Bolsonaro, an ally of US President Donald Trump, is on trial at the Supreme Court for allegedly orchestrating a coup after failing to win reelection in 2022 against leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

A Brazilian judge on Monday placed former president Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest for breaking a social media ban, escalating a dramatic standoff between the court and the far-right politician accused of plotting a coup. Bolsonaro, an ally of US President Donald Trump, is on trial at the Supreme Court for allegedly orchestrating a coup after failing to win reelection in 2022 against leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Last month, he was ordered to wear an ankle bracelet and barred from using social media after being accused of trying to disrupt the trial with fiery speeches shared online by his sons and allies. Under the ban, third parties are barred from sharing his public remarks. On Sunday, allies of Bolsonaro defied the court order by broadcasting a live call between the former army captain and his son at one of several solidarity rallies held across Brazil. In Monday's ruling, seen by AFP, a furious Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the judiciary would not allow a defendant to "treat it like a fool" because of his "political and economic power." Criticizing Bolsonaro's "repeated failure" to comply with the court's restrictions, he ordered him placed under house arrest at his home in the capital Brasilia. Moraes also barred the country's former leader (2019-2022) from receiving visitors, apart from his lawyers, and from using any mobile phones. The new measures were expected to be met with fury in Washington. Last week, Trump already imposed massive tariffs on Brazil and sanctioned Moraes for what he termed his "witch hunt" against Bolsonaro.

In the open letter signed by 550 people, including former chiefs of Shin Bet and the Mossad spy agency, and shared with media on Monday, the retired officials called on Trump to “steer” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu towards a ceasefire.

Hundreds of retired Israeli security officials, including former heads of intelligence agencies, have urged US President Donald Trump to pressure their own government to end the war in Gaza. “It is our professional judgement that Hamas no longer poses a strategic threat to Israel,” the former officials wrote in an open letter shared with the media on Monday. “At first this war was a just war, a defensive war, but when we achieved all military objectives, this war ceased to be a just war,” said Ami Ayalon, former director of the Shin Bet security service. The war, nearing its 23rd month, “is leading the State of Israel to lose its security and identity,” Ayalon warned in a video released to accompany the letter. Signed by 550 people, including former chiefs of Shin Bet and the Mossad spy agency, the letter called on Trump to “steer” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu towards a ceasefire. Israel launched its military operation in the Gaza Strip in response to the deadly October 7, 2023 attack by Palestinian militant group Hamas. In recent weeks, Israel has come under increasing international pressure to agree to a ceasefire that could get Israeli hostages released from Gaza and UN agencies to distribute humanitarian aid. But some in Israel, including ministers in Netanyahu’s coalition government, are instead pushing for Israeli forces to push on and for Gaza to be occupied in whole or in part. The letter was signed by three former Mossad heads: Tamir Pardo, Efraim Halevy, and Danny Yatom. Other signatories include five former heads of Shin Bet, including Ayalon as well as Nadav Argaman, Yoram Cohen, Yaakov Peri and Carmi Gilon, and three former military chiefs of staff, including former prime minister Ehud Barak, former defence minister Moshe Yaalon and Dan Halutz. The letter argued that the Israeli military “has long accomplished the two objectives that could be achieved by force: dismantling Hamas’s military formations and governance.” “The third, and most important, can only be achieved through a deal: bringing all the hostages home,” it added. “Chasing remaining senior Hamas operatives can be done later,” the letter said. In the letter, the former officials tell Trump that he has credibility with the majority of Israelis and can put pressure on Netanyahu to end the war and return the hostages. After a ceasefire, the signatories argue, Trump could force a regional coalition to support a reformed Palestinian Authority to take charge of Gaza as an alternative to Hamas rule.

<p>Days after the former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev said that the US ultimatum to Russia is a 'call for war', President Donald Trump ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in the "appropriate regions" near Russia. Trump said that it was in response of 'inflammatory statements' by Medvedev. He also warned that such rhetoric can lead to unintended consequences. "I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that," Trump said in a social media post. He added that he ordered the submarines as, "Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances."</p>

