The United Kingdom is set to unveil a new sculpture that, as per reports, will be the first of its kind. The sculpture is designed to celebrate women who wear hijabs and is called ‘Strength of the Hijab’ and is designed by Luke Perry, an English artist known for his monumental sculptures.

Perry is known for his sculptures that celebrate under-represented peoples and their heritage.

Strength of Hijab

The sculpture will be installed in Britain's second-largest city, Birmingham. To be exact, it will be placed in the Smethwick area of the West Midlands in October.

As per Middle East Monitor, the sculpture was commissioned by a local charity, Legacy West Midlands, and is five metres tall (around 16ft) and weighs about a tonne.

Talking to the press, Perry said: "The Strength of the Hijab is a piece which represents women who wear hijabs of the Islamic faith, and it's really there because it's such an underrepresented part of our community, but such an important one."

The 'Black British History is British History' sculpture was designed by Perry and Canaan Brown, and was installed in Winson Green in May. However, shortly after it was installed, the sculpture was defaced.

As per BBC, Perry has acknowledged that the upcoming sculpture could also be controversial.

US: Teen deliberately hits and kills retired police chief on bicycle, video goes viral

Vacations can be exciting and stressful at the same time. The experience of having some time off from work, to just relax and enjoy yourself is made stressful by the arrangements — the stay, the food and what you'll wear in particular.

Anywhere you're travelling to hotels, bed and breakfasts, motels take care of the first two things, but the third thing for many of us remains a bother. To make it easier and also help the planet, Japan Airlines has introduced a year-long pilot of a service that provides its passengers the ease of booking a selection of clothes. Here's how it works.

No stress to shop or pack

For passengers travelling by Japan's flagship carrier, their vacations can now include the option to rent a selection of clothes. As per a BBC report, they can choose various options, including clothing type, season, style, and pickup and return dates.

Users will receive their selected clothes at their hotel upon arrival. This service will only cost them about $34 to $48 for the rental period.

The service, called 'Any Wear, Anywhere,' started in July of this year and will run till August 2024.

Miho Moriya, who works for Sumitomo, the Japanese company handling reservations, deliveries, and laundering, came up with the idea. She says that what inspired her to come with this was her own dread about luggage.

"I love travelling and I've been to many foreign countries, but I've always dreaded dragging around luggage or doing laundry abroad," she said.

Moriya says it took "many tries" to find an airline that would support her idea, and once it got approved, the implementation was pushed back due to the pandemic. Over time, she hopes to expand this service to other airlines within the OneWorld Alliance and eventually worldwide, contributing to sustainable travel practices.

How would it help the planet?

To begin with, it should help cut down on holiday shopping. Many people tend to shop, especially for their vacations. These clothes often end up sitting in their wardrobes once the holiday is over.

Clothes under the Any wear, Anywhere service are either pre-owned or sourced from company overstock. Furthermore, they will be cleaned and reused, which helps make the service sustainable.

Additionally, with travellers leaving their luggage at home, the aircraft will be lighter and thus help save on fuel and emissions.

This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions by lowering the weight carried on JAL's aeroplanes. It is estimated that saving about 22 pounds (10 kg) in luggage equates to approximately 16.5 pounds (7.5 kg) saved in emissions.
As per CNN, reducing weight is a proven way to save fuel and carbon emissions. Previously, Qantas airlines redesigned its tableware for first and business class to be about 11 per cent lighter. This move, as per the company, helped it start saving 1.1 million pounds (535 metric tonnes) of fuel per year.

In a rather unconventional approach to combat drink-driving, Japanese police are now encouraging individuals to consume alcohol.

After consuming alcohol, drivers are made to navigate a driving course and see for themselves how well they can handle driving.

The campaign was launched after a tragic incident in August 2006, where a drunk driver claimed the lives of three children on a local bridge. This latest edition of the campaign took place at the Chikushino Automobile School in Chikushino City on August 22 and had 10 participants, including a 77-year-old.

How it went

Drivers were first evaluated on their reflexes and driving skills while sober. They were then provided enough alcohol to exceed the legal limit and given a driving course to complete.

