentencing."

In June 2022, she told BBC that her mother had been "in absolute agony" in her final months.

As per David, his wife had been begging him to relieve her of the pain for weeks.

"For five or six weeks before she died, she was asking me to help her. She was asking me more every day," he said.

"In the last week, she was crying and begging me. Every day she asked me a bit more intensely to do it."

He claimed that he kept hoping she will change her mind but that he finally gave in to her pleas and covered her mouth and nose after she got "hysterical". Following this, he also tried to take his own life.

Despite opposition from the defence, the court had allowed his confession, deeming it lawfully obtained.

Not a pre-planned act

As per BBC, Hunter's lawyer Michael Polak, the verdict meant there was a "very good chance" his client would receive a suspended sentence and be able to return to the UK to live with his daughter.

"This wasn't a pre-planned act," said Polak, adding that his client "acted on the spur of the moment because she (Janice) was in so much pain."

According to the lawyer, judges also accepted Hunter had a "loving" and "dream" relationship with his wife of more than 50 years and "on that morning she asked him to end her life".

A mercy killing 74-year-old Janice Hunter, as per Sky News, died of asphyxiation at the couple's retirement home near Paphos in December 2021. At the time, David admitted to killing her but denied it was a murder. He told the Cyprus court that Janice was suffering from blood cancer and had "begged him" to take her life, relieve her of the pain. "She wasn't just my wife, she was my best friend," he exclaimed. 'Best we could have hoped for' Lesley Cawthorne, Janice and David's daughter told Sky News she was relieved that her father has been cleared of murder charges. "It's the best we could have hoped for in the circumstances, and I really hope the judges can extend their compassion and be lenient in their sentencing." In June 2022, she told BBC that her mother had been "in absolute agony" in her final months. As per David, his wife had been begging him to relieve her of the pain for weeks. "For five or six weeks before she died, she was asking me to help her. She was asking me more every day," he said. Every day she asked me a bit more intensely to do it." He claimed that he kept hoping she will change her mind but that he finally gave in to her pleas and covered her mouth and nose after she got "hysterical". Following this, he also tried to take his own life. Despite opposition from the defence, the court had allowed his confession, deeming it lawfully obtained. Not a pre-planned act As per BBC, Hunter's lawyer Michael Polak, the verdict meant there was a "very good chance" his client would receive a suspended sentence and be able to return to the UK to live with his daughter. "This wasn't a pre-planned act," said Polak, adding that his client "acted on the spur of the moment because she (Janice) was in so much pain." According to the lawyer, judges also accepted Hunter had a "loving" and "dream" relationship with his wife of more than 50 years and "on that morning she asked him to end her life".
Harmanpreet Kaur-led India women thrashed Bangladesh women by 108 runs in the second and penultimate ODI on Wednesday (July 19). Riding on Jemimah Rodrigues' 78-ball 86 and skipper Harman's 52, India posted 228 for 8 after being asked to bat first. In reply, the home side fell flat and only managed a paltry 120 all-out in 35.1 overs due to Jemimah's four-fer and Devika Vaidya's 3 for 30.

It was a must-win game for India after conceding the three-match series opener by 40 runs (DLS method).
To this, Harmanpreet smiled and replied saying, “Harmanpreet Kaur, thank you.” Here is the viral video -

Loyal dog in Puducherry town mirrors Hachiko's devotion after owner's suspected suicide

Age may be "just" a number for the world, but in China, for those over 35, it can become the basis for "discrimination" and rejection from jobs and even hostels.

Recently, taking to Xiaohongshu, a social media platform that has been described as "China's answer to Instagram" a consumer complained about hostels rejecting bookings from those in their late 30s. This has sparked a debate on China's "35-year-old crisis", with some labelling this discrimination towards a particular age demographic. However, others are of the opinion that this is justified. Here's all you need to know.

A dearth of hostels

In a now-viral post, a user complained that many youth hostels in the Chinese capital Beijing are refusing accommodation to customers over 35 years of age. The user alleged that he faced quite a struggle looking for hostels without such restrictions.