<h2>Who is Dmitry Medvedev?</h2><p>The former president of Russia, Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev, who has triggered Trump, now serves as Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation. Medvedev, who was born on September 14, 1965, held the position of President and Prime Minister, is now a trusted ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Once seen as a moderate reformer with pro-Western leanings, Medvedev has in recent years adopted a far more nationalistic stance, particularly since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He studied law at Leningrad State University. In the 1990s, he worked as a legal advisor to then-Mayor Anatoly Sobchak, where he met and began working closely with Vladimir Putin, a relationship that would define his political career.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Medvedev served as the President of Russia from 2008 to 2012, succeeding Vladimir Putin, who became Prime Minister due to term limits. During his presidency, Medvedev portrayed himself as a moderniser. He supported technological innovation, a more open society, and improved relations with the West. He also signed the New START Treaty with the United States and called for reducing Russia’s dependence on oil and gas. Despite this reformist image, most analysts agree that Putin remained the dominant figure in Russian politics, with Medvedev acting as a placeholder president until Putin could return to power. Following Putin’s return to the presidency in 2012, Medvedev became Prime Minister, a position he held until 2020. His tenure was marked by economic challenges, Western sanctions after the annexation of Crimea, and a gradual decline in his influence. In January 2020, Medvedev resigned along with the rest of the cabinet during a government reshuffle. Shortly afterwards, he was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Security Council, a powerful position reporting directly to Putin.</p><h3>Transformation into what critics say ‘hardliner’</h3><p>Since the beginning of the Ukraine war in 2022, Medvedev’s public rhetoric has taken a dramatic turn. He has become one of the most aggressive and vocal supporters of the war, frequently issuing nuclear threats and sharply criticising the West, NATO, and Ukraine. Formerly known for his interest in social media, blogging, and modernisation, Medvedev now uses platforms like Telegram and X to deliver harsh, often inflammatory messages. Medvedev, however, remains a key figure in the Kremlin’s inner circle. As Deputy Chair of the Security Council, he holds significant influence in Russia’s national security and foreign policy apparatus.</p>

<h2>What did he say that triggered Trump?</h2><p>In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he’s still President, to watch his words. He’s entering very dangerous territory!” This comes after Medvedev said that Russia is not Iran or Israel, and mocked Trump's ‘10-day ultimatum’ to Russia for ending the Ukraine war. He added that Trump's ultimatum might actually be “a step towards war.” “Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country,” he wrote on X. In another post on X, Medvedev criticised Trump's action on BRICS, stating that the group is gaining prominence an doing everything right. Earlier this month, after US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, the former Russian president had said that Trump's action only emboldened the Iranian leadership and exposed Israel and America's weaknesses in front of the world.</p>

<p>What seems to have angered Trump the most was Medvedev's stark reminder to US about Russia's devastating nuclear strike capabilities, including its so-called ‘Doomsday’ systems. Medvedev reminded Trump about his favourite film, ‘Walking Dead’, recalling the Soviet era, how dangerous the fabled 'Dead Hand' can be. Dead Hand, also known as the Perimeter, is a Cold War-era semi-automated nuclear retaliation system. It is termed as Russia's ‘Doomsday Device’, it is for a post-apocalyptic scenario. The terrifying purpose of this device is to launch a retaliatory nuclear strike even if the Russian leadership is completely wiped out. The dead hand is designed to detect nuclear strikes through seismic, radiation, and pressure sensors. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/russia-s-dead-hand-medvedev-warning-trump-1754033109520"><strong>READ MORE about it</strong></a></p>

Trump rewriting history? Smithsonian removes reference to his two impeachments from presidency exhibit