Talking to CNN, a police spokesperson revealed that each participant had a driving instructor with them throughout the exercise, even riding with them in their respective vehicles.

Conducted within the confines of the driving school premises, the "hands-on event" allowed "drivers to experience for themselves the difference between driving before and after drinking and to get a sense of how dangerous drink-driving can be," said the spokesperson.

The results

Many participants, as per the spokesperson, acknowledged that the experience highlighted how they had been "overconfident" about their ability to drive under the influence of alcohol. They also realised that they made more errors than they thought they would. A few participants also noticed that their ability to control the vehicle was affected.

Kabaddi match in UK sparks ‘gang violence’, clips show people running for life amidst gun and sword fight

Acknowledging growing concerns over the exploitation of young 'influencers' on social media platforms, Illinois has enacted the United States's first law to safeguard minors featured in online videos. The law will also ensure that these young influencers are properly compensated.

The legislation, as per a CNN report, was inspired by the advocacy of 16-year-old Shreya Nallamothu from Normal, Illinois.

How it all started

The teenager's concern reportedly began when scrolling through social media during the pandemic. She noticed an increasing number of children featured in family vlogs. These videos made her "realise family vlogging is putting very private and intimate moments on the internet."

This prompted her to write a letter to Democrat Dave Koehler, her state senator, urging him to consider protective legislation for these children.

Also read | Ukraine's new military recruitment campaign calls on citizens to 'overcome their fears'

"The fact that these kids are either too young to grasp that or weren’t given the chance to grasp that is really sad," says Nallamothu.

The law

Influenced by her letter, last week, Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker signed into law an amendment to the state's Child Labor Law.

Among other things, the new law allows teenagers over the age of 18 to sue their parents if they were featured in monetised social media videos and not adequately compensated. These rights mirror the rights held by child actors.

The new law draws inspiration from the 1936 "Jackie Coogan's Law," which was designed to prevent parents from exploiting child actors' earnings.

Acknowledging growing concerns over the exploitation of young 'influencers' on social media platforms, Illinois has enacted the United States's first law to safeguard minors featured in online videos.

How it all started The teenager's concern reportedly began when scrolling through social media during the pandemic. She noticed an increasing number of children featured in family vlogs. These videos made her "realise family vlogging is putting very private and intimate moments on the internet." This prompted her to write a letter to Democrat Dave Koehler, her state senator, urging him to consider protective legislation for these children. Also read | Ukraine's new military recruitment campaign calls on citizens to 'overcome their fears' "The fact that these kids are either too young to grasp that or weren’t given the chance to grasp that is really sad," says Nallamothu. The law Influenced by her letter, last week, Illinois Governor J. Starting July 1, 2024, parents in Illinois will be obligated to allocate 50 per cent of earnings from a video's content into a blocked trust fund for the child 'influencer'.
America is in the grip of a new trend of sorts, where a rising number of people are now living alone. Census data shows that in the nation, there are nearly 38 million adults who are living by themselves, and nearly half of these are older Americans.

Experts predict that the numbers are set to rise in coming years. Here's all you need to know about this trend and a phenomenon called grey divorces that is fuelling it.

Old and alone?

As per census data, nearly 16 million people aged 65 and older were living solo in 2022. This is three times the number of older Americans living alone in the 1960s.

CBS News reports that there are many reasons behind this shift in the society — including the economic gains made by women after entering the workforce and the changing attitudes towards marriage.

Also read | Explainer | Why is toxic fan behaviour becoming the new norm at concerts?

While researching on single households, researchers stumbled upon something called 'grey divorces'.

What are grey divorces?

The term 'grey divorce' was popularised about a decade ago by Susan L. Brown, co-director of the National Center for Family & Marriage Research at Bowling Green State University. It refers to the divorce of people over the age of 50, sometimes after decades of marriage.

"Well over a third of people who are getting divorced now are over the age of 50," says Brown.

"We just can't ignore that group anymore."

Researchers found that between 1990 and 2010, in the US, divorce rates for people over the ages of 50 have doubled. The rise has continued over the years and is still going strong.