Apparently, he was informed of the age restriction over the phone and hostel owners defended this constraint, citing safety concerns.

Also read | An NYU professor thinks Donald Trump will quit presidential race. Here's why

He claims that the hostel owner told him that "it is unsafe for older people to get in and out of bed and is prone to accidents."

In frustration, the user asked netizens, "I am getting close (to 35 years old) but I can still do 50 pushups, run five kilometres, and jump over a two-meter wall. What's the danger?"

Safety, peace and more

Sixth Tone, which does extensive coverage of all things China, reports that a search across major online travel-based platforms reveals that many youth hostels in Beijing now impose an age restriction.

Reportedly, many of them have set the age requirement between 18 and 40 years. Additionally, some have raised this restriction and cater to people till the ages of 45 to 50, but many have drawn the line at 35 years.

And it's not just the capital Beijing. Similar restrictions are in place in other major Chinese cities, including Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, and Guangzhou.

Also read | Court sets free UK woman jailed for illegally obtaining abortion pills, terms it 'sad' case

Responding to a booking request by Sixth Tone posing as a middle-aged guest, one Beijing hotel said that the reason for their 35-year age restriction is precautionary. They claimed that they were trying to avoid conflicts between their young guests and the "old" ones and that the schedules, and living habits of the two broad age groups are different.

Another hostel, which has set the age restriction lower at 30 years, said this was done as a safety measure.

"We only offer bunk beds and don’t host elderly guests in general since we are a youth hostel," said a member of the staff, revealing that in the past, a 50-year-old guest had to be rushed to the hospital for treatment after falling off a bunk bed.

Discrimination or not

On Weibo, the Chinese alternative to Twitter, the age limit has led to a discussion of sorts. While many mocked the practice, calling it discrimination, others say that the practice was normal since most hostels cater to the younger demographic.

One user commented, "Such opportunities should be left for youngsters to experience life."

However, another user was quick to point out that, "After being excluded from applying for jobs at public and private companies, now people above 35 have been abandoned by hostels too."

Talking to local news publication Baidu, the user behind the viral social media post which helped shine the limelight on this issue, says that staying in a youth hostel is not only cheaper but also helps you make friends with people with similar interests.

Fu Jian, a lawyer at Henan-based Zejin Law Firm, says that age restrictions are not illegal, but that "operators should inform customers of such conditions in advance to prevent unnecessary disputes."

China's '35-year-old' crisis

In China, there is apparently a long-standing bias towards those over 35 years of age. As per Sixth Tone, in the nation, this particular demographic faces an increasingly long list of life pressures, this predicament has now come to be known as the "35-year-old" crisis.

Those over 35 years shoulder familial burdens while battling a bleak job market. Reportedly, in China, more and more public and private companies are now setting 35 years as the maximum age for new hires. So, for the older youth, the competition is so much tougher.

A 2022 survey conducted by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions revealed that among individuals aged between 35 and 39, 54 per cent were worried about losing their job — the highest percentage among all age groups surveyed.
Kale, an endangered Kemp's Ridley sea turtle, recently underwent a CT scan at an Alabama hospital in the US as part of his ongoing medical treatment.

Pictures of the doctors visit were shared by the Cook Museum of Natural History, where Kale has been living since 2020. The images which were posted on Facebook are now going viral.

Why did a turtle need a CT scan?

As per Miami Herald report, Kale's journey has been challenging. In 2019, the endangered turtle was accidentally hooked by a recreational fisherman off the coast of Virginia.
Due to complications during the healing process, Kale developed scar tissue and a fistula, a hollow space prone to infections. Consequently, he requires regular veterinarian visits and treatment.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) shared a video of the incident on their official Twitter handle, leading to a heated debate among Twitter users. Andrew Tate claims US VP Kamala Harris 'largely incompetent' and prone to playing the 'race card'

Millennials, the generation of people born between 1981 and 1996, have been blamed for many things, ruining Airbnb, tattoos, mayonnaise, McDonald's and so much more. Don't believe us? Just go on Google and search "millennials ruined", you'll see. Now, a recent survey attempted to find who's the biggest fibber of all the generations. Turns out, millennials take the crown for being the biggest liars in the workplace and on social media.