<p>Despite US President Donald Trump's newly imposed penalties on top of a 25 per cent tariff for its trade relations with Russia, Indian oil refiners, as per reports, continue to source oil from Russian suppliers, suggest reports. The Indian oil refiners' decision is reportedly based on the price, grade of crude, inventories, logistics, and other economic factors and has nothing to do with the prevailing political atmosphere. Previously, on Friday (Aug 1), speaking on similar lines, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, while speaking about media reports that some Indian oil firms had paused Russian imports, said he was not aware of any such developments. He noted that India's broad approach to energy sourcing requirements depends on "what is available in the market and the prevailing global situation."</p><h2><strong>Why is Russian oil in the headlines, and what does India have to do with it?</strong></h2><p>On Thursday (Jul 31), Trump signed an executive order imposing new tariffs on dozens of its trade partners. This included a 25 per cent tariff rate and a penalty on India. The tariffs come amid growing criticism from Washington over India's continued imports of discounted Russian oil, despite Western sanctions related to the Ukraine war.</p><p>However, as per an ANI report citing sources, despite US' pressure, India continues to source oil from Russian suppliers. As per the report, this is because Moscow is the world's second-largest crude oil producer with an output of around 9.5 mb/d (nearly 10 per cent of global demand). It is also the second-largest exporter, shipping about 4.5 mb/d of crude and 2.3 mb/d of refined products. In March 2022, amid fears of Russian oil getting pushed out of the market, Brent crude prices soared to US $137 per barrel.</p><p>"In this challenging environment, India, as the world’s third-largest energy consumer with 85% crude oil import dependence, strategically adapted its sourcing to secure affordable energy while fully adhering to international norms," said the news agency's unnamed sources. They added that Russian oil has never been sanctioned. Instead, the nation was subjected to a G7/EU price cap mechanism that is designed to limit revenue while making sure global supplies flowed uninterrupted. Calling India's purchases legitimate and in line with international norms, they added that "Had India not absorbed discounted Russian crude combined with OPEC+ production cuts of 5.86 mb/d, global oil prices could have surged well beyond the March 2022 peak of US$137/bbl, intensifying inflationary pressures worldwide".</p><p>This, they said, means that India's energy decisions, while being guided by the nation's interests, also contributed positively to global energy stability and kept oil flowing, prices stable, and markets balanced, while fully respecting international frameworks.</p>

Despite the US' pressure, India continues to source oil from Russian suppliers. As per the report, among other things, this is because Moscow is the world's second-largest crude oil producer and also the second-largest exporter.

He noted that India's broad approach to energy sourcing requirements depends on "what is available in the market and the prevailing global situation." Why is Russian oil in the headlines, and what does India have to do with it? On Thursday (Jul 31), Trump signed an executive order imposing new tariffs on dozens of its trade partners. This included a 25 per cent tariff rate and a penalty on India. The tariffs come amid growing criticism from Washington over India's continued imports of discounted Russian oil, despite Western sanctions related to the Ukraine war. However, as per an ANI report citing sources, despite US' pressure, India continues to source oil from Russian suppliers. As per the report, this is because Moscow is the world's second-largest crude oil producer with an output of around 9.5 mb/d (nearly 10 per cent of global demand). It is also the second-largest exporter, shipping about 4.5 mb/d of crude and 2.3 mb/d of refined products. In March 2022, amid fears of Russian oil getting pushed out of the market, Brent crude prices soared to US $137 per barrel. "In this challenging environment, India, as the world’s third-largest energy consumer with 85% crude oil import dependence, strategically adapted its sourcing to secure affordable energy while fully adhering to international norms," said the news agency's unnamed sources. They added that Russian oil has never been sanctioned. Instead, the nation was subjected to a G7/EU price cap mechanism that is designed to limit revenue while making sure global supplies flowed uninterrupted. Calling India's purchases legitimate and in line with international norms, they added that "Had India not absorbed discounted Russian crude combined with OPEC+ production cuts of 5.86 mb/d, global oil prices could have surged well beyond the March 2022 peak of US$137/bbl, intensifying inflationary pressures worldwide". This, they said, means that India's energy decisions, while being guided by the nation's interests, also contributed positively to global energy stability and kept oil flowing, prices stable, and markets balanced, while fully respecting international frameworks.

Russia's dead hand: What is Medvedev warning Trump about?

<p>The United States on Thursday (July 31) imposed new tariff duties on countries in continuation of US President Donald Trump's Liberation Day tariff. The rates of tariffs on as many as 70 countries were decided on the basis of their negotiations with the US in the period of 90 days that Trump gave earlier this year. While announcing the new rates, the Trump administration included a stricter crackdown on 'trans-shipment'. This means goods found by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to have been rerouted through third countries to evade tariffs will face a punitive 40% duty, alongside other fines and penalties.</p><h2>What is 'transshipment'?</h2>