Some recent example of grey divorces that made the headlines are Bill and Melinda Gates, and more recently Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, who just this week announced separation after 27 years of marriage.

Divorce trends

Grey divorces are on a rise, both among celebrities and the general public, reports CBS. As per Brown, while divorce rates overall are declining, "older adults are really bucking the trend," this is especially true for those over 65 years of age.

"This means more and more people are going to be ageing, probably, alone, and outside of marriage, certainly," she says.

Susan Myres, a family law specialist based in Houston, says that while it may sound illogical to end a marriage this late in life, there are actually plenty of reasons behind this.

"We just can't ignore that group anymore." Also read | Explained | Spacecraft Mission Operations, the science that's steering Chandrayaan-3 to the Moon Researchers found that between 1990 and 2010, in the US, divorce rates for people over the ages of 50 have doubled. Divorce trends Grey divorces are on a rise, both among celebrities and the general public, reports CBS. Excruciating wasp sting leaves Tarantula paralysed for more than a month; video leaves viewers astonished

You must've seen videos of certain types of whales that hunt by merely swimming with their mouths open. Their prey just seems to swim right into their cavernous mouths and into their bellies. This behaviour is called filter-feeding. Using this, species like blue whales and baleen whales sift immense quantities of tiny prey from the ocean.

While fascinating, whales are far from the first species to use this hunting method. Fossils unearthed in China's Hubei Province show that a curious marine reptile that roamed the waters around 250 million years ago had hunting habits similar to the modern gentle giants of the sea — whales.

Blast from the past

Scientists estimate that the ancient reptile species existed in the Triassic Period, around 248 million years ago. They suggest that the marine reptile species called Hupehsuchus nanchangensis was lost to us during Earth's worst mass extinction.

While the reptile had a feeding style similar to the modern whale, Hupehsuchus was far more modest, at only about three feet (one metre) long.

Fossils indicate that the reptile had a long, narrow snout, a toothless mouth. It used its front and back limbs as paddles for steering, and its broad tail for forward propulsion.

Hupehsuchus nanchangensis' snout was made up of long, loose bones, with the lower jaw connected to the rest of the skull loosely. This, as per the scientists, allowed it to open its mouth wide to take in large amounts of water that contained small prey like zooplanktons.

How similar were these reptiles to whales?

Not very, there's a very obvious, enormous size difference. Furthermore, while the feeding method is similar, scientists speculate that there might be key differences.

A dramatic incident occurred in Alaska as a two-storey house succumbed to the Mendenhall River's force after unprecedented glacial flooding in the city. A video capturing the moment of destruction shows the house being swept away by the raging river. According to reports from Sky News, the floodwaters caused significant damage to at least two buildings and eroded riverbanks over the weekend. However, by Monday (August 7), the water levels started receding. No injuries or fatalities were reported during this natural disaster. A viral video has been released which shows NCC cadets being brutally beaten by a senior cadet. Who is the senior cadet? Who appointed the menace? Molly Gambhir reports.

Gravitas: Viral video shows NCC cadets being brutally bashed

Nature is brutal. A gruesome, rare video captured recently is now going viral on the Internet. In it, a killer whale can be seen "slurping" the liver out of a live shark.

Gruesome scene

The gruesome video on YouTube shows the moment an orca tears into the stomach of a massive 30-foot (nine metres) long whale shark before removing its liver.

In the video, other nearby orcas can be heard clicking excitedly in a frenzy as their fellow killer whale swims away from the now dead shark that sinks lifelessly to the depths of the ocean.

A matter of seconds

Talking to Live Science, James Moskito, CEO of the California-based ocean tour operator Ocean Safaris, who captured the video during an expedition to the Gulf of California, said: "The killer whales start coming in and next I know they're biting the bottom of it (the victim shark)".

"It's literally over in a matter of seconds," remarks Moskito, adding, "They came in, they bit the bottom of the whale shark. Looks like they slurped in the liver and then the whale shark just fell and descended down, with no movement — I'm assuming it was dead."

The video was captured back in April. You can watch it here — viewer discretion is advised:

Why is the video rare?