What the study found: Millennials vs Boomers vs Gen Z

Online casino PlayStar conducted a survey of 1,306 participants, split equally between males and females, to explore their propensity for lying in different settings.

As per a report in New York Post, the results revealed that millennials, or those born between 1981 and 1996, were the worst offenders, with 13 per cent admitting to being dishonest at least once a day.

In contrast, only two per cent of baby boomers, those born between 1946 and 1964, confessed to telling a daily fib.

Even Gen Z did better. Generation Z, the young ones, born between 1997 and 2021 and Generation X, born between 1965 and 1980 displayed similar levels of deception, with only five per cent in each group owning up to daily dishonesty.

What do millennials lie about?

The survey did delve into the specific areas where lies are most prevalent. Nearly one-third of millennials admitted to lying on their resumes this year and the workplace was identified as the hub of deceit. Almost 40 per cent of millennials confessed to lying to their boss in order to avoid embarrassment.

Furthermore, 23 per cent of millennials and 21 per cent of Gen Z individuals admitted to lying on social media to impress others.

What pushes millennials to lie?

The focus on money, image, and fame among millennials might explain their higher propensity for lying, as indicated by a 2012 study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Also read | Despite prioritising sex, millennials are less 'sexually free' than Gen Z, survey finds

However, the survey found that the majority of respondents, 79 per cent, claimed to have never told a lie online.

Nine in ten Gen X respondents or 89 per cent, 86 per cent of baby boomers also reported high levels of honesty on social media.

Is there a gender angle to lying?

Interestingly, yes. As per the New York Post report, the survey uncovered a gender difference in lying behaviour. Men were found to be 10 per cent more likely to lie on social media compared to women.

In general too, more men — 26 per cent —confessed to telling a daily lie compared to the slightly lower number of women — 23 per cent. However, the survey challenged the common misconception that women are better at detecting lies than men.

Overall, the survey highlighted that the majority of people struggle to identify when someone is lying, with 97 per cent of participants performing poorly in lie detection.

However, the survey also revealed that lies are not always malicious, with 58 per cent of respondents admitting to telling untruths only to avoid embarrassment and 42 per cent doing so to protect their privacy. Additionally, a significant portion — 42 per cent — confessed to lying to shield someone from reprimand or punishment. So, all in all, it's not all that bad.

Tattoos are amazing! They are exquisite forms of self-expression and let us create art on our skin, making us unique masterpieces. They can tell stories and hold special meanings. 800 tattoos and counting: Mother of two barred from tattoo shops, pubs, and school due to extreme appearance

In China, a man has been detained by the police for stealing university data to create a website that compared and rated students on their physical appearance and attractiveness. The idea is pretty similar to FaceMash, the website created by Mark Zuckerberg, which in a similar manner allowed users to compare students from his alma mater Harvard.

Who is behind the website?

As per a CNN report, the 25-year-old man has been identified only by his surname Ma. A police statement released on Monday shows that he is reportedly a graduate of Beijing's prestigious Renmin University — the institution from whose database the data was stolen.

The website has now been shut down. However, over the weekend, multiple screenshots were posted on Weibo, a social media network often called China's alternative to Twitter.

Users claimed that Ma stole the student's public information from the university database when he was studying there.

The website and how it worked

As per user posts, the website was in operation since 2020. It allegedly rated the physical appearance of both graduate and undergraduate students.

Screenshots of the website as per CNN showed profiles of students that along with their names and student IDs listed their dates and place of birth alongside pictures and assigned scores.

A staff member of Renmin University told state-run China News Weekly that the stolen data of students spanned several years. It is reportedly from between the years 2014 and 2020.