<p>Transshipment is the process of moving goods or containers from one mode of transport to another, or from one vessel to another, at an intermediate destination before they reach their final port. This is a common practice in international trade and is often necessary when there is no direct shipping route between the origin and the final destination. Key aspects of transshipment include ‘intermediate hub.’ Under this, the transfer of goods takes place at a transshipment hub, which is typically a major port with connections to many different shipping routes. It also includes ‘changing modes’ in which transshipment can involve switching between different modes of transport, such as from a ship to a truck or a train, a process also known as "transloading." A key factor of trans-shipment is ‘cost-effectiveness’. While transshipment can add complexity and time to a journey, it is often a more economical option than a direct shipment, specially for routes with low demand. Though transshipment is a normal and legal part of global logistics, it can also be used illegally to disguise the origin of goods, avoid tariffs, or engage in smuggling.</p><h2>Trump announces new tariffs&nbsp;</h2><p>United States President Donald Trump signed an executive order late on Thursday (July 31) to increase and modify tariffs on its trading partners, in expansion of his ‘Liberation Day tariff’ that he said was imposed to punish countries using unfair trade practices. Citing a national emergency, Trump had declared on April 2 that he would impose reciprocal tariffs on American trading partners. He, however, paused the tariffs for a period of 90 days and gave an opportunity to countries to strike a trade deal with America. While countries like South Korea, Japan, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Indonesia and Vietnam struck a deal within the given period, India, Canada, and Mexico are still in talks for a fair trade deal. The White House said that the imposition of these new rates will come into effect from next Friday and not August 1, as announced earlier. The new tariff structure ranges from 10% to 41% depending on the country and product type.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-announces-new-tariff-rates-for-countries-in-escalation-of-trump-s-trade-war-india-faces-25-full-list-here-1754009429716"><strong>Full list of new tariffs HERE&nbsp;</strong></a></p>

<p>The White House on Thursday (July 31) backed United States President Donald Trump's Nobel Peace Prize demand, reiterating that he has been instrumental in solving several crisis around the world. Addressing a press briefing, the White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt Trump has brokered several peace deals and ceasefires in several conflict zones across the world. Estimating that Trump has delivered at least one peace deal per month in his six month tenure as US president, Leavitt reiterated the call for the Nobel Peace Prize. <p>Detailing about the recent Thailand-Cambodia conflict, Leavitt said, "On the peace front, President Trump helped deliver an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. The two countries were engaged in a deadly conflict that had displaced more than 300,000 people until President Trump stepped in to put an end to it." The ceasefire agreement was announced by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), who mediated talks between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai at his official residence near the capital, Kuala Lumpur. She further added that the US President "spoke directly on the phone with the acting Prime Minister of Thailand and the Prime Minister of Cambodia, to inform both the leaders that unless they brought the conflict to an end, there would be no trade discussions or agreements with the United States. Almost immediately afterwards, a peace was brokered that will save thousands of lives and allowed for trade negotiations with these countries to resume, and they have."</p><h2>List of conflicts ended by Trump as claimed by the White House</h2><p>Leavitt further added, "The President has now ended conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia, Israel and Iran, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo, and Egypt and Ethiopia. This means President Trump has brokered, on average, about one peace deal or ceasefire per month during his six months in office. It is well past time that President Trump was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize." Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for stopping hostilities between India and Pakistan after New Delhi's effective response to Islamabad's aggression following precision strikes on terror infrastructure. However, India refuted the claims made by the US President, reiterating its policy that India and Pakistan bilaterally address any matter related to the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.</p><h2>‘No leader in the world told India to stop its operation’</h2><p>Earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while speaking in the Lok Sabha during the Operation Sindoor discussion, emphasised that no world leader told India to stop its operation. "No leader in the world told India to stop its operation. On the night of 9th May, the Vice President of America tried to talk to me. He tried for an hour, but I was in a meeting with my army, so I could not pick up his call. Later, I called him back. The Vice President of America told me on the phone that Pakistan is going to launch a big attack. My answer was that if Pakistan has this intention, it will cost them a lot. If Pakistan attacks, we will respond by launching a big attack. This was my answer...," PM Modi said.</p>

<p>United States President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday (July 31) to reestablish the Presidential Fitness Test, a Cold War-era practice that former President Barack Obama abandoned in 2012. This executive order will ensure that schools in the US mandate children to run, do situps/pullups, and perform flexibility tests. Trump said it will create "a culture of strength" for America’s youth. The test replaces Obama’s "Let’s Move" program, which focused on personal health goals instead of athletic scores. WWE chief content officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque arrived at the White House for the announcement. You get away for a couple of hours.”</p>

