Karan Johar's 2012 film Student Of The Year may not have received critical acclaim, but the film will always be remembered for launching the careers of Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan, and Alia Bhatt. Sidharth and Varun shared the couch in the recent episode of Koffee With Karan where host Karan Johar revealed that the two had tried to convince him to not cast Alia Bhatt initially.

During a segment in the show, Karan reminded the two actors of how they were against the idea of Alia being cast in the film.

“I still remember with Alia, the first time that she walked in, how both of you sent me messages saying you can’t cast her. One of you said she is too young. I am saying it started like this but when we shot with her, three months post that for a photo shoot, I remember she stood quiet and didn’t look at either of you. Either she was conscious or shy because you all already knew me. She didn’t know me at all. We did the photo shoot, and right after that, I mean, I knew at the first shot," Karan said.

Karan also mentioned that Varun would show him pictures of other actresses that he could cast instead of Alia. Thankfully, he did not listen to Varun and stuck with his decision.

Varun and Sidharth had worked with Karan as assistant directors in My Name Is Khan before they made their acting debut in SOTY.
Alia and Varun worked together in movies like Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya and Kalank after SOTY. Sidharth and Alia worked in Dharma's Kapoor & Sons and even dated in real life for a while. She is now married to Ranbir Kapoor and Sid to Kiara Advani.

Israeli Embassy criticises Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor's Bawaal for trivialising holocaust

Never in my wildest imagination did I think that a Bollywood film featuring two commercial stars like Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor would give me history lessons on World War II and Hitler. Don't get me wrong, I do not think that the actors are not capable of being associated with something as serious as World War, they have proved their mettle in several films before and are stellar performers if given the right script, but in Nitesh Tiwari's latest film Bawaal, the two actors meander through a convoluted plot which is a coming of age saga with World War II as the backdrop.

Now, the trailer of Bawaal had left me, like many others, very confused. I simply could not fathom how the holocaust and present-day Lucknow could be connected. But the film does. Writer Ashwini Iyer Tiwari's flight to fantasy connects Ajay, a local star of Lucknow, to one of the worst chapters of history. The film has Dhawan playing Ajay or Ajju, a middle school history teacher, who is more concerned about his image in the city of Lucknow than his students and the subject he teaches. Ajju has created an image of himself as an extraordinary person with multiple talents across the city. His stories are narrated in Lucknow almost like folklore. But Ajju in reality is a deeply insecure, frustrated man- unhappy with his job, his life, and his marriage to Nisha (Kapoor).

Ajju's lack of enthusiasm and knowledge of history lands him in trouble at school and he is suspended temporarily. The man is more perturbed about the dent the suspension would bring to the image that he has so carefully created for himself all these years.

In order to keep his image intact, he decides to take a trip to Europe- specifically to cities that have historical importance to the world war. His genius idea involves him and Nisha travelling to European cities like Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam and Auschwitz and from there sending his students, lessons of World War II- a chapter that he could not cover due to his suspension. While his admirers hail the decision his own family is sceptical about his intentions. As the two land in Paris- their first stop in the Europe trip- self-discovery happens first for Nisha and eventually for Ajju as they both rediscover life, the struggles that humanity faced during the World War, and the futility of conflict and way in general.

Bollywood has over the years made several coming-of-age films. In that sense, Bawaal doesn't serve us anything new. However, it is how the writer connects World War to a man's self-realization that makes this film unique. And while on paper it may have appeared to be a great idea (and somewhat far-fetched in my opinion), it somehow doesn't reflect that smartly on screen. Nitesh Tiwari, in the past, has given us two terrific films like Dangal and Chhichhore and so the expectation from Bawaal is high. However, the film ends up being a middling affair. It neither provokes any emotions in scenes where the director ably depicts some horrific episodes of World War II, nor does it create an impact on Ajju's progression in the story. The backdrop of the war as a tool of self-discovery seems rather misplaced, especially when the two plots are literally from different eras.
The makers try to take up too many issues in one film, thereby making it a convoluted storyline. There is Ajju and Nisha's love story, and how they rediscover their feelings for each other during the trip, there is also a portion about the futility of war, then Ajju's journey of becoming content with his life, the importance of appreciating what one has in life instead of what one yearns for- all this is placed in the same story - and the result is not the best. The narrative ever so often switches to black and white to depict the war and then changes back to colour to give a perspective of the leads. It's almost like watching Ranbir Kapoor's journey of coming of age in any of his blockbuster films but with World War II forcibly thrust down our necks and being persistently told that a man-child's journey to becoming an adult is connected to a war that took place over eight decades back.

The actors are credible in their parts. Manoj Pahwa, Janhvi Kapoor, and Varun Dhawan do justice to their part but are often led down by poorly written screenplay. The only portions that were well-written involved Dhawan and a bunch of Gujarati tourists on the same flight to Paris. Their bags get exchanged and the faux pas that ensues is hilarious. Of course, it does generalize the Gujarati community, but still provides the laughs.