Screenshots of the website were first posted on Renmin University's student discussion post and since then have gone viral on Weibo, attracting hundreds of millions of views.

What does Renmin University have to say?

As per CNN, in a statement, the University which is located in Beijing's Haidian district on Sunday said that it is in contact with the police and is cooperating with the investigation.

Also read | Discovery of cocaine in White House library prompts secret service investigation Users claimed that Ma stole the student's public information from the university database when he was studying there. The website and how it worked As per user posts, the website was in operation since 2020.
The clip, shared on the microblogging site Twitter, purportedly showed a man, allegedly a member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Pravesh Shukla, urinating on a worker from the indigenous community.

Godfather of AI calls for action 'before AI is smarter than us', warns looming takeover isn't science fiction

Getting older is something many people dread, counting each year, trying to look and feel younger. If you live in South Korea, as of Wednesday, you would have become a year or two younger. Starting June 28th, in the nation, replacing the country's traditional method, new laws have implemented the international method of counting age.

How does this make South Koreans younger?

South Korea 'turns back the clock' on citizens' ages, people become year or two younger. Here's how

When we use food delivery applications, we expect our order to get delivered within a certain period of time. In case it gets delayed, some of us become fussy and hangry, but we hardly think about the person who is delivering the food.

The food delivery agents often rush after taking the order from the restaurants as they are liable to bring the food in its actual state. As consumers, we would also not appreciate it if we get cold food and warm drinks.

But what about the so-called work culture of those agents, who often don't get enough time to eat their meals on time? A similar thing was seen in a viral and heartbreaking video shared by an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Awanish Sharan.

In the video, it appears as if the delivery executive was taking a quick break to eat food directly from the plastic packet on the roadside. All details are not available so far, more information is awaited.

Netizens are in anguish after seeing food delivery agent eating from plastic packet on roadside

What would you do if you could modify your body to add mechanical parts? If you could just go up to a shop and ask for cyborg arms or legs? What would the society look like? This scenario does seem like something straight out of a science fiction comic. However, it is the reality that has been made possible by a Japan-based researcher and his team.

Masahiko Inami and his team have come up with robotic arms that can be worn by a user and can move in tune with a human.

Jizai Arms

The technology named "Jizai Arms" takes inspiration from 'The Arm', a quasi-horror traditional Japanese story by novelist Yasunari Kawabata. The short story revolves around an ageing man who becomes obsessed with a beautiful young woman and borrows one of her arms for the night.

As per Reuters, Inami and his team. are further developing a series of technologies, all rooted in the idea of "jizai". The Japanese term, as per Inami, roughly relates to autonomy and an individual's freedom to do as he pleases.

Why develop cyborg arms?

As per the researcher, the aim behind developing 'Jizai arms' is to foster a relationship similar to music and instrument between machine and man.

"Lying somewhere between a human and a tool, like how a musical instrument can become as if a part of your body," is how the University of Tokyo researcher describes it.

He says that rather than replace humans, the technology aims to "support us" and "unlock creativity".

"This is absolutely not a rival to human beings, but rather something that helps us do as we please, like a bicycle or e-bike. It supports us and can unlock creativity," said Inami.

What can the robot arms do?

If you're wondering how it would feel to wear the cyborg arms and whether it'll feel bulky or weighed down. Inami has revealed that many wearers actually grow attached to the arms.

While testing the technology, researchers discovered that "Taking them off after using them for a while feels a little sad. That's where they're a little different to other tools."

In a promotional video of the "Jizai Arms" ballet dancers can be seen performing a dance routine with the robotic arms strapped to their backs and torso. The humans and the machine can be seen moving in concert. The aesthetic dance routine ends with the two dancers embracing as their cyborg arms also envelop each other.

Francesca Gino, a prominent Harvard Business School (HBS) professor known for her studies on honesty, has been accused of data fraud. Allegations against Gino surfaced in recent weeks, with claims that she falsified results in several behavioural science studies.