<h2>How this fitness program began?</h2><p>According to a 1955 Sports Illustrated article, when Dr Hans Kraus presented the result of the Kraus-Weber test for muscular fitness, it was revealed that European students performed better than their American counterparts. Then, President Dwight D Eisenhower declared the problem “a serious one”. In 1956 he created the President’s Council on Youth Fitness. The fitness council formalised the Presidential Physical Fitness Award Program under former President Lyndon B. Johnson, who created a system whereby students performing at the top 15 per cent receive an award from the president. The program has been through several shifts over the years, but according to Harvard Health Publishing, five core items have remained: a 1-mile run; pullups or pushups; situps; shuttle run; and the sit-and-reach.</p><h2>Why Obama replaced the fitness test?</h2><p>After the 2012-2013 school year, the Obama administration retired the presidential fitness test, arguing that an annual competition does not inspire healthy lifestyle choices. Obama replaced the test with the Presidential Youth Fitness Program, which “moved away from recognising athletic performance to providing a barometer on students’ health,” according to the program’s website. The shift away from the fitness test also came amid a heightened focus on mental health concerns</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

Trump signs order to revive presidential fitness test in presence of Triple H - What is the program and why Obama discontinued it?

<p>United States President Donald Trump took a jab at former Vice President Kamala Harris after news broke about her upcoming memoir, <i>107 Days</i>, which details her failed 2024 presidential campaign. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday (July 31)—where he also reinstated the Presidential Fitness Test for schoolchildren—Trump responded with sarcasm and criticism when asked about Harris’s book. The memoir, which chronicles the shortest presidential campaign in modern US history, prompted Trump to mock Harris’s abilities as a politician and speaker. His remarks came just hours after Harris publicly announced the book’s release date and shared a promotional video on social media.</p><h2>“I Would Love to Buy, No” — Trump Responds</h2><p>Speaking at a press conference held on Thursday—where he also reinstated the Presidential Fitness Test for schoolchildren—Trump didn’t hold back his criticism of Harris. “I would love to buy, no,” he remarked mockingly when the topic of her memoir came up. Continuing in the same tone, Trump questioned Harris’s capabilities, both as a speaker and a politician. “She can't speak. She can't talk. She can't do an interview. I wouldn't call her a skilled politician. Would you? She wasn't a skilled person,” he said. “You know, you have skilled politicians, and you have some that aren't. You know what happened? Donald Trump mocked Kamala Harris’ upcoming memoir 107 Days, criticising her speaking skills and campaign performance. The book reflects on her short 2024 presidential run after Biden’s exit.

United States President Donald Trump took a jab at former Vice President Kamala Harris after news broke about her upcoming memoir, 107 Days, which details her failed 2024 presidential campaign. His remarks came just hours after Harris publicly announced the book’s release date and shared a promotional video on social media. “I Would Love to Buy, No” — Trump Responds Speaking at a press conference held on Thursday—where he also reinstated the Presidential Fitness Test for schoolchildren—Trump didn’t hold back his criticism of Harris. People said, 'What's wrong with her?' She didn't run a great campaign. I had to beat two. But, where are we? We're in the White House!" he added. Harris’s Memoir Offers a Behind-the-Scenes Look at Her Campaign Earlier that day, Kamala Harris announced the release of her memoir, titled 107 Days, which will be published by Simon & Schuster and hit U.S. shelves on September 23. The book promises an inside account of her brief campaign. “Just over a year ago, I launched my campaign for president of the United States, 107 days -- traveling the country, fighting for our future -- the shortest presidential campaign in modern history,” Harris shared in a social media video. Harris stepped into the Democratic presidential race in 2024 after Joe Biden exited with just over 100 days left before the election. Her candidacy drew attention but ultimately ended in defeat. In her statement, Harris said she wrote the book with “candor and reflection” and aimed to provide a “behind-the-scenes account” of her experience on the campaign trail. US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he would postpone a planned tariff hike on Mexican products and instead keep duties at existing levels for 90 days. He made the decision after speaking with Claudia Sheinbaum, his Mexican counterpart. "We have agreed to extend, for a 90-day period, the same Deal as we had for the last short period," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. The country currently faces a 25 percent US tariff on goods for not entering under a North American trade pact. Sheinbaum said that Mexico will seek a long-term deal with the United States to avoid tariffs. "We avoided the tariff increase... and secured 90 days to build a long-term agreement through dialogue," Sheinbaum said after speaking with Trump. What did Donald Trump say? Donald Trump said he was getting to know the Mexican President. "I have just concluded a telephone conversation with the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, which was very successful in that, more and more, we are getting to know and understand each other. Can Donald Trump win the Nobel prize- What do the bookmakers predict?