While, earlier, scientists have seen instances of orcas attacking juvenile whale sharks — there's also filmed evidence — this footage, as per Live Science, may be the first known video of killer whales attacking an adult whale shark.

A viral video of a Somalian athlete running embarrassingly slow has created a massive controversy. Somalia claims that the woman is not even a sportsperson nor a runner. Who selected the so-called runner? Molly Gambhir reports

Gravitas: Viral video of a Somalian runner creates controversy

In a patriarchal society, a woman's worth has long been attached to her vagina and its "purity". This obsession has, for years, given way to harmful methods to maintain the so-called purity.

The latest fad in this problematic trend are 'yoni pearls' and as per a report by the Guardian, social media giants Meta, YouTube, and Google are profiting from posts promoting these useless and harmful 'health products' to women in Kenya.

Detox or toxic?

As per research by media collective Fambua, big tech firms are amplifying content promising unproven cures for infertility and herbs that can supposedly fight off cancer.

Fambua found Facebook pages selling these yoni pearls that as per them can "cleanse" the uterus and protect women from cervical cancer.

Also read | Third drug trafficking convict executed in Singapore in less than a week

These yoni pearls are nothing but mesh wrapped herbs that are to be inserted via the vagina and which, as per claims, "detoxes past lovers from the womb space to free yourself and bring in more aligned lover or lovers."

Bogus cures like steaming the vagina — by sitting over a bowl of boiling water is also being promoted as a cure for endometriosis.

Big tech profiteering off hoaxes

As per the media collective's report, "Facebook’s own algorithms are often amplifying this content, and are letting ads for detox remedies target Kenyan users."

It further points out that all these so-called remedies and the supposed health benefits are not backed by any scientific evidence.

"Google and YouTube are also part of this harmful system, profiting off ads for vaginal detox products despite evident health risks," claims the report.

'Asleep at the wheel'

"What is most alarming is how freely these adverts are available. People are not just able to sell things that are harmful, but to do so publicly and even pay for these adverts to go viral. There's an audacious impunity about it," says research lead Wanjiru Nguhi.

"Scam products are being delivered into the Kenyan marketplace while big tech is asleep at the wheel," remarks Kristina Wilfore, co-founder of ShePersisted, an initiative to address gendered disinformation.

Also read | Third drug trafficking convict executed in Singapore in less than a week These yoni pearls are nothing but mesh wrapped herbs that are to be inserted via the vagina and which, as per claims, "detoxes past lovers from the womb space to free yourself and bring in more aligned lover or lovers." Bogus cures like steaming the vagina — by sitting over a bowl of boiling water is also being promoted as a cure for endometriosis. Big tech profiteering off hoaxes As per the media collective's report, "Facebook’s own algorithms are often amplifying this content, and are letting ads for detox remedies target Kenyan users." It further points out that all these so-called remedies and the supposed health benefits are not backed by any scientific evidence. 'Asleep at the wheel' "What is most alarming is how freely these adverts are available.
A few days back, on Monday (July 31), a Somalian athlete made heads turn for her dismal showing during a women's 100-metre race at the World University Games in Chengdu, China. Somali runner's HORRENDOUS performance at World University Games goes viral - Watch

The world's oldest man, Jose Paulino Gomes, has died just one week shy of his 128th birthday.

A resident of Brazil, Gomes as per local media reports, died just seven days before his birthday at his home in Corrego del Cafe in Pedra Bonita, Minas Gerais state, on Friday.

Three pandemics, discovery of X-ray and more

As per Mirror UK, the centenarian must have lived through not just one, but three pandemics, the two world wars and was born even before the death of British Queen Victoria.

His birth certificate for the year 1917 shows that he was born on 4th August 1895, which means he was born before the first-ever high school proms (1920s) and the discovery of X-rays (November 1985).

Willyan Jose Rodrigues de Souza, a legal adviser to a registry office in nearby Pedra Bonita, as quoted by Daily Mail, said, "According to the record, he got married at 22 years old. It is presumed that he was indeed born before 1900. Men rarely got married at 17."

If the records are true, Jose would have been the oldest known person in the world.