How did her lies come to light?

As per the Guardian, Harvard informed Max Bazerman, an HBS professor and co-author of a 2012 paper with Gino, that it believed one of the studies overseen by Gino had falsified results.

The paper in question was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and later retracted. It focused on an experiment involving participants filling out tax and insurance paperwork.

It claimed that participants who signed truthfulness declarations at the top of the page were more honest than those who signed at the bottom.

"Many written forms required by businesses and governments rely on honest reporting. Proof of honest intent is typically provided through signature at the end of, eg, tax returns or insurance policy forms. Still, people sometimes cheat to advance their financial self-interests at great costs to society. We test an easy-to-implement method to discourage dishonesty: signing at the beginning rather than at the end of a self-report, thereby reversing the order of the current practice," said the study's abstract.

According to a report in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Bazerman, Harvard, provided "compelling evidence" of data falsification, including the findings that someone accessed a database and added and altered data.

More proof?

In response to the allegations, a blog called DataColoda, run by three behavioural science academics, published a series of posts detailing extensive evidence of alleged fraud in four academic papers co-authored by Gino.

The blog authors shared their concerns with Harvard Business School in 2021 and believe that many more papers authored by Gino may contain fake data.

"We discovered evidence of fraud in papers spanning over a decade, including papers published quite recently (in 2020)," wrote blog authors, ESADE Business School's Uri Simonsohn, University of California, Berkeley’s Leif Nelson, and University of Pennsylvania’s Joseph Simmons.

They said, "In the fall of 2021, we shared our concerns with Harvard Business School. Specifically, we wrote a report about four studies for which we had accumulated the strongest evidence of fraud. We believe that many more Gino-authored papers contain fake data. Perhaps dozens." Francesca Gino's HBS profile indicates that she is currently on administrative leave.

Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to push the boundaries of what was once thought impossible. Its remarkable prediction capabilities have captured widespread attention. From predicting stock market trends to diagnosing diseases, the technology has demonstrated an uncanny ability to analyse vast amounts of data and make accurate forecasts.

Now, new research conducted by a team of researchers from Denmark and Sweden suggests that artificial intelligence may be able to predict a person's political views based on their appearance, posing potential privacy concerns.

Study findings

The study found that the AI model accurately predicted the political affiliations of people in around 61 per cent of cases.

As per the research published in the journal Nature, variations in facial expressions were linked to political views. The model concluded that, due to their smiles, "both male and female right-wing composites appeared happier than their left-wing counterparts", while liberal candidates displayed more neutral expressions.

Women who exhibited a facial expression of contempt — neutral eyes and one corner of the lips lifted — were associated with more liberal politics by the model.

The researchers also observed a correlation between a candidate's level of attractiveness and their political ideology.

As per Business Insider, women deemed attractive by their beauty scores were predicted to have conservative views, although there was no similar correlation found between men's attractiveness and right-wing leanings.

"Politicians on the right have been found to be more attractive than those on the left," states the study.

What data set was used?

The study aimed to demonstrate the privacy threat resulting from the combination of deep learning techniques and easily accessible photographs. For this purpose, the researchers used a dataset of 3,233 images of Danish political candidates and employed facial recognition and predictive analytics to assess facial expressions and attractiveness scores.

How is this ability a threat?

The findings raise concerns about how AI can perpetuate stereotypes and biases. AI models trained on preconceived notions of beauty standards and gender can reinforce existing stereotypes, potentially leading to biased outcomes in various domains, including hiring decisions.

"Facial photographs are commonly available to potential employers, and those involved in hiring decisions self-declare a willingness to discriminate based on ideology. Members of the public may thus be aided by recognising what elements of their photographs could affect their chances of employment," write the researchers. The study's results also shed light on the implications of advanced technologies, such as AI, in reinforcing perceptions about specific demographics.

The study's results also shed light on the implications of advanced technologies, such as AI, in reinforcing perceptions about specific demographics.