Bawaal demands you to indulge the writer and director with their story which seems like a stretch in every aspect. Over the years, there have been several films made on World War II that have not only highlighted the mammoth tragedy that the human race had to face at that time but also beautifully highlighted the lessons that we all need to learn from history. Bawaal, unfortunately, is not that film. It provides a convoluted love story wrapped in lessons of history- that can be bunked. Bawaal is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Never in my wildest imagination did I think that a Bollywood film featuring two commercial stars like Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor would give me history lessons on World War II and Hitler.

Bawaal trailer: Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor's movie is a complicated love story

A teaser for Bawaal was released earlier today. The film is directed by Dangal and Chhichhore helmer Nitesh Tiwari and features Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor in lead roles. Bawaal is said to be a love story, but not much is known about the actual plot. The caption of the teaser says mysteriously, "Love never comes easy, get ready for some Bawaal!" The teaser itself is little help. Set to an Arijit Singh song from the film, it features Dhawan and Kapoor's characters falling in love — there is exchange of smiles and stolen glances — and seemingly falling out of it. In one shot, Kapoor slaps Dhawan. Later, they seemingly say an emotional goodbye. All seems your typical Bollywood romance until the final scene.

It shows the two stars inside what appears to be a gas chamber. They call each other's names in the chamber but cannot seem to get together as the space is packed with humanity. Sure enough, the chamber is locked shut by a guard.

Weird, huh? At least many on Twitter think so. It is not usual to see the depictions of the Nazis and Holocaust in Hindi cinema. Now since the Holocaust was a devastating and tragic event that claimed the lives of millions of innocent people, many are worried whether the makers (Tiwari has penned the script with wife Ashwiny Iyer, Nikhil Mehrotra, Piyush Gupta, and Shreyas Jain) will be sensitive with the depiction of a horrific part of the Holocaust.

Given the limited information at the moment, it is difficult to determine the intentions of the filmmakers in this particular scene. But the aforementioned tagline "Love never comes easy, get ready for some Bawaal!" does not exactly inspire confidence. It suggests that the film may use the backdrop of the Holocaust to explore the complexities of love and relationships. Which would not be... ideal.

Varun Dhawan and Atlee team up for action thriller. Here's when the movie will release

Samantha Ruth Prabhu's hit song Oo Antava from the film Pushpa: The Rise was a smash hit when it first dropped in 2021. The film went on to become a box office success and the song, because of its catchy beats, became a staple in every playlist of every party in India. But the song did not just create an impact in India it seems and has travelled to other countries as well. Recently, Samantha got to hear the hit song at a club in Belgrade, Serbia and even grooved to the beats with others present at the venue.

A video is doing the rounds of the internet which shows Samantha and Varun Dhawan at a club in Belgrade dancing to the hit song. At the beginning of the video, Samantha, dressed in a black crop top and pants and sporting specs and bangs, looks a bit surprised as the song starts playing, while Varun and others cheer on and then seconds later starts dancing to the song with others.

A few steps ahead of her, Varun can be seen grooving with others, saying something to Samantha, likely asking her to dance.

Why are Samantha and Varun in Serbia?

Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Varun Dhawan are working on the Indian version of Citadel which is being helmed by Raj & DK. The original, by the Russo Brothers, was released last month and stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden in the lead.

"The series is going to have high-intense action and it being a spy series there has to be a particular swiftness in the movements and fight sequences, for which the training is currently underway. The shoot will continue till July for the series," a source close to the production informed ANI. The release date of the Indian version of Citadel has not been announced yet.

Their recent meet-up with the president
Citadel premiere: Priyanka Chopra, Richard Madden spotted with Varun Dhawan, Samantha

Varun Dhawan’s stint with supermodel Gigi Hadid at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai, India, went viral for the wrong reasons after he picked her up and planted a kiss on her cheek. It all looked a little uncomfortable as Gigi was seen rushing back to her seat as soon as Varun put her back on her feet. So much so that Varun Dhawan had to post a clarification tweet on how it was “planned” for her to be there on stage. Gigi, too, defended Varun and posted an Instagram story on how the Bollywood actor made her “Bollywood dreams come true”.

The incident happened at the launch of the NMACC in India where celebrities from all over the world came to witness the monumental leap for India with its own version of the MET Gala. But looks like there was some truth to the rumours that what Varun did with Gigi was not all planned and that she didn’t like it as much as he would like to believe.

A Reddit user has now pointed out that the American supermodel has deleted that particular Instagram story hours before it could automatically disappear. An Instagram story stays up for 24 hours before it disappears completely. Seen on a Reddit thread, the netizens feel that Gigi’s story was a part of the “PR cleanup” to save Varun Dhawan’s image and the stakes involved at the launch of NMACC.
Many claimed that Gigi coming on stage could have been planned but what Varun did with the model on stage, looked extremely uncomfortable to all. A Reddit user wrote, "Why do I feel like this is a PR clean up is because 1) Bollywood dreams sounds like a very indian thing to say and it just seemed like a script given script followed sort of thing. 2) who comes and says me picking up a girl, 360 degree rotation and she wanting to run away from me was all preplanned? if its pre-planned her body language should be at least 10 percent like she is into it right? May be the plan was Gigi coming on stage (like Priyanka Chopra and Alia Bhatt) but not the acrobatics and kiss she was subjected to… its also a relief that there wasn't any wardrobe malfunction."