According to his family, the 127-year-old died from multiple organ failure, likely due to his advanced age.

What was the secret of his ripe old age?

Speaking to local media, his granddaughter Eliane Ferreira said that Gomes, who had seven children, 25 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren, "was very simple, very humble. His uniqueness was that he didn't like anything industrialised, only things from the countryside, natural."

Previously having worked as an animal tamer, the 127-year-old "raised chickens, pigs... his food was all from here, had to be grown or raised here. And he always liked to have a little drink," she added.

World's "new" oldest person

According to the Guinness World Records, the holder of the record is 115-year-old Maria Branyas Morera from Spain.

Three pandemics, discovery of X-ray and more As per Mirror UK, the centenarian must have lived through not just one, but three pandemics, the two world wars and was born even before the death of British Queen Victoria. His birth certificate for the year 1917 shows that he was born on 4th August 1895, which means he was born before the first-ever high school proms (1920s) and the discovery of X-rays (November 1985). It is presumed that he was indeed born before 1900. Men rarely got married at 17." If the records are true, Jose would have been the oldest known person in the world. His uniqueness was that he didn't like anything industrialised, only things from the countryside, natural." Also read | 'Racy' Chinese restaurant closed after videos show waiters feeding women 'mouth-to-mouth' Previously having worked as an animal tamer, the 127-year-old "raised chickens, pigs... his food was all from here, had to be grown or raised here. And he always liked to have a little drink," she added. World's "new" oldest person According to the Guinness World Records, the holder of the record is 115-year-old Maria Branyas Morera from Spain. Gomes's age is an estimate based on his marriage certificate. As per his granddaughter, "Here in the countryside, people are usually registered when they are older." "There are several cases with incorrect documentation. But his documentation showed he was younger than he actually was," she added. 'He's just Ken': Malala Yousafzai jumps on the Barbie bandwagon

A zoo located in eastern China has denied allegations that some of its bears might actually be humans dressed in bear costumes. The controversy arose after a video of a bear standing on its hind legs surfaced online, leading to speculations about the authenticity of the animal.

The zookeepers at Hangzhou Zoo released a statement on behalf of Angela, a Malaysian sun bear.

“When it comes to bears, the first thing that comes to mind is a huge figure and amazing power … But not all bears are behemoths and danger personified. We Malayan bears are petite, the smallest bear in the world," the zoo statement read.

"Some people think I stand like a person," the zoo said in the post adding, "It seems you don't understand me very well."

Bear video circulates online

The video depicting a sun bear standing on its hind legs quickly gained traction on social media. Observers pointed out that the bear's slender legs and fur folds looked like it might be a human impersonating a bear.

Zoo refutes human bear allegations

To address the growing scepticism, a spokesperson for the zoo recorded an audio message on WeChat, confirming that the animal in the video was indeed a real sun bear.

The spokesperson asserted that any suggestion of deception at their state-run facility was baseless. Additionally, he highlighted that given the scorching 40°C (104°F) summer temperature, a person dressed in a bear suit would not be able to endure for more than a few minutes before collapsing.

Scheduled journo visits to dispel doubts

"Some people think I stand like a person," the zoo said in the post adding, "It seems you don't understand me very well." Bear video circulates online The video depicting a sun bear standing on its hind legs quickly gained traction on social media. Observers pointed out that the bear's slender legs and fur folds looked like it might be a human impersonating a bear. Zoo refutes human bear allegations To address the growing scepticism, a spokesperson for the zoo recorded an audio message on WeChat, confirming that the animal in the video was indeed a real sun bear. Also Read | Bhutan's roaring success in Tiger conservation grows spotlight with latest numbers The spokesperson asserted that any suggestion of deception at their state-run facility was baseless. Additionally, he highlighted that given the scorching 40°C (104°F) summer temperature, a person dressed in a bear suit would not be able to endure for more than a few minutes before collapsing. Scheduled journo visits to dispel doubts In an effort to dispel the rumours and provide evidence of the bear's authenticity, the zoo organised visits for reporters on the following day, allowing them to observe the bears up close.