<p>In what may be called a domino effect, many nations, including the United Kingdom and Canada, have announced that they are willing to recognise Palestine, after French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a diplomatic bombshell. The latest in the list of countries is Canada, and that was enough to draw the attention of US President Donald Trump. In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his disappointment and hinted that doors for a trade deal might be closed for Canada after it decides to recognise Palestine. In March, Trump imposed 25 per cent tariffs on Canada's steel and aluminium, weeks later, the same on automobiles. In June, he doubled steel and aluminium duties. Now he is threatening to tax copper at 50 per cent&nbsp;starting August 1. He has also said that if Canadian PM Mark Carney is not able to strike a trade deal with US, then America will impose a 35 per cent tariffs on all goods from Canada.</p>

<h2>Canada, UK, France and Malta to recognise Palestine</h2><p>Canada will officially recognise a Palestinian state at the United Nations in September, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Wednesday, citing recent reform commitments by the Palestinian Authority (PA) and emphasising the need to preserve the possibility of a two-state solution. "Canada has long been committed to a two-state solution, an independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state living side by side with the State of Israel in peace and security,” Carney said during a press conference alongside Foreign Minister Anita Anand.</p>

<p>This came after French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will recognise the state of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September this year. In a letter to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Macron emphasised the urgency of ending the war in Gaza and protecting civilians, describing his decision as a crucial step toward achieving lasting peace in the Middle East. Macron also reaffirmed France’s support for an immediate ceasefire, the release of Israeli hostages, the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, the disarmament of Hamas, and long-term development efforts for a future Palestinian state.</p>

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Consistent with its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the State of Palestine.<br> <br>I will make this solemn announcement before the United Nations General Assembly this coming September.… <a href="https://t.co/VTSVGVH41I">pic.twitter.com/VTSVGVH41I</a></p>&mdash; Emmanuel Macron (@EmmanuelMacron) <a href="https://twitter.com/EmmanuelMacron/status/1948482142356603089?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">July 24, 2025</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<p>Following France's move, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the UK would recognise a Palestinian state in September unless the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the war and humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, and meets several other conditions, including recommitting to a viable peace process. Joining these countries, Malta also announced its decision to recognise Palestine at the UN General Assembly’s meeting on a two-state solution to the conflict on July 29.</p>

<h2>How many countries have recognised Palestine so far?</h2>

<p>On November 15, 1988, PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat declared Palestine an independent state, naming Jerusalem as its capital. In the aftermath, over 80 nations, primarily from the Global South, including regions across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Arab world—extended recognition. Between the late 1980s and early 1990s, nearly 20 additional countries followed suit, with another 12 joining between 2000 and 2010, mostly from Africa and South America. By 2011, all African states except Eritrea and Cameroon had recognized Palestinian statehood.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>A milestone came in 2012 when the UN General Assembly voted 138–9 (with 41 abstentions) to elevate Palestine's status to that of a non-member observer state. Sweden became the first EU member in Western Europe to recognise Palestine in 2014. More recently, on May 22, 2024, Norway, Ireland, and Spain formally recognised Palestine, prompting diplomatic backlash from Israel. Slovenia joined on June 4, while Malta and Belgium are still considering recognition. None of the G7 countries has recognised the state of Palestine. The Holy See, the governing body of the Catholic Church and Vatican City, which holds UN observer status, has also recognised Palestine.</p>

<p>Hours after announcing a 25 per cent tariff on India, United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday (July 30) said that he doesn't care about India's business with Russia and explained the real reason behind his tariff. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that US has done “very little” business with India, with very high tariffs. He also slammed the Indian and Russian economies as “dead”. The US president also came down heavily on Russia as well as former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Trump, who gave an ultimatum to Russia to end the Ukraine war, clarified that he does not want any business deal with Russia. <p>Trump earlier reiterated that the US has “massive trade deficit with India.” While acknowledging India as a “friend,” Trump criticised the country for maintaining excessively high tariffs and what he described as “obnoxious” non-monetary trade barriers, which he claimed have hindered US–India trade for years. He also condemned India’s continued purchase of military equipment and energy from Russia, calling it inappropriate amid ongoing global efforts to halt Russia’s war in Ukraine. In response, India’s government stated it is reviewing the decision and reaffirmed its commitment to negotiating a fair, balanced trade agreement that protects domestic interests.</p>