“Varun Dhawan lifting up Gigi Hadid, twirling her and kissing her cheek WITHOUT HER CONSENT is the most embarrassing and pathetic thing. What’s worse is – his PR team and him (who can’t spell basic words) trying to make it seem like it was pre-planned. I knew the entire Gigi story was just damage control/cover up on his or PR request which clearly backfired on her deleting it!,” another wrote.

Varun Dhawan gives clarification after facing backlash for kissing Gigi Hadid, says 'It was planned'

As Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani shared the first images of their wedding, they broke the internet. Fans of the 'Shershaah' star had been waiting for days to catch a glimpse of the two actors in their wedding attire. Several actors wished the new couple as they shared glimpses of their royal wedding at Suryagarh Fort in Jaisalmer on Tuesday early evening.

Among the wishes that flowed in for Sid and Kiara, Karan Johar's wish stood out. The filmmaker is known to be close to the couple and was one of the attendees at the wedding. Johar took to Instagram to share a heartfelt note for the two actors. "I met him a decade and a half ago…. Silent, strong and still so sensitive…. I met her many years after… silent ,strong and so sensitive in equal measure…Then they met each other and i realised in that moment that the these two pillars of strength and dignity can make an irreplaceable bond and create the most magical love story together…. Watching them is a fairy tale that is rooted in tradition and family…
Bhediya movie collection day 1: Varun Dhawan-Starrer opens to low numbers on Friday

Bollywood has truly come a long way. From stereotyping actors from north-east India in caricature roles and calling them 'chinki'(slang for Chinese) to now having them play pivotal characters in films, the transition has been truly heartening. In the second half of Amar Kaushik's latest 'Bhediya', Jobin (Paalin Kabak) has an outburst about how tired he is of the generalisation. 'Poora North East Shaolin Temple hai tumhare liye' (You consider the whole of North East as a Shaolin temple). The moment is poignant as it very accurately calls out the rest of India and its mindset about the north-east.

The character is shown to be ferociously Indian and pro-progress. That's why he agrees to help Bhaskar(Varun Dhawan) a road contractor to build a highway in Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh and convince the locals to allow private contractors to construct the road by cutting down a portion of the forest. The locals resist and the young generation much like Jobin wants to be connected to the rest of the country and not live in isolation anymore.

The means are, of course, illegal and so when one night Bhaskar is bitten by a wolf inside the jungle, Jobin and Bhaskar's cousin Janardan (Abhishek Banerjee) take him to Dr Anika (Kriti Sanon) a vet to avoid questioning from the authorities. Trouble starts when Bhaskar's wound miraculously heals the next day and he starts behaving strangely. The trip falls into further trouble when slowly one by one local contractor start getting killed. While most cases seem to be animal attacks, local word spread that it's the work of a Vishanoo (Warewolf) and suspicions are the trio.

Writer Niren Bhatt weaves an intricate story that merges fantasy and current scenarios beautifully. The west for years has used the concept of the werewolf in their stories and films, but it's a rather new concept for the Indian audience. Of course, it expects a certain suspension of disbelief but the brilliant writing coupled with catchy dialogues helps to drive home relevant points on deforestation, climate change and stereotyping the northeast. The film never gets preachy, in fact, on the contrary, it drives home a point effectively through humour. It uses the werewolf as a metaphor where humans have to bring out their animal instincts to protect the natural resources of the earth before its too late to save the planet.

The film's dialogues are the heart and soul of the film. Massive pop culture references and witty one-liners keep the audience hooked.

Dhawan, clearly out of his comfort zone, delivers a fine performance. Kriti Sanon has limited screen time but holds her own even though her hairpiece looks slightly unnecessary. The film has Abhishek Banerjee delivering a superb performance. Banerjee had by now mastered the art of playing the best friend to the hero so this one seems a cake walk but it's his comic timing that stands out and makes the film truly entertaining.

While the narrative is enjoyable throughout, it does appear slightly stretched especially during the climax which refuses to conclude. I wish the film was shorter by 20 minutes for maximum effect

VFX of the film is very important and it's done very well. The scene where Dhawan's character shapeshifts into a wolf is well executed and ups the excitement.

'Bhediya' wins for its message and for its ability to speak about pertinent issues but in the garb of humour.

Amar Kaushik had made an impressive debut with 'Stree' which talked of the ills of witchcraft, his second film 'Bala' too highlighted the shallow standards of beauty. With 'Bhediya' he asserts that he knows how to make good cinema which is entertaining as well as relevant. Watch out for the interesting cameos towards the end. I never knew that I was so invested in an Amar Kaushik universe but here I am hoping for the maker to make a sequel of two of his films soon. 'Bhediya' releases in theatres this Friday.
